Yes, and the ability to communicate directly with people has been used very effectively by Trump campaigners.
Many of the same people were involved in the Brexit campaign: the political data-profiling company Cambridge Analytica gave both campaigns better targeting - not better arguments or policies, just better targeting of voters.
Combine that with Google, Facebook and YouTube prompting users towards more of the same ("people who liked that, went on to watch this"), and a lot of people on are on the receiving end of a very focussed "news" stream.
The greater number of channels for information isn't inevitably leading to people getting a broader view: for many, it's narrowing their view as they get more of what they already agree with.
