To not want to date a tory?

I know you don't have to date anyone you don't want to. But I'm currently dating someone who's told me he's a tory. He's a good person and I like him but I can't really get to grips with his ideologies about things. I'm politically aware but not active iyswim? I'd basically be ending the relationship purely because he's a tory but he's not actually a bad person so I feel a bit ridiculous.

I couldn't. Luckily DH shares my political opinions all the way, and DS also agrees with them. I would feel I had failed at parenting if I brought up a Tory.

DH's family and my parents are all Brexiteers which gives us lots to debate Grin

HobbitTankard · 17/01/2017 18:37

Surely bringing up children to think for themselves is more important.

I shared my dogmatically political parent's views up to adulthood but tbh even exposure at school to friends' views chipped away at the certainty. I don't want to hamper my children in the same way.

OP Lawyer you say? Chuck him..Wink

DameXanaduBramble · 17/01/2017 18:44

No Way could I date a Tory. No Way Jose..

buckingfrolicks · 17/01/2017 18:51

no never

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/01/2017 19:03

I would prefer a partner that had the same political views or similar

But if I really liked someone and they voted Tory I am sure we would have lots of debates but not sure I would feel different about them

I really don't support the all Tories are selfish and all labour voters are kind and more caring line as i have known many from both sides to be twats

Crankycunt · 17/01/2017 19:09

Dp is a tory, I'm not, I'm a lefty. We have some amazing conversations about politics and social issues, we listen to each other.

It can get heated, however we love each other, and we respect each others opinions.

BadKnee · 17/01/2017 19:12

All Tories have cold souls AND big noses. FACT!

sleepachu · 17/01/2017 19:14

*Tories wear jeans/blazers/shiny black shoe combos on nights out. Intolerable

Yes that's right - all 11 million of them, every single one. Bastards with their shiny shoes.*

Sorry. I don't make the rules.

whyohwhy000 · 17/01/2017 19:15

Depends on how right-wing. If he was a Brexit or Trump supporter, I'd stay clear of him.

Limitededition7inch · 17/01/2017 19:16

Grin no YABU in my opinion, but then I've been accused of being a bleeding heart socialist so what do I know?

In all seriousness, political party voting aside, it would be a deal breaker to me if someone didn't share my principles of addressing social inequality, helping those less fortunate and a good standard of education and health which is free at the point of use. I'm not saying all people who vote Tory don't share my views, but this government, despite its rhetoric and platitudes, doesn't seem to be on board with securing those principles in society imo.

Does he read the Heil?

HumphreyCobblers · 17/01/2017 19:19

I wouldn't date someone who was so narrow minded that they couldn't recognise that people can have a different political view to them and still be a decent person.

Limitededition7inch · 17/01/2017 19:19

Also that should read YANBU...Blush

BadKnee · 17/01/2017 19:19

Sounds as if he might have had a lucky escape.

BadKnee · 17/01/2017 19:20

HumphreyCobblers me neither.

Yanbu.

DJBaggySmalls · 17/01/2017 19:24

Oh yes, the debates on how little we should pay those scrounging disabled people. I can just see it now.

TreeTop7 · 17/01/2017 19:26

I saw a YouGov poll that showed that 40pc would vote Conservative if there were a GE now. You'd be narrowing your pool quite considerably, especially if you're looking for a man who is middle-aged or older (you don't mention your age). Perhaps give 'em a chance.

papayasareyum · 17/01/2017 19:28

I frequently find lefties so incredibly naïve and idealistic about the world. I want to give them a good shake. I hate Donald Trump but find it harder to understand why people support Corbyn.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/01/2017 19:32

"He's a good person" vs "told me he's a tory"

Make your mind up, which one is it?
