Trump prods reluctant Melania to speak

She doesn't want to be there.

I feel quite sorry for her.

Can't find any white supremacy on his website ( but it may well have been removed - wouldn't surprise me). I understand that the post about Trumps daughter adopting Jewish faith was not a criticism against Judaism itself.

But as an aside, I deleted my FB account a few weeks back - as it was full of anti Semitic abuse in my general feed.
One of the main themes being - that we should hate Trump because he has Jewish connections in his family. I reported this, but then FB said it didn't break any of their rules.
I know I am going off topic here, so apologise - but I'm a bit confused how anti semitism is ok on Facebook.

Saw this - compare and contrast the same scene, Obama vs. Trump, inauguration day.

GruffaloPants · 21/01/2017 21:58

Confusedno ones getting criticised here for being Jewish. Trump has allied himself to antisemites, so it's interesting to consider how his family feel about it given that some are Jewish.

GruffaloPants · 21/01/2017 21:59

Facebook seem to allow all manner of offensive stuff pickled.

PickledCauliflower · 21/01/2017 22:00

Wouldn't be surprised if Trump (or any current leader) put an anti Semitic promoter on board - it seems to be the flavour of the day (or decade) to repel Judaism. I just don't understand why?
I am not jewish myself - I don't follow any religion. I am concerned at the popularity of Jew bashing (to put it bluntly), and the easy denial of its existence.

YoullHaveACupoTayAhGwan · 21/01/2017 22:04

Mathanxiety - gosh, that video just says it all. I've never seen it before but if people only look at one video of Trump it should be that.

Whatever one's personal opinion of Melania's marriage/life etc, you cannot help but feel her humiliation there.

GruffaloPants · 21/01/2017 22:06

Well we tend to be seen as outsiders so that makes a bit of bashing/scapegoating more likely.

The current situation in Palestine doesn't help, lots of people (wrongly) assume all Jews support the illegal occupation. Many do, of course.

What's Sadiq done to rattle your cage ?
Being elected Mayor of London while Muslim Hmm ?

SpangledShambles · 22/01/2017 02:13

I expect that Trump's Dictator-chic aesthetic was aspirational for a girl from the Eastern European provinces.

Whatever anyone's opinion of her or Trump, Melania is a woman, not a girl.

People from Eastern Europe do not think as one mind about "dictator-chic" Hmm or anything else.

The term 'Eastern European provinces' is highly questionable.

HoHumming · 22/01/2017 02:34

Why did he steer lead her off the stage after she had spoken? I couldn't make out what he said immediately afterwards or what his quip about her believing in barriers meant while he didn't meant (given his Berlin Wall type objective).

He scares me.

squoosh · 22/01/2017 02:43

I think he led her off stage because her battery pack needed replacing.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2017 02:52

Facebook have a shameful reputation for allowing all sorts of offensive material stand.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/01/2017 02:55

Sadly 'jew bashing' is centuries old. They have been made scapegoat with depressing regularity..

MissNosey · 22/01/2017 05:21

And there was me thinking this thread was going to be about her plastic surgery....

BoffinMum · 22/01/2017 07:41

I don't think Trump wants to be there either, to be quite honest. The man must have the biggest case of imposter syndrome. You could see it in the way he was shaking just after winning the election, in the Obama meeting. To me it looked like a joke that had got out of hand, and a victory that was neither expected or, at root, wanted. Like Gove and Boris.

BoffinMum · 22/01/2017 07:42

And FWIW I think Melania looks absolutely fucking terrified.

sympatico1 · 22/01/2017 08:15

I agree, Melania didn't look at all happy and sadly and more worryingly, neither did their young son, he looked really scared poor thing.

SirChenjin · 22/01/2017 09:55

I agree Boffin

Megatherium · 22/01/2017 11:35

I suspect you're right, Boffin. I'd love to know how he felt once the ceremony was over and he realised he had four years of very hard work ahead of him.

SapphireBird · 22/01/2017 11:37

He decided to have the weekend off, didn't he? The job starts on Monday now...

I also think (like Brexit) he didn't expect to win...

MsHooliesCardigan · 22/01/2017 11:51

I agree that she looked terrified. I think that, if he hadn't run for Prez, he would have ditched her for a 30 year old by now as she's getting on a bit by his standards. I know he's 25 years older than her but he likes 'a young piece of ass'.

MrsDoylesTeabags · 22/01/2017 12:21

Came here to say the same thing Boffin I think he went into it to shake things up and didn't expect or want to win.
Now he's there he often looks like a rabbit in the headlights, that first meeting with Obama after he'd been elected was very telling.
It looks like a marriage of convenience, they do not appear very close or comfortable with each other.
