responds to photos of friends' selfies with comments like "gorgeous girlie" "l❤️v u loads"

I have several goddaughters dotted around the country and look at photos on their twitter accounts (only chance I get to see them theses days!) and they're all HD brows, cleavages, knicker skimming dresses and babyish talk.

Now I know I might sound like Great Aunt Prudish but DD becomes a teenager next year and I need stories from MN about teenager girls who are NOT like my godaughters.

We moved DD (12) to a different school in September 2016 for Y8. The Instagram culture at her new school is very subdued compared to the Instagram culture at her old school and this is 100% a reflection of the different values of the schools and the families they attract.

BrianCoxWithBellsOn · 21/01/2017 11:13

Just in case anyone thinks my comment about sneering/look down on is serious - it was an attempt at scathing Charlie Brooker-esque social commentary.

Hmm Grin

kissingJustForPractice · 21/01/2017 11:16

I told my daughter that pouting was basically a "sexy" thing and I didn't think it was appropriate for an 11 year old's profile pic. She was horrified and changed it straight away, she hadn't a clue.

MarsBarsAreShrinking · 21/01/2017 11:19

BrianCoxWithBellsOn excellent post! I 100% agree with everything you've said. My daughter is 21 so while she posts lots of photos of her and her friends, boyfriend etc there's none of the silly finger pointing, fishing for compliments ("gorgeous hunni" ""not as gawjus as you" etc)... I think that's pretty recent in the last year or 2 isn't it?

My niece (14) and H's niece (15) do it ALL the time but I just roll my eyes a little and keep scrolling.

They'll look back in 10 years time and cringe no doubt!

DurhamDurham · 21/01/2017 11:20

One of mine briefly did but grew out of it v quickly and is very classic and understated these days. My youngest never has but then she shops in charity shops and wears oversized grandad cardis with tights and her dirty converse, she has always been eccentric Smile

IPityThePontipines · 21/01/2017 11:23

Never such sneering threads about teenage boys and their interests...

Magzmarsh · 21/01/2017 11:26

Oh god body shop dewberry it was boaktastic Hmm

snozzlemaid · 21/01/2017 11:27

My dd15 has never done this. She hates the whole selfie culture and we have a laugh together about how ridiculous they look.

exLtEveDallas · 21/01/2017 11:27

Woah, hold on. The boys on DDs Instagram are doing exactly the same as her and her friends, Mainz chose, tagged chose, duck faces and snap chat filters. Her best male friend is probably one of the worst, the only difference is that he doesn't do the 'I'm not sure' 'look at dat face tho' and get loads of "aww Hun you r HAWT" in return.

It's not a boy girl thing. It's a teen thing.

Sallystyle · 21/01/2017 11:29

I think it is funny. It doesn't matter really does it?

Teens do silly shit. If they aren't taking pout pictures they are likely doing something else which is a bit cringe worthy to adults.

My two teen sons don't pout, they frown and do things with their fingers. It makes me laugh. They also do the 'Mains owns' stuff. I love reading their FB pages.

Thankfully I don't look down on teenagers who go through these stages. I just remember the things I used to do myself and would probably have done if I had FB at that age.

SparklyFuckingBusinessFairy · 21/01/2017 11:30

Oh god, I got in a lift on holiday last week with 2 teenage girls in bikinis who promptly pulled massive duck faces and spent the entire ride up to the 8th floor taking photos. 2 otherwise pretty and happy girls immediately looked like 2 sulky, pouty, self obsessed morons. Why not just take one nice smiley pic??!

Really really really hoping this sort of shit isn't cool by the time DD is a teenager

isthismylifenow · 21/01/2017 11:30

Well yes, I do have a 14 year old dd, and I think we are getting past the duck face thing now. BUT, you all thought I was going to say that now she just takes selfies of herself looking, well, er, normal. No... now we got past the silly finger over mouth thing, now we have the 'startled wide eye thing'. I ask her why she doesn't just look into the screen normally, why must she be as wide eyed as if a human sized spider had walked into the room. Its how you take photos now apparently..... sigh

My 18 year old ds did make me laugh though. Taking a family photo and Christmas time. He says, ready everyone... right say:..... PRUNES.........slowly.

That is a tip for us 40 somethings that don't know how to do the duck face thing.........

SparklyFuckingBusinessFairy · 21/01/2017 11:30

Although if it is, I'll just laugh at her, I guess Grin

SecondsLeft · 21/01/2017 11:33

My pet hates are open profiles, encouraging strangers to 'snap me' (which I guess is send me a message on snapchat which my parents can't monitor) those who post pictures of their stomachs constantly, or ask people to rate them (lots of the boys seem to do this). But everyone can choose how they interact with their culture, it is what it is.

BrianCoxWithBellsOn · 21/01/2017 11:33

Oh yes, with the exception of hd brows, it is a TEEN thing. The boys are just as into it as the girls from what I've seen.

Sallystyle · 21/01/2017 11:34

the only difference is that he doesn't do the 'I'm not sure' 'look at dat face tho' and get loads of "aww Hun you r HAWT" in return.

My son does. Well, it's more 'Thanks, but you're good looking too' 'Nah mate, you are' 'No mate, you are really good looking' and on and on.

Or 'God U2's son, you look peng!'

My DN told me about "peng" over Christmas. Wtf is that shit all about?

I hate feeling old!!!

atheistmantis · 21/01/2017 11:38

Mine have neither done any of that.

BrianCoxWithBellsOn · 21/01/2017 11:40

I know "Peng" and have done for aaages.

But only because there used to be a MNer who kept us updated with stories of her "preggerz and peng" cuzzi 😂

WorraLiberty · 21/01/2017 11:40

As long as they're all 'on fleek' and nobody 'indirects' anybody else, they'll all have 'motives' to keep posting their 'peng' shots to their 'baes' and their 'boyz' Grin

Confused Confused Ok, I'm going to take myself outside and give myself a good kicking for posting that.

Ginorchoc · 21/01/2017 11:41

Grin s/r, n/r, tagged favs, you look beautiful, says you .... I find it hilarious. I have a 12 year old, with luck she doesn't do pouty but does do the filter pictures, puppy, flowers on her head, unicorn etc etc

SparklyFuckingBusinessFairy · 21/01/2017 11:42

The word "bae" actually gives me the rage. What, you can't be bothered to write or pronounce one fucking letter? Arrrrrgh!

WorraLiberty · 21/01/2017 11:44

Sparkly you need to get wiv da timez

BAE means 'Before Anyone Else'

BeachysSnowyWellieBoots · 21/01/2017 11:45

I've had one teen dd who didn't and one who does! Nothing to do with you, OP Grin

Just ride it out.....Flowers
