To be so annoyed with other drivers 'waving' me on

I am quite happy to wait until a natural break in traffic to continue with my turning right manoeuvre thank you. I do not need you to come to a complete stop for me (which is dangerous and against the Highway Code), holding up everyone behind you, to then wave me on and get frustrated with me when I don't immediately take you up on your kind 'offer'.

I think I'm almost getting to the point where I am simply not going to move when I am waved on, and wait for the other driver to continue driving.

AIBU to be frustrated with drivers who take the rules into their own hands like this?

The driver on the sliproad should speed match and thus be able to pull onto the motorway safely and efficiently. They are not going to pull out regardless of whether you are there or not

Yes they are. They expect me to disappear. Sadly I can't.

Actually, expecting other cars to magically disappear is a common theme on the roads.

Potnoodlewilld0 · 04/01/2017 10:40

rain I think the op means when the cars are flowing freely and just stop to let you out.

BravoPanda · 04/01/2017 10:44

It's not op. Ignore the weirdo posters. It's fucking dangerous when people do that.

One muppet tried to give way to me on New years day on a very busy 5pt ROUNDABOUT!!

He nearly caused a 20 car pileup and then looked angry when I mouthed 'wtf are you doing?!' and gestured for him to keep going.

This time of year has all of the seasonal and sundays drivers out. Weekend warriors are fucking lunatics.

Itisnoteasybeingdifferent · 04/01/2017 10:45

I think it is dangerous..

We can only drive on the belief that people obey the rules of the roads. Suddenly stopping to let someone out of a side turning or across a road may seem polite. But the driver behind is not looking for such things. Despite what the highway code says, you cannot drive on the assumption the person in front may slam on the brakes for something to do. There is simply not enough room on the roads.

raindripsonruses · 04/01/2017 10:46

Rarely seen anyone anchor up to let someone turn right thus creating a queue behind them. Where does this happen so regularly? If the traffic is moving slowly either way it might happen. Not the same thing at all. I've been driving in big cities, suburbs and rural areas for 30 years.

AGnu · 04/01/2017 10:47

The thing that annoys me is when people are zooming along our road which always has cars parked along it's whole length meaning there's only space for one car to pass. I always keep an eye out ahead of the bend we live on & pull over in a driveway before I get to the bend if there's anything coming. They always pull in across my drive & then I have to sit there for ages waiting for them to move otherwise we'll get stuck! I've had a few dirty looks from people as if I'm inconveniencing them. I know it's not their fault but it's still really frustrating!

Megatherium · 04/01/2017 10:48

It's actually really dangerous.

How can it be? Sure, if you screeched to a halt in fast moving traffic it might be, but I've never seen anyone do that in decades of driving, and I do a lot of driving. Obviously the person being waved across still has a duty to check that there's no-one coming up a second lane, and that there are no pedestrians crossing ahead.

BravoPanda · 04/01/2017 10:48

Then you've been driving with your eyes shut by the sounds of it Hmm Or you're one of them.

The same kind of wally who stops to let a car out of a quiet sideroad when there's no traffic oncoming apart from one or two behind their own. Tossers.

pictish · 04/01/2017 10:48

Absolutely Chocolatedoll - just stick to the rules so everyone knows what to expect. It's far safer.

There's a notoriously bad T junction near where I live in which people pulling out of it can't see what's coming too well in either direction. They often have to wait for ages for a safe gap.
One day this complete idiot stopped before it, with a stream of traffic behind him to wave a Tesco delivery van out of it onto the main road, thus making the van driver think it was clear. In fact, I was coming along the other side of the main road and downhill at 60 and had to come to a screeching halt as the stupid van did indeed pull out straight into my path. I had my kids in the car as well.
I have never wanted to punch another driver in the face so much as I did that helpful idiot.

He nearly caused a 20 car pileup

How did he nearly cause a 20 car pile up?

I actually failed waving fucking pedestrians to cross the road Angry but in reality it's not up to you to make other drivers decisions

Pornoodle, of course you would be failed for that. Why is it the 'fucking pedestrians' fault? Your driving instructor should have told you.

Megatherium · 04/01/2017 10:50

Then you've been driving with your eyes shut by the sounds of it

If that was directed at me, obviously not, given that I've driven thousands of miles without incident.

JinnanTonik · 04/01/2017 10:50

I think what is annoying is when the 'waver onner' is totally oblivious to the fact you can't turn because of other traffic I.E. Turning right and inching forward into the traffic will cause you to obstruct that lane and therefore be breaking the law.

My main hatred is MEN, usually elderly, (BUT not all of you!) directing me into a parking space...

FFS!

1...I have just driven up so no need to panic that being a mere air head I won't be able to park without your assistance. No need to crap yourself trying to 'white knight' to my aid.
2...I can parallel park/reverse into a space in a oner, no shunting back and forward, I've done advanced driving.
3...I used to drive Four-Tonners over inhospitable terrain so the tiny dimensions of my pretty little sports car are well known to me!

Its being blonde I swear..as soon as old farts see my hair they think my brain has been removed!!

raindripsonruses · 04/01/2017 10:52

A 20 car pile up might be caused if no one is thinking about stopping distances and they are all tailgating each other. Some posters sound like very aggressive drivers.

MrsHathaway · 04/01/2017 10:52

There is a busy crossroads in our village with one major road and two minor roads. It's very common to want to turn right off the major road in either direction because the school is off one of the minor roads and the shops are off the other.

It's very very common to let people out there. It's mainly done by road positioning (hanging back) but sometimes someone will wave or show an open hand.

Lovely.

Except that the angles mean terrible glare at typical school run times, so you can't see through windscreens. One time someone just didn't go for ages, and it wasn't until he moved forward and right a bit that we could see into his car and realised he was vein-poppingly cross and gesturing.

Megatherium · 04/01/2017 10:52

Pictish, I would say the incident you cite was 100% the Tesco driver's fault. Who on earth pulls out to turn right into a main road without checking the traffic in both directions? When someone stops for you to come out of a junction, all they are telling you is that it's safe to cross their lane.

pictish · 04/01/2017 10:53

If he's outside when I pull up, my NDN likes to 'help' me to park by giving me unasked for directions, flapping his hands about and whatnot. I just ignore him and park as I would normally. God knows why he does this.

SirChenjin · 04/01/2017 10:54

Agree rain. Too many drivers are too many quick to blame the car in front for stopping or slowing down, when in fact they are the ones at fault for not leaving a correct stopping distance.

pictish · 04/01/2017 10:57

Mega yes I agree. And therein comes Chocolate's scenario whereby there is confusion as to what is going on. The twat waved, the van hesitated then decided it was a wave and popped out. I saw the whole thing play out as I approached on the downhill straight...I didn't imagine the van would go for it, but the asshole did.

They were both dangerous idiots imo.

raindripsonruses · 04/01/2017 10:59

Some of you really need to let driving stuff wash over you once it's done and dusted.

MarmiteDoesYouGood · 04/01/2017 10:59

Yes you are being reasonable.

Oh how dare people show some kindness and do a nice thing! Fuckers!

QueenMortificado · 04/01/2017 11:00

What is far more annoying is those drivers who sit at junctions waiting to come on to a busy road and then just edge in to the road, drifting their nose further and further out really hoping that someone will stop and let them out

You end up swerving around them. It's bloody annoying and dangerous

LittleBearPad · 04/01/2017 11:03

Bastard helpful other drivers being courteous.
