..to let the bed "air"

Help settle an argument between my DH & I...

We strip the beds every Saturday (I know some MN'erst will think this is disgusting, but this is not the AIBU!).

I like to strip the beds and leave the bed to "Air" for the day. DH thinks this is a ridiculous notion and likes to get the bed stripped and re-made at the same time.

He gets irrationally annoyed when we come up to bed & rather than collapsing straight in, we have to make it. Whereas I love making it after the 'air-ing' and then collapsing into soft, beautifully smelling bed.

So, who is being unreasonable?

Change beds Saturday morning,Hoover the mattress too, strip all the beds, throw open window to air for the day
make up in evening after @10hr airing

Birdsgottafly · 02/01/2017 21:47

""Am I the only only one that hoovers my matress every two weeks???""

If you read back, there were a few posts, including mine, that mentioned hoovering the bed.

Judydreamsofhorses · 02/01/2017 21:47

We never air the bed - stripped on a Saturday morning and there's a gap while we have a bacon roll, then it's made up.

PinkSwimGoggles · 02/01/2017 21:50

yabu
you should 'air the bed' every day.
just kick back the covers and open the windows in the mornings . you could then stretch to changing every other week

OhFuds · 02/01/2017 21:51

I leave mine to air but there is nothing more annoying when you've forgot that you stripped the bed then head to bed exhausted only to remember it needs made.

reallyanotherone · 02/01/2017 21:51

Sunlight (uv) is a pretty effective steriliser.

There is evidence that unmade beds left to "air" in sunlight have lower levels of bacteria and other microscopic living stuff.

So yes, i always air as much as i can.

RubyFlint · 02/01/2017 21:52

We strip the bed, air for an hour, then re make. Airing takes place with windows wide open, unless it's raining. I thought that was enough time to air, non?

AnythingConsidered · 02/01/2017 21:54

Just to be clear, we pull the duvet back each day too to "air: the sheets, but the "airing" I do on a Saturday, in my head, is specifically for the mattress...

I will concede it isn't fair to re-make at bed time & set a reminder each week to do it around tea time.

Strip once a week in the morning, hoover bed/headboard and bedroom, dust everywhere then fling windows wide open to let room air well. I'll then remake the bed late afternoon, before making tea so it's all done before bedtime. It's the best feeling in the world getting into a clean bed Smile. I do air the room every day though, for at least a few hours with the windows wide open.

1horatio · 02/01/2017 21:55

Our bed is aired everyday? Unless Inthink airing means something different than you do? Confused

But yes, stripped once a week.

Reality16 · 02/01/2017 21:55

Zoflora - on your bed Confused

HermioneWoozle · 02/01/2017 21:56

I air the bed by throwing the duvet back over itself and opening the window. With the sheets on.

I don't air the mattress in between changing bed linen.

JillyTheDependableBoot · 02/01/2017 22:00

Our bed gets aired every day because we never make it and sleep with windows open Sheets changed once a week.

KathArtic · 02/01/2017 22:02

It needs airing when you have slept in it. You should be airing your bed daily not weekly. Throw the covers back when you get out of bed for half an hour.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/01/2017 22:05

Sorry KathArtic, but should that half hour of airing my bed be before I leave the house at 6.30am to go to work or not. Pllleeease.

AliceInUnderpants · 02/01/2017 22:05

I strip my bed Saturday morning, put the sheets in the wash, then my mum comes round in the afternoon to help me remake it (either with the washed sheets, or ones out of the linen cupboard if I've not got them dried).

DD's sheets get changed either when they've had an accident, ask for them to be changed, or I know someone else will be there to make the bed for me (high sleeper and top bunk)

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 02/01/2017 22:06

it's the worst thing ever to go up to bed and realise you forgot to make the bed

dh is a bugger too...."you make a start and I'll come up as soon as i am done in the bathroom" .....he never malingers in the bathroom unless it's bed making night
if I could just make my side i bloody would....my pillows, my side with lovely sheets on and half the duvet, and he could gtf.
i'd have clean sheets on every day if i had staff. :o

on the bed airing side, I like to leave it all thrown back most days and leave a naked mattress to air that too!!

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 02/01/2017 22:08

**naked mattress on sheet changing day, not everyday!

RubyFlint · 02/01/2017 22:10

My DH gets mardy if we forget to put the sheets on. And he would rather sleep with a coverless duvet than take 30 seconds to put it on just before going to bed. He thinks airing is nonsense. But what does he know!

MrsJayy · 02/01/2017 22:12

I only Hoover my bed twice a year I'm obviously disgusting does it need doing every week?

Kirstyinnorway · 02/01/2017 22:12

I hang my duvet outside (sheet still on) every day. It's not something I'd have done in the UK, but very normal to see duvets hanging halfway out of bedroom windows here (Norway) and once you've tried it, you'll never go back!

Obviously easier if you have a covered outdoor space for rainy days, but suppose you could just do it on dry days.

Honestly, it will change your life.

MrsJayy · 02/01/2017 22:13

Every day ?

itstimeforchange · 02/01/2017 22:14

I now feel the need to air my bed every day. If only by folding back the duvet and letting the sun shine on it Grin

Nipperknight · 02/01/2017 22:17

I agree with airing beds but always remake before bed, it is annoying to remake at bedtime.

I make 2x superking beds alone at separate times obviously, it's not that difficult. Lay the quilt on the bed as it would be when it's got the cover on and sort of pull the cover down bit by bit like putting on tights?! 😬

Doesn't take that long once you're used to it.
