To be so annoyed with other drivers 'waving' me on

TheresaVGreen · 04/01/2017 08:49

I am quite happy to wait until a natural break in traffic to continue with my turning right manoeuvre thank you. I do not need you to come to a complete stop for me (which is dangerous and against the Highway Code), holding up everyone behind you, to then wave me on and get frustrated with me when I don't immediately take you up on your kind 'offer'.

I think I'm almost getting to the point where I am simply not going to move when I am waved on, and wait for the other driver to continue driving.

AIBU to be frustrated with drivers who take the rules into their own hands like this?

Plifner You've never turned right off a main to side road and have an incoming driver wave you across? It's an incredibly common thing to do. How long have you been driving?

myfavouritecolourispurple · 04/01/2017 09:36

What I really don't like is when people wave you across when there is nothing behind them! Look in your mirror.

And even more to the point, don't wave me across when a pedestrian is crossing the side road I want to turn into. They have right of way.

I don't think people should come to a complete stop to let you across, but it doesn't hurt to take your foot off the gas and let someone out that way.

StillMaidOfStars · 04/01/2017 09:36

oncoming not incoming

SirChenjin · 04/01/2017 09:39

YABU - but you carry on sitting waiting for a natural break in the traffic (I take it you don't drive often in very busy rush hour traffic?) while the rest of the world goes on its merry way.

StillMaidOfStars · 04/01/2017 09:39

Why would I beep at roundabouts? In what context?

Do you deny that the driver facing you has a naturally more complete/better view of everything occurring behind the level of your peripheral vision? Confused

myfavouritecolourispurple · 04/01/2017 09:40

However, I find the current trend for people in the left hand lane of a motorway to slow down and flash at you on the sliproad so you can come on in front of them no matter who is behind them

So I have to crash into them instead? They won't stop, they're going to pull out onto the motorway regardless of whether I am there or not. It's not always possible to move out into the middle lane to make space so the only option is to slow down.

Huldra · 04/01/2017 09:40

It happens all the time around here in rush hour traffic, it's a good thing. If someone stops on my right, I pull out infront of them and indicate right, then wait for the traffic on my left to stop, someone always does quite quickly. It keeps the traffic flowing and most people are nice with waves and smiles.

I do get the odd idiot though. I have to pull out of a road and cross over a bus lane to get into the left lane. Every few months some idiot leaves me space but gets annoyed that I don't go straight away. The whole lane is held up at lights anyway so it's not delaying anything. What the driver doesn't notice is they may have left room but there would be no room for me in front to pull completely in. Funny that I don't like to straddle a bus lane that's used by fast moving taxis, motorbikes and buses. I enjoy it if they beep and wave their arms then a taxis goes by.

Whatever the method, I am only too happy to take full advantage of their offer and cross the bloody road
Exactly. Any as a driver you should always make your own judgements

StillMaidOfStars · 04/01/2017 09:42

The driver on the sliproad should speed match and thus be able to pull onto the motorway safely and efficiently. They are not going to pull out regardless of whether you are there or not.

derxa · 04/01/2017 09:42

*Anyway

WaitrosePigeon · 04/01/2017 09:43

You sound like you lack confidence and experience on the road.

zofranks · 04/01/2017 09:43

It depends - do you pay attention to what the traffic is like behind you? If I am in a slow moving queue & I can see the car waiting to turn is holding up a big line or there is a truck that cannot get through I will flash them to go and wait.

TheMortificadosDragon · 04/01/2017 09:44

It can be helpful if theres slow moving dense traffic for the other car to hang back to give you a chance to turn, but not for them to get ratty if you don't immediately swing over regardless of other traffic or pedestrians.

dingdongthewitchishere · 04/01/2017 09:45

you should never do anything that causes the person behind you to Stop, Slow or Swerve!

Confused

It won't kill them to have to slow down a bit whilst you let someone go through, and I hope they are paying enough attention to the traffic in front of them not to be shocked because someone stops!

I am with you about the emergency stop or swerving obviously.

FatalKittehCharms · 04/01/2017 09:45

I would be questioning why people do this to me, to be honest.

I hardly ever come across this.

Do you drive a Discovery?

TheresaVGreen · 04/01/2017 09:46

Waitrose, why is a frustration with other drivers behaving dangerously a sign of lack of confidence and experience on the road? You couldn't be further from the truth in reality so it's interesting that two people have said this!

YANBU this is dangerous I hate it also when cars stop to wave kids over the road on busy school mornings (secondary) because they have no idea what's coming on the other side of the road.

StillMaidOfStars · 04/01/2017 09:49

Especially when said person resolutely refusing to cross the lane could be causing those behind her to Stop, Slow or Swerve Wink

SirChenjin · 04/01/2017 09:49

OP - why do you see this as dangerous driving?

StillMaidOfStars · 04/01/2017 09:50

An Enforcer. I knew there was a word for it. Someone preoccupied with making others stick exactly to their rules.

CoraPirbright · 04/01/2017 09:53

Depends rather on the junction, I think. There are a couple of really tricky junctions near me where I am thrilled if someone gives me a little helping hand. Otherwise you can sit there for ages, esp if your car is like mine and a little slow off the mark.

WaitrosePigeon · 04/01/2017 09:53
