Melania has made a terrible mistake hasn't she?

Trump prods reluctant Melania to speak

She doesn't want to be there.

I feel quite sorry for her.

I do feel for her i get the impression she would rather be in the background

MrsderPunkt · 20/01/2017 11:20

The whole thing is just one long cringe. She doesn't want to speak, he forces her, she leans forward as if she's never seen a microphone in her life and parrots a few of his meaningless soundbites and shuffles off while he continues to patronize.

She has a hard act to follow with Michelle Obama, but surely she should make a bit of an effort to at least pretend to stand by him and have some ambition and drive. I do feel a bit sorry for her, it must be a daunting atmosphere for the uneducated and working as a model doesn't hold much respect in political circles. At least she can pay for help.

ClaryIsTheBest · 20/01/2017 11:23

I'm not sure what to say

She probably didn't expect or want to be First Lady, yes. With her husband's approval ratings and controversies, her background (she just doesn't have the same knowledge or resources Michelle Obama had) it's probably going to be very difficult for her. That must really suck and I do feel sorry for her, being in over her head in a situation like that

But she did want to marry Trump and get the benefits associated with that, right? Idk. I think she's quite smart. I suspect she walked in with her eyes wide open.

LeghamSparkl · 20/01/2017 11:23

I think what Aderyn said on page 3 has got it exactly right.

sadie9 · 20/01/2017 11:24

I'm not attacking her either. He put her on the spot in front of the whole world in a really dismissive way. She is going to have to learn how to 'manage' him in relation to her appearances. She needs to hire an advisor of her own, so that her people can talk to his people and brief her on what's going to happen. And write her speeches for her if she does want to speak, tell her where to stand, what's going to happen next etc.

WorraLiberty · 20/01/2017 11:24

A terrible mistake in marrying that hateful windbag. She should pull out. Like Trump's father should have done.

Sheba!! Grin

SparklyFuckingBusinessFairy · 20/01/2017 11:25

She entered into a business transaction when she married him: looks for money.

But given his role and his views on women and how far he potentially intends to set back women's rights, to say nothing of gay rights, immigrants, the poor, NATO, scientific research..... anyone standing by a man like that for his cash is a tool in my view.

MrsJayy · 20/01/2017 11:26

I dont want to patronise her but she is a trophy wife isn't she? her job is to stand about looking pretty and being by Donalds side she can't cope with the expectations being made of her.

dollydaydream114 · 20/01/2017 11:27

Pluto30 - are you being willfully obtuse, or do you genuinely not get it?

I'm not saying that Bill Clinton is a blameless man or even a good man. I'm saying that his marriage to Hillary is very obviously completely different to Trump's marriage to Melania and that it's ridiculous to compare the two.

I'm not sure why you think Bill and Hillary Clinton are even relevant to this discussion or why you keep mentioning him. Nobody brought them up. They have zero bearing on a discussion about Melania Trump. You really need to change the record.

SingingSilver · 20/01/2017 11:33

Really? Some of you think she has a charmed life?!

I'd rather be back in a damp council flat with £3 to my name than swap places with her. And come on... none of his wives loved him. They made a pragmatic decision to mate with His Vile Orangeness for economic benefit.

LeghamSparkl · 20/01/2017 11:34

Oh, 'windbag'

What a terrific term I have not heard for ages!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 20/01/2017 11:36

LadyGlitter staged so that she could look coy & he could be seen to be encouraging her, then when it wasn't a great speach everyone would feel sorry for her being in the limelight & not focus on the fact that she cannot deliver a speech fitting of a first wife. She needs lessons & fast,

Pollyanna9 · 20/01/2017 11:38

Am I wrong to be irrationally enraged by the shape of the man's mouth when he's caught photographically mid-tirade?

That stupid cartoon O-shaped gob just does something to me that makes me want to land a fist right in the gap!

UnexplainedOnHerCollar · 20/01/2017 11:39

She needs to hire an advisor of her own, so that her people can talk to his people and brief her on what's going to happen. And write her speeches for her if she does want to speak, tell her where to stand, what's going to happen next etc.

I wonder if Michelle Obama's free? :o If I was Michelle I might offer my services in the spirit of sisterhood.

UnexplainedOnHerCollar · 20/01/2017 11:41

Pollyanna me too, but it's not just the mouth, it's the hands. When he does that hand waving/finger and thumb thing while pontificating, I feel SO INFURIATED I want to throw stuff at the TV.

Bluntness100 · 20/01/2017 11:41

To be fair this is a very long term relationship, they have been together nearly twenty years. No one knows how the relationship works in private or how he treats her in private or her him. It's not like she got together with him a couple of years ago.

SparklyFuckingBusinessFairy · 20/01/2017 11:45

Bluntness - true - but his views on things are well known publicly, and she is supporting him and the hatred that he has whipped up. That makes her as bad as him, really.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/01/2017 11:45

I did feel sorry for her. She looked angry and fed up and he made fun of her as she walked off in front of everyone, talking about how she believes in barriers. It was nasty.

Gameboy · 20/01/2017 11:46

UnexplainedOnHerCollar - I couldn't agree more! I think some people are much better than others at reading and noticing body language, and it annoys me beyond belief that other people don't seem to 'see' the way he acts when he is lying/ being mysogyistic/bluffing/panicking etc - it's so flippin' obvious!

Bluntness100 · 20/01/2017 11:49

Bluntness - true - but his views on things are well known publicly, and she is supporting him and the hatred that he has whipped up. That makes her as bad as him, really.

SparklyFuckingBusinessFairy · 20/01/2017 11:55

Hmmmm. Interesting. I'm sure you're right for lots of Americans. And there will be a disgraceful amount who voted for him because they didn't want a woman POTUS.

But there will be some who voted because they thought even trump was better than a Clinton and a career politician. They will be the poorer voters - and the ones who will end up even poorer if he is the disaster everyone thinks he will be :(

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/01/2017 12:12

I feel sorry when she is expected to give public speeches and she obviously feels uncomfortable doing so but it comes with the role she now has. I doubt she will be that prominent her step daughter will take her place

As for being humiliated by her husband no First Lady has been as humiliated as much Hilary but looking at the bigger picture she stayed for many reasons which we don't know about but one being it should be her being sworn in today

Is the clintons marriage so different it may have started as a different relationship but many women who have the means to be financially secure and sill have a good career would have walked away she didn't if she did she would never have even been considered in the democratic running

lovelearning · 20/01/2017 12:18

It's possible to get things about people from how they talk and what they say, when it's your mother tongue, and that doesn't happen to the same degree when it's not.

UnexplainedOnHerCollar, oracle.

Bluntness100 · 20/01/2017 12:18

Actually if Hilary had walked away she may have had a better shot at being president. There was many scandals other than bill abusing and raping women, but the fact she stood by him knowing was a major nail in her coffin for many women.

She failed every single time she tried to nail trump on mysogyny, because the reality was she was married to a man much much worse and did everything she could to both protect him and stay with him. Being married to him is what opened the door for her, but it's also what slammed it shut in her face.

Bushymuffmum · 20/01/2017 12:20

Just the countless witness statements and lawsuits filed against him then hmm

None of which have been proven I believe? Just remember, the democrats wouldve sold their own liver to keep him out of office! Do you not think they are capable of making up a story or two with only too willing to comply witnesses?
