To say no to courier.

Amazon courier just asked to use the loo. I was alone in the house with a baby. I said no and immediately dropped a note to Amazon to say I wasn't impressed that it made me feel uncomfortable.

I feel a bit bad now...remind me that I did the right thing please?!

Next time open the door with a kitchen knife in hand and you won't be vulnerable, won't you?

And stop being a twat and report people for things like this. I kind of hope karma exists, OP...

scottishdiem · 08/01/2017 18:55

Why you said no. Totally reasonable.
Why you then complained. Totally unreasonable.
How you have managed to be completely unaware of every newspaper saying amazon were dire, every news channel saying amazon were dire and all social media saying amazon were dire. Totally inexplicable.

SheldonCRules · 08/01/2017 18:56

Complaining was really mean, he asked the use your toilet not if he could take a bath, wash his clothes etc.

I don't ever recall a news story of a courier asking for the use of a toilet and killing the house owner after.

BabychamSocialist · 08/01/2017 18:59

Did the courier look suspiciously like Nigel Havers or someone who used to be in The Onedin Line? If so, you probably actually are in an episode of Midsomer Murders.

Rainbunny · 08/01/2017 19:02

I don't blame him for asking, we all have biological needs and in his job I can easily see it being a problem accessing a toilet easily. That said there was nothing wrong with saying no if you're not comfortable.

I wouldn't have complained about him though, way too harsh! Yes we live in a scary world where every stranger could be a serial killer but it really wasn't that "unprofessional" IMO.

That said though, I understand as a woman alone you may not have wished to have him enter the house and I'm not naive about potential risks. I actually had a similar situation with a furniture delivery man at an apartment I was living in. He was extremely chatty and friendly (in a way that was "too much" and put me on my guard). When he delivered the last piece he asked me if he could use my bathroom and I said no at that time because I had just moved in and the bathroom was a mess and also being used to store a bunch of random household objects while I unpacked so I was embarrassed about the state of it. However, the apartment building had a communal bathroom facilities on the floor below me at the resident's lounge area so I immediately told him he could use those, suddenly he was fine and didn't need to go that badly. My friend later told me it's common for opportunists to ask to use the bathroom to look for any decent prescription drugs that they can grab. I'll never know of course but it did seem strange that a guy needing the bathroom one second suddenly doesn't when it involves walking down a flight of stairs to the open bathrooms on the floor below...

I've heard of women being raped.

nookandcrannies · 08/01/2017 19:05

I think you were right to decline his request to use the loo and see no real problem with informing Amazon either. It's not so he can get fired - it's so remedial action can be taken.

My DM with severe bi-polar was burgled by a delivery driver for Next who was employed legitimately. Driver Used falsehoods to get inside the house sensing DM was vulnerable and then stole her purse and house key. It sparked off a manic episode for DM followed by a six month stay in hospital as she felt so guilty for allowing him in the house. The driver got caught and sent to prison (albeit a pathetic sentence) for this and many others he had stole from by popping in the houses. If his employers had been informed the first time he did it there may have been a different outcome,

Yes the Amazon guy was prob genuine but shouldn't have asked. There are lots of jobs where one has to hold it in. My job sometimes means I regularly can go six to ten hours needing a wee without getting an opportunity. Cross your legs and find a loo or a bush!!

viques · 08/01/2017 19:07

Someone up thread mentioned garages usually having loos. I have long suspected that they don't like people using them as on quite a few occasions at different garages I have been told that they are 'out of order!' I find pubs are a better bet, just offer them a donation for their charity box and most are quite happy to let you in.

Bit different for an Amazon deliverer I suppose, especially on a Sunsay evening when many retail parks are closed.

wheresthewine36 · 08/01/2017 19:19

I don't think you were wrong to say no but I do think you were wrong to report it.

BobbiPins · 08/01/2017 19:23

OP, you were right. No way would I let a stranger in the house, especially if, as you say, you were receiving a parcel for a neighbour!!!

You were right to contact Amazon - I understand what you wanted to achieve: you tried to suggest a policy where the couriers RECEIVED TRAINING about NOT trying to get access to other people's homes. Not everyone is capable of saying no (people with learning disabilities, or simply too polite/too afraid to offend or too naive). And unfortunately there were plenty of cases (including mentioned in this thread) where women were assaulted and/or robbed in their own homes by strangers they have let in.

ilovesooty · 08/01/2017 19:42

Anyone who thinks Amazon would do anything but terminate the man's contract is obviously deluded and pays no attention to the world around them. Reporting anything like this can only come from self absorption or spite.
The updates are hardly likely to improve the courier's situation either. What kind of bubble do you live in?

ArcheryAnnie · 08/01/2017 19:43

I understand what you wanted to achieve

Fo you understand what she very likely did achieve, BobbiPins? The delivery personely very lik losing their job? And you are OK with that?

SoupDragon · 08/01/2017 19:44

It's not so he can get fired - it's so remedial action can be taken.

And what do you think that remedial action will be? I imagine that he won't get a chance to make the same mistake again.

ArcheryAnnie · 08/01/2017 19:44

*delivery person very likely

Gwenhwyfar · 08/01/2017 19:47

" I regularly can go six to ten hours needing a wee without getting an opportunity."

I just couldn't do that and expecting people to is just cruel.

"Cross your legs and find a loo or a bush!!"

If you're not in the countryside, I'm not sure urinating in public is legal and it's obviously much more difficult for a woman.

BertrandRussell · 08/01/2017 19:48

Yeah, because Amazon are so very likely to offer training to their contracted out, minimum wage zero hour contract delivery men................

TheCatsMother99 · 08/01/2017 19:48

I hope he doesn't get in trouble after being reported.

YANBU in saying no but ywbvvvu in reporting, he might have been genuinely desperate and worried about making it to the nearest supermarket/petrol station etc

C8H10N4O2 · 08/01/2017 19:50

Its entirely up to you to say 'yay or nay' but complaining about a courier will likely lose them their job esp with Amazon.

They don't do 'remedial action' such as allowing time for loo breaks. They just sack (or rather decline to give shifts) via the intermediary agency so that they don't soil their own hands.

The impact on the employee is the same.

BertrandRussell · 08/01/2017 19:50

I saw my Amazon delivery driver peeing behind a tree- I have made a complaint about his disgusting behaviour..........

problembottom · 08/01/2017 19:52

I feel sorry for this guy. Of course you can refuse him the loo but to complain about him is really harsh. Really hope they don't sack him or dock his pay. Sad

Floggingmolly · 08/01/2017 19:55

Now you've got the fucking neighbour's checking their CCTV, instead of just handing the parcel over like a normal human being??

I hope he comes back and pisses through your letterbox if you've lost him his job, op, why on earth is someone else's parcel so important to you?

ilovesooty · 08/01/2017 20:05

I sometimes wonder in what capacity people like the OP and her partner/husband are employed. Do they even understand how insecure employment is now and what the impact of job loss is?

Kirriemuir · 08/01/2017 20:11

Going back to my message pages ago OP. I wasn't talking debenhams formtoilets. Lots of little individual shops don't allow public to use their toilets. I hope it's never you with your child.

1horatio · 08/01/2017 20:11

iloove

TBH (not trying to brag here) but DH or I could both lose our jobs and we wouldn't be in trouble for the next few years. But I still understand that this is no way to treat somebody. I think it's just thoughtlessness and being rude.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/01/2017 20:27

Bertrand please tell me your joking!
