AIBU please tell me if I am but at swimming lessons with 2 of my ds in woman's changing rooms which has lots of cubicles. One mother is completely starkers at the lockers ( she is big lady so taking up a lot of room) she is getting dressed and shouting at her daughter who is over the other side with her back turned. Daughter is about 10 and is shouting mum you are so embarrassing there is loads of cubicles and everyone is staring. Mum is shouting it is you making everyone stare with your constant whining about everything. Everyone is staring because of the noise and because she is completely starkers and not even starting to get dressed AIBU to think this poor daughter was absolutely embarrassed and humiliated.

Twig would you have said such a thing, if the mum was a slim size 8, no probably not! They were embarassing with their arguing, yes at that age, mabey the girl is becoming more aware of what others think of her mum being naked. I would have been totally embarassed at my mum being naked with me at that age, because its your mum type thing.

Well she probably was but so what, I don't care if its my child or a stranger no one has the right to shame my nakedness so if somone did I'd bloody well take my time too I probably wouldn't but I'd think about it

I get some kids get embarrassed but they need to be taught it's never ok to do that to somone even a parent.

brasty · 13/01/2017 17:45

Being nude in a changing room is perfectly fine. The British can be weird about nakedness though. Shouting across the changing room is a bit much though.

teachergirl2011 · 13/01/2017 17:46

I find this offensive! I reckon if she was a size 8 you wouldn't have written this comment!!! It's a changing room!, is she supposed to rush to put clothes on in case she offends you?

I really dislike cubicles. They are small and feel claustrophobic. In mixed areas I will use them, but not in a women's changing room.

Earlgreywithmilk · 13/01/2017 17:51

I'd probably be more likely to come on and bitch if the mum had been a perfect size 8 actually (who does she think she is flaunting her 'perfect' body!?) [envious]

Earlgreywithmilk · 13/01/2017 17:51

I mean Envy haha

Twig45 · 13/01/2017 17:53

If she was size 8 and shouting at her crying daughter I would have said exactly the same

This is being derailed due to the ops mention of size. Which is valid I agree.

However, In her op she does not say who shouted first, mother or daughter. Thr daughter wasn't shaming her nakedness, she didn't scream, she was behaving like most ten year olds in that she was feeling embarrassed by The fact her mum was naked.

That's not an unusual reaction for a ten year old seeing a naked parent. Let's not pretend otherwise please. Most kids this age don't want to see their parents naked no matter what size they are, so understanding that sensibility and dealing with it sensitively is on the parent to ensure the child doesn't grow up with hang ups about nudity, as this girl may well do.

Earlgreywithmilk · 13/01/2017 17:55

When I see a naked woman in the changing room and she's bigger than me I usually feel a bit better about myself 'cos I think "if she's not bothered why should I be"? It's the same at the beach. I applaud anyone who has the confidence to do that, it's very empowering to not give a crap.

00100001 · 13/01/2017 17:57

Hmmm, I see it from both POVs

Yes, the girl was embarrassed, so YANBU Mum could have possibly been more discreet I'm sure in order not to embarrass her daughter.

But also, it WAS the girl making the scene by making people "notice" the mother's nudity.

supermoon100 · 13/01/2017 17:59

Blimey op's really getting in the neck isn't she. I certainly didn't read it as fat shaming, merely adding a bit of colour to the rather comical scene! Fat or thin, the mum was being an arse. I feel for the daughter.

00100001 · 13/01/2017 17:59

I fail to s why you mentioned her size though. I'm not sure it's relevant Confused

LucklessMonster · 13/01/2017 17:59

YABU

Good on the mother for making a point. Hopefully her daughter will realise there's no shame in being fat, unlike your boys who will grow up with your attitude.

liz70 · 13/01/2017 18:01

Was this a designated communal changing area, with benches and hooks, or just the area between the lockers iyswim, OP? Because if the former, if it were anything like our pool changing rooms, there's bugger all room there as it is, and I wouldn't much fancy having to squeeze past anyone's bare arse to get to my locker or a cubicle, whatever size they were.

Bluntness100 · 13/01/2017 18:05

YoScienceBitch · 13/01/2017 18:06

I would probably never speak to my mum again if she did this to me!

BluePancakes · 13/01/2017 18:07

ClaryIsTheBest "I wish the Uk had more (any?) naked bathing options."

The UK has loads of naked swimming options. Most cities and large towns have them and some smaller places too. They tend to be weekly/fortnightly/monthly as the whole place has to be hired out as a private hire, in case the poor, sensitive general public can't cope with the sight of normal bodies, preferring them squeezed in skin-tight material instead. Hmm
If you let me know which area you live in, I'll find out some details for you. Else, if you want a naked spa and hotel experience, I recommend Clover Spa in Birmingham.

Buxtonstill · 13/01/2017 18:09

No doubt if Dani Mathers had not got into hot water for ridiculing a fellow gym user, you would have been taking a photo and sharing it.Your actions are no worse than hers except you are hiding behind a keyboard and a screen.
Her size is irrelevant, poor attempt to add impetus to your fake concern for the child.

supermoon100 · 13/01/2017 18:12

Buxton what a load of utter nonsense. Now your just being silly and rather mean

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/01/2017 18:14

I stopped reading when you insulted the women's size. Are so perfect. We can't all be "twigs", love

EpoxyResin · 13/01/2017 18:14

If you don't want to see naked people, go in the cubicles yourselves!

Her daughter could have done.

Twig45 · 13/01/2017 18:16

Thanks supermoon 100 that was exactly what it was - nothing to do with size but if u all want to discuss that that's up to u - end of discussion from me
