To not want to go skiing

Dp and his family love skiing, and dp has gone most years since he was about 12 with them.

I've never been skiing, I'm not a very active person and it's not something that really appeals to me. Me and dp have agreed that if I was to try it we would go with mutual friends, some of whom had never been skiing before either and some who are more experienced like dp. I do feel nervous about going but I feel if I had someone to learn with I'd feel better about the situation.

Dp's family keep trying to convince me to go with them. I've polietrly declined each time and for the last couple of years I've been studying for my masters and so can use that as a reason for not attending as I can't get the time away. I think this has annoyed them, and dp did admit to me that his df thinks I should just suck it up and go for 'family'. Every time we see them they badger me about going even though I have said I don't want to. Dp has no issues with me not going so I don't understand why his parents do.

Aibu? Should I just go for the sake of family relations?

I'm away skiing now. I'm a crap skier but it's the holiday not the skiing I love. It's magic. We're in a chalet so don't have to lift a finger, gorgeous scenery, homemade afternoon tea by the fire before masseur comes. Give me this over a summer holiday any day.

merrymouse · 24/12/2016 22:46

Grin hope you enjoy Mexico!

38cody · 24/12/2016 23:24

I go every year and I NEVER EVER SKI. DH and 4 DC all ski but I do not - I relax, walk, sit and read loads and loads. I enjoy views and good food and always find company if I want a chat but I don't ski. I love a chance to enjoy my own company in a beautiful setting with the kids occupied.
However, if you really don't want to go then just say a really really firm NO! Not now, not ever.

YANBU. I went skiing and hated it.

Your DPs family sound awful and YADNBU to ever refuse to go on holiday with them.

RoseGoldHippie · 24/12/2016 23:54

Even if you hate skiing you will probably love the apres ski! Just curl up in front of a fireplace with a good book whilst they ski!

Bogeyface · 24/12/2016 23:57

RoseGold tell me you are taking the piss...you have to be...no one could be that stupid.

Suddenly reveal your intense life-long devotion to competitive cheese-rolling or Buzkashi and insist they accompany you on the sports holiday of your choice (Kabul is the best place for Buzkashi) before you can even think about a skiing trip.

:o Thank you!

Develop a fear of heights but agree to try cross country skiing which is lovely and enables you to get some exercise and see bits of lovely countryside

"I know people who do it on the cheap"

How cheap? A number or I don't really believe it.

I went extreme tubing at Telford snow dome.

Easily the most unpleasant and terrifying experience....

I'd say to rule it out without the ability of anyone to criticise you, book a skiing lesson at a local snow dome on proper snow and see if you find it a. terrifying with the constant fear of broken limbs or b. you actually enjoy it.

If it's a., don't go.

Btw, there may be skiiers on the nursery slopes - but there have been numerous serious injuries from 'better' skiers smashing into novice skiiers on the lower slopes. A DF's missus broke her coccyx and had to be helicopter lifted off the slopes and she was a v experienced skier. You can never tell what might happen...

Enforced 'enjoyment' is NEVER enjoyment.

My record is £2000 for a week for five people, Black Forest.

ErnesttheBavarian · 03/01/2017 10:46

cross country skiing is seriously hard work! I tried it last year (the utter terror of down-hill skiing is not for me). Day 2 I couldn't help but groan loudly (think female tennis player) with every movement of a limb as I crawled round, being speedily overtaken by octogenarians with buns of steel. I mean, I'm not that unfit. I ran a half marathon in October, but still, muscles in unknown places and all that.

We just came back from skiing. I walked the dog. ski passes for 3.5 days came to over 500 euros. Luckily we didn't have to hire any equipment. It's not a cheap activity.

Mind you, I found Austria to be miles more expensive than Germany.

woesinwonderland · 03/01/2017 10:55

YANBU but then again I don't "get" skiing. Going up and down the same slopes all day for a week? I'm not sure I'd want to pay £2k+ to drink hot chocolate or read a book either.

BoffinMum · 03/01/2017 22:02

You usually go around different slopes, bars and so on, and it's really exhilarating whizzing around looking at the lovely scenery in the fresh air. You get lots of exercise and relax later in the sauna. You can eat loads of great food because of all the exercise. Your thighs become more toned. You look cool in photos with the ski goggles perched in your head and a bit of a tan. What's not to like?

Aroundtheworldandback · 03/01/2017 23:16

Back from skiing yesterday. I'd love to know what's not to like. A couple of runs in the morning then chilling in sun on deckchair with mulled wine. Another couple of runs then lunch in gorgeous mountain place with live show and fab music. Another couple of runs then back to chalet for tea and cakes by the fire, followed by massage to ease muscles before dinner.

I do hate skiing!Smile

Gwenhwyfar · 03/01/2017 23:36

" You look cool in photos with the ski goggles perched in your head and a bit of a tan. "

No, sorry, nobody looks cool in skiing gear.

edbear · 04/01/2017 00:42

skiing is horrendous....do not give in...I did and 15 years on I'm subjected to annual torture. I loathe it....feel claustrophobic, like mountains closing in on me, loathe the traipsing round in torturous shoes....it's hell!! and worst of all if you go with people who love it, you will be dragged out of bed at an unearthly hour to get the best snow...shudder!!
