..to let the bed "air"

Help settle an argument between my DH & I...

We strip the beds every Saturday (I know some MN'erst will think this is disgusting, but this is not the AIBU!).

I like to strip the beds and leave the bed to "Air" for the day. DH thinks this is a ridiculous notion and likes to get the bed stripped and re-made at the same time.

He gets irrationally annoyed when we come up to bed & rather than collapsing straight in, we have to make it. Whereas I love making it after the 'air-ing' and then collapsing into soft, beautifully smelling bed.

So, who is being unreasonable?

Holy crap, I change our sheets every 3 weeks, never air the bed, and have vacuumed it three times in three years...

BackforGood · 03/01/2017 18:00

I think 'airing' is a throwback to the days before quilts / duvets, when you had sheets and blankets all tucked in. With a quilt, it's hardly suffocating.
Totally agree with your dh - I hate going up to bed, to remember I've not made up the bed earlier, if ever I do that.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 03/01/2017 18:03

I never use top sheets, they get all tangled round my legs. My parents never have done either but MIL does and although I understand why I do hate it.

diddl · 03/01/2017 18:21

When I was a kid & we changed from sheets & blanket to a duvet, mum kept the top sheet & I guess I just followed suit.

Made sense to me to just wash the sheet rather than covers weekly, plus I think at first we only had one cover eachGrin

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 03/01/2017 20:27

I always dry and replace covers the same day, but we have a tumble dryer and my parents always have done too so drying duvet covers isn't a problem. Although line dried is much nicer for freshness.

bluebellsparklypants · 03/01/2017 20:30

yep leave it to air here too, I turn the dovet down every day to air the sheets aswel but I would make bed before going up to bed as to me it's too much faffing when tired and just want to get in it

MrsMarigold · 03/01/2017 22:13

I also wash the mattress protector when I do the linen. My DH is sweaty so I often end up washing twice a week and airing daily at the moment, our children aren't sweaty so I don't bother so much.

Coralfish · 04/01/2017 09:58

For quite a while I only had one set of bed linen and no tumble dryer... which meant in the winter I often had to use my sleeping bag for one night because my bed linen wasn't dry by bed time...

NewPapaGuinea · 04/01/2017 17:28

Nothing worse than walking into the bedroom, tired and weary to be met with a stripped bed.

Nothing better than walking into the bedroom, tired and weary to be met with a fresh bed. Ahhhhhh!

katseyes7 · 04/01/2017 17:31

l never make my bed til l put the electric blanket on about an hour before l go to bed. When l get up, l turn the quilt back neatly and shake the pillows, it's left like that all the time.
Especially in the summer, l wouldn't want to make it straight away as it wouldn't air off properly when you've been sweating all night.

Lweji · 04/01/2017 17:31

I do think a bed needs airing. But maybe compromise, strip it first thing and make it mid afternoon? No later then dinner time. Then it gets a good airing, but it's made in plenty of time?
This.

Ohdearducks · 04/01/2017 17:40

There's nothing more soul destroying than going up to bed and realising you stripped it that morning! 😩
Can't he just wait for you to remake it and then go up to bed as that's how you prefer to do it?

Deejoda · 04/01/2017 17:43

theonlygeorgie snap! Except I do air the mattress on change day for the whole day. I throw back the duvet every morning for the sheets to air. I have never vacuumed a mattress ever.

Lartma2 · 04/01/2017 17:44

Oh thank god! I'm reading these
Posts feeling like I've missed something in the rule book!

debbiew21 · 04/01/2017 17:45

I agree with a lot of the other posts. Airing the bed is a good idea but not making it up until bedtime leaves you with an annoying chore to do at the point at which you are both most likely to be grumpy/argumentative. Make it in the afternoon or early evening. That gives it plenty of time to air if you strip it first thing and you'll still get that lovely "clean bed" feeling when you do get to bed. Ha- on another note at least you have a DH that helps change the bed or even has any idea that beds are more desirable when clean/made!

Katherine2626 · 04/01/2017 17:46

Evidently there is about half a pint of sweat (yuk) in the average bed in the morning. I like to pull the duvet right back, open the windows, and shake and replace the duvet when I have had a shower and got ready - about half an hour or so. Covers get changed once a week, and I usually strip the bed, throw everything into the machine, and then remake the bed before dinner. Much better for the mattress to get a good airing I understand, and we also turn the mattress every month.

Craigie · 04/01/2017 17:48

He is. You shouldn't make your bed when you get up in the morning either, but should air it to deter dust mites from multiplying in the mattress.

MuseumOfCurry · 04/01/2017 17:59

You should definitely air the bed until early evening.

When on holiday, I spray our mattress with vinegar and cover in baking soda. Vacuum upon return. This refreshes it nicely. Wink

Jux · 04/01/2017 18:00

Don't forget to turn the mattress too!

pteradactyl · 04/01/2017 18:07

I strip beds, spray pillows matress and duvets with febreze, open windows. Drape duvets over the banisters and prop pillows up.
Drag myself to bed exhausted and then cry when the bed is still unmade and its freezing cold.

Floey · 04/01/2017 18:08

YANBU. Strip, leave to air with window open. I also hoover the mattress once a month, so I am probably madder than you, if there is insanity involved

idtwinplustoddlermum · 04/01/2017 18:11

Tell him to get a grip and make the f***g bed himself if he doesn't like your method! I've never heard of a bloke having an opinion on such things before so perhaps you are lucky! But no, I couldn't face going to bed and having to make it up late evening! I'm told that an electric blanket in full blast with the covers turned back is helpful (but no very environmentally friendly!)

pollymere · 04/01/2017 18:15

I like to air mine to kill off bugs. I usually turn the mattress every other time too.

florencebabyjo · 04/01/2017 18:20

I turn my mattress every time I change the bed, one week completely over and the next week just rotate. If you did this you can make the bed up straight awayGrin

BorisJohnsonsHair · 04/01/2017 18:27

Just noticed there's a lot of "we" change the sheets. Do most of you consider this a 2-person job? Just curious ..
