..to let the bed "air"

Help settle an argument between my DH & I...

We strip the beds every Saturday (I know some MN'erst will think this is disgusting, but this is not the AIBU!).

I like to strip the beds and leave the bed to "Air" for the day. DH thinks this is a ridiculous notion and likes to get the bed stripped and re-made at the same time.

He gets irrationally annoyed when we come up to bed & rather than collapsing straight in, we have to make it. Whereas I love making it after the 'air-ing' and then collapsing into soft, beautifully smelling bed.

So, who is being unreasonable?

I strip early in the morning wash, tumble dry then remake in the afternoon. Bed gets an airing but is remade well before bedtime. I will also warn the hubby I am doing it in case he wants an afternoon nap in bed

QuinionsRainbow · 03/01/2017 14:02

Neighbour across the road from us puts her pillows up at her open bedroom windows every day, come rain, hail or shine.

WindyFlowers · 03/01/2017 14:21

It's called a midnight surprise in our house. I strip bed as soon as I'm out and remake in the afternoon.

Andylion · 03/01/2017 15:19

Does everyone wash their duvet covers every time they wash their bedding? Do you use a top sheet between you and the duvet?

Gottagetmoving · 03/01/2017 15:23

We leave the bed to air every day by pulling the duvet back down to the bottom of the bed.
When we change the bed we leave the mattress airing half a day before re making...and I usually vacuum the mattress and no, we don't change it every week either.

FV45 · 03/01/2017 15:24

Washing bedlinen = pillow cases, duvet cover and bottom sheet. No top sheet on any of the beds.

I have 2 sets of bedding so don't need to one I've taken off to be laundered before re-making the bed. But I will leave the naked bed, duvet and pillows a while before re-making anyway.

TheOtherGalen · 03/01/2017 15:28

I like to air on the side of caution.

BananaThePoet · 03/01/2017 15:31

LOLS @ TheOtherGalen.

Airing is one way to keep house dust mites under control. They are less likely to thrive in an airy environment. I read it somewhere on a pest control website.

Anything that keeps the 'cootie' level down is okay by me Smile

Blueskieslover · 03/01/2017 15:35

Andylion Ooh I like your idea of a top sheet under a duvet and then not having to wash the duvet cover every wash....

littlemissM92 · 03/01/2017 15:51

I pull mine back every day whether clean sheets or not and windows open all day when at work always feels fresh

PyongyangKipperbang · 03/01/2017 16:00

Oh that feeling of going up to bed and seeing a naked mattress.

There is no worse feeling in the world. Ever.

Millymollymanatee · 03/01/2017 16:09

I turn the duvet right back every day, to let the bed air.

blitheringbuzzards1234 · 03/01/2017 16:16

I don't know why but changing the bedclothes is almost the most irritating job in the world for me (and it only takes me around 10 minutes) apart from the frigging dusting.

Therefore I prefer to do the job all-in-one-go and have done with it. If I did it your way I'd jolly well explode if I then went up to bed having forgotten to re-make it.
I don't believe that I've ever been bitten by a bed-bug.

Rosa · 03/01/2017 16:20

Air regularly . In fact most mornings I open windows to get the air through the house for about 20 minutes . Here Italy it is perfectly normal !

johnwinstonlennon · 03/01/2017 16:21

I think it's ideal to CHANGE bed linen once a week, and air the whole thing every day. the problem is that in the uk there is too much humidity, so opening the windows may make things worse. not too much sun either so I don't know. in dry climates yes, otherwise not. sun is always good on bed linen and mattresses.

Ericaequites · 03/01/2017 16:22

Does anyone with a no spring mattress actually hump up in the middle while breakfasting, as they do at the Chalet School?

DistanceCall · 03/01/2017 16:23

I change my sheets once a week, and air my bed everyday in the morning, while I breakfast and shower. Leaving the bed to air ALL DAY is overdoing it, IMO. 15 minutes or so of airing every day is fine.

FV45 · 03/01/2017 16:24

kipper
How about just throwing yourself on the sofa after working/evening stuff/kids etc etc and your teenager asking for help with the fitted sheet on the high sleeper. Sigh.....
Or leaving him up to it and listening to him seemingly dismantle the room to get it on. Life skilz I tell myself.

High sleepers have a lot to answer for!

FV45 · 03/01/2017 16:25

Ericaequites que?

1horatio · 03/01/2017 16:38

erica

What? What kind of school humps mattresses? 😂😉

diddl · 03/01/2017 16:59

For me, airing the bed is leaving the covers back, not leaving it stripped.

So do you only air you bed once a week, Op?

LizB62A · 03/01/2017 17:04

I air mine as much as possible as it kills the dust mites

diddl · 03/01/2017 17:07

Sorry, missed some pagesBlush.

I don't think that it needs the full day to air, but ours is usually left for a while.

If you have your own mattress & duvet, he could make his side straightaway & you could make yours at bedtime!

Oblomov16 · 03/01/2017 17:16

I do think a bed needs airing. But maybe compromise, strip it first thing and make it mid afternoon? No later then dinner time. Then it gets a good airing, but it's made in plenty of time?

diddl · 03/01/2017 17:38

I've always used a top sheet in Winter as it's easier to dry than the duvet covers.

Thought that's what everyone did.
