Lyrically, musically or any other reason.

I can't stand Spandau Ballet's "True" - there I've said it. I'm out and proud.

"Why do I find it so hard to write the next line?" - perhaps because it's a fucking shite song Tony and it makes no sense at all!

I expect most of you are too young to remember when the song 'No Charge' was top of the pops. I can't imagine how, everyone I knew agreed that it was vomitous and just thinking about it made most people's faces implode until they looked like cat butts.

That song can play at my funeral so I can annoy everyone I know one last time.

I can't give a competent review of 'The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins' as I can only watch the accompanying video for 10 seconds before having to stop it or risk my brain melting.

GilMartin · 06/01/2017 02:41

Jack my mother was a big fan of that song and would sanctimoniously quote that at me in a querelous tone when she felt I'd displayed ingratitude or she owed me some money.

Years later I found she'd copied oit.The lyrics in a notebook and I think it appealed to her martyrish approach to motherhood.

'For the time and the tears that you've caused through the years [dramatic pause] no charge'

'For the toys food and clothes and for wiping your nose [dramatic pause] no charge'

  • Yeah but you still owe me that fiver you took out of my piggybank to buy a packet of Rothmans with.

Also who cincieves of their relationship with their child as a series of credits and debts? My mother clearly.

chipmonkey · 06/01/2017 03:12

"Jealous Guy" by Bryan Ferry/ John Lennon. Controlling twat, more like.
"I just called to say I love you" by Stevie Wonder. Possibly because it was No. 1 for so long and played to death on the radio.
"Young girl" by Gary Pucket and The Union Gap. Just yuck.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 06/01/2017 03:18

Gil Shock. Ugh, how horrible. That song is what should be used any time someone needs to know what 'cringe making' means.

I think we used to make up bad lyrics for it too:

'For the time that you spat, on the neighbour's black cat [dramatic pause] no charge'.

GilMartin · 06/01/2017 03:19

chip Limmy's show pointed out just how wrong 'Young girl' is...

TheMysteriousJackelope · 06/01/2017 03:19

Thinking about it, making up bad lyrics for 'No Charge' would probably be a great Mumsnet thread subject.

GilMartin · 06/01/2017 03:23

Jackelope I wished I'd done that too now. Might have taken the wind out of her sails somewhat.

ghostwatch · 06/01/2017 03:32

Jackelope "For the time that your log got stuck down the bog
No charge"

TheMysteriousJackelope · 06/01/2017 03:34

Just tried to watch 'The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins' on YouTube again. That thing is definite proof of consistently high abuse of LSD in Hollywood during the late 60's. If it had been in the 80's I'd have thought the whole lot of them had been huffing glue. Good lord.

Lynnm63 · 06/01/2017 03:36

I hate Yellow Submarine. My kids turn it on in the car and piss themselves laughing when I swear and turn it off.
Blurred Lines although I find the Bart Baker parody of it very funny.
I hate gotye someone that I used to know, I much prefer the Glee version by Darren Criss/Matt Bomer.
Young girl the words to that are cringy.
DH hates anything by 10cc but I'm not in love is the worst. I don't think I've heard more than 2 bars of it before he switches it off.
Ds2 hates ken Dodd happiness, guess what dh plays to get him out of bed

Pretty much all of Radio 1 output. I refuse to listen when I'm driving even when dd whines.

Anuvvername · 06/01/2017 03:56

Oh dear, I love Spandau, I love Shania...... Quite surprised no one's mentioned my other fave, Olly Murs (or maybe I've missed it!)

Can't stand Fields of Gold by Sting, though. I will go to great lengths to avoid listening to that!

Right, I'm off to name change again!

LoupGarou · 06/01/2017 04:10

We live in bum fuck nowhere in North America and the only radio station we can pick up is a country music one, good job I love country music and my absolute most hated song is Dierks Bentley's Different For Girls. The whole bloody song just grates on my nerves, so sexist and demeaning for both men ad women. DH thinks I'm reaching too much into it Hmm.

TheMysteriousJackelope · 06/01/2017 05:15

ghostwatch Grin.

We definitely need that 'No Charge' thread.

CitrusSun · 06/01/2017 06:01

Once saw someone wearing tshirt I Came On Eileen

ghostwatch · 06/01/2017 06:19

I've had R Kelly "Vibes" stuck in my head most of my night shift and it's honestly making me feel physically sick ? Good thread though !

Giggorata · 06/01/2017 10:48

What Saag said...."To be honest I'd probably hate most things sung by anyone under about 30 because they aren't taught how to sing properly and take breaths in the middle of phrases and they usually have nasty thin whiny voices that don't project and sound utter shite without some fancy sound effects being added when its amplified"

I don't get rap, it's like being at an auction or else it sounds very cross & shouty.

And there are some truly awful Xmas songs, the one I hate most is a monotonous repetitive dirge which goes on forever, "sung" by some bloke...l don't know what it's called.

permanentlyexhaustedpigeon · 06/01/2017 14:21

I like a lot of rap. Lots of it is thought-provoking, talented and manages to do some really astounding things with language (Eminem's Lose Yourself: "All the pain inside amplified by the fact that I can't get by with my nine to five and I can't provide the right type of life for my family 'cause man, these God damn food stamps don't buy diapers")

Much of the crap in the charts, however, is exactly the opposite, particularly when combined with shrieky/ autotuned 'singing'. Kanye West springs to mind, as does a lot of the misogynist gangsta stuff.

I first heard No Charge when John Peel presented it as one of the worst songs of all time (IIRC Renee and Renato's Save Your Love was in the same list). Still can't hear it without cracking up. We need the thread.

Somebody I used to know, anything by Rhianna, and the Chris de Burgh Christmas song ('it went AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!') give me the rage, but there are many others..

aquashiv · 06/01/2017 15:41

Rave Music - you needed to be on drugs to listen to it
Anything Heavy Metal - shouty feckers the lot of them
Tell you what I want what I really want by the Spice Girls irritates the hell out of me, they don't tell you what they want at all.
Jazz music - makes my throat constrict.
Anyone on X factor who shouts holds notes for ages and people call it singing.
The Corrs - they irritate me with their faux Oirishness.

Its made me angry typing this but I feel a bit better thank you.

flowergirl20 · 06/01/2017 16:03

The Lighthouse family. Music to lose the will to live to.

MrsMattBomer · 06/01/2017 17:05

I was stuck in a traffic jam today listening to a radio station where they played "Caravan of Love" by the Housemartins three times in a row accidentally.

It just reminded me how awful that song is - I REALLY hate it!

PumpkinPie2016 · 06/01/2017 17:19

Stay by East 17.

Heard it a couple of times over Christmas and it annoys me so much it's unbelievable Angry

The lead singer sings through his nose and his voice grates on me!

FancyPantsDelacroixTheFirst · 06/01/2017 17:19

For the sake of doing the link right I shall try again:

Urrrrgh-Ewwwwwwww.
Cheeseandbeansontoast · 06/01/2017 18:09
