..to let the bed "air"

Help settle an argument between my DH & I...

We strip the beds every Saturday (I know some MN'erst will think this is disgusting, but this is not the AIBU!).

I like to strip the beds and leave the bed to "Air" for the day. DH thinks this is a ridiculous notion and likes to get the bed stripped and re-made at the same time.

He gets irrationally annoyed when we come up to bed & rather than collapsing straight in, we have to make it. Whereas I love making it after the 'air-ing' and then collapsing into soft, beautifully smelling bed.

So, who is being unreasonable?

You've got to air beds - the sweat evaporates and dust mites die.

HeCantBeSerious · 02/01/2017 21:33

Weekly?! Ours get done 3-4 weekly!

Musicaltheatremum · 02/01/2017 21:34

I stripped my bed this morning and have just remembered I need to remake it. Aaagh

AnythingConsidered · 02/01/2017 21:34

AverageWife - nothing as far as I am concerned, but I didn't want this to turn into a typical bed sheet bashing!

Chips&Gin - my DH thinks exactly the same as you!

I air the bed but put new sheets on at teatime to avoid the disappointment of realising it needs doing at bedtime!

civilfawlty · 02/01/2017 21:36

I do this, BUT I put the clean pillow cases and duvet and leave them folded, so I've only to put on the sheet.

And when I make the bed on a non-clean sheets day, I fold back the duvet to let it and the sheets air. Feels lovely at bedtime.

AnythingConsidered · 02/01/2017 21:36

Okay, so we are both right, but I need to find a compromise and do it an hour or so before bed time!

Our bed is a Super King so it needs both of us to make it (otherwise it takes for ever!)

Why would you spray disinfectant on a bed?

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2017 21:38

I do the same as you OP. I like the mattress to air for a few hours. It does annoy me if I forget to remake it before bedtime.

I don't manage to change the bedding as often as you, though

MrsJayy · 02/01/2017 21:38

I'm waiting to find the answer to the zoflora question Confused

AnythingConsidered · 02/01/2017 21:40

MusicalTheatreMum - DH completely agrees with that sinking realisation!

I wash, dry and re-make with the same sheets, as soon as they come off the line or out of the drier, preferably line dried for a gorgeous fresh fragrance. So they are aired but remade by early evening. Always turn back and air during the day on non-change days too.

AnythingConsidered · 02/01/2017 21:41

Me too MrsJay, never considered Zoflora before. Febreeze on occasion, but nothing more than that!

DD has a dust mite allergy. In all the stuff I've been given by the NHS about tackling it, nothing has ever mentioned that airing a bed will kill dust mites. Where is that info from?

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 02/01/2017 21:41

Oh my Good God, I have never let the mattress air, everShock, might start it in the Spring

I do turn it once a year, that'll have to do. I couldn't stand getting upstairs and seeing a bed needing to be made up.

hiccupgirl · 02/01/2017 21:42

Always leave the bed to air after stripping it off but also guilty of then forgetting about it and then having to remake it at bedtime.

llangennith · 02/01/2017 21:43

Strip it first thing but I try to remember to remake it long before I go to bed at night. Hate it when I forgetConfused

maddiemookins16mum · 02/01/2017 21:43

Strip it, air it (for about 30 mins, hoover the matress (yep), remake it).

Grilledaubergines · 02/01/2017 21:44

Usually strip and leave for an hour or so before remaking.

The thought of laying on a zoflora-d bed makes me feel itchy!

YoHoHoandabottleofTequila · 02/01/2017 21:44

The worst thing about changing sheets is realising at bedtime that it's not been done.

dudsville · 02/01/2017 21:45

If you Google about disinfecting a bed on the website "how stuff works" you'll find your answer. I personally really love going to bed with the scent of lavender. But my reason is mainly dogs and the many illness we have each had.

maddiemookins16mum · 02/01/2017 21:45

Am I the only only one that hoovers my matress every two weeks???

MsVestibule · 02/01/2017 21:45

I leave mine all day, but mainly because we only have one lot of bedding - it takes 2.5 hours to wash and several hours to dry on the Aga, so it's bedtime before it's ready!

I agree that a good compromise is making it at teatime.

Fairenuff · 02/01/2017 21:45

He gets irrationally annoyed when we come up to bed & rather than collapsing straight in, we have to make it.

That's not irrational, that's normal.

Air the bed by all means but make sure it's made up before you go up to bed (or allow him to make the bed).

LockedOutOfMN · 02/01/2017 21:46

We change the sheets on Fridays and air the mattress during the day. Usually put the fresh sheets on before bedtime.

On the other days of the week, we fold back the duvet and open the window for an hour or so in the morning to freshen up the bed.
