WIBU to leave 10 year old at home with his nan while the rest of us go to Florida?

10 year old son has caught a nasty bug and he is pretty much in bed 24/7 and has been for a couple of days. He has been having lots of fluids but has the full d & v. He is ok though but no way is he ok to come away. We rarely go on big holidays but do go to somewhere in Europe every year. We are going to Orlando for Christmas I have 5 children and I think it will be really magical. He is very close to my nan and they spend a lot of time together. The last thing I want to do is leave him but I do have 4 other children that cannot wait for this holiday and I don't really know what to do. WIBU to go away with other children and leave him here with his nan?

Yikes, when do you leave?

chitofftheshovel · 20/12/2016 07:18

Have you broached the subject with him?

ImYourMama · 20/12/2016 07:19

When are you due to leave? Do you have travel insurance that will cover his costs?

DorothyL · 20/12/2016 07:20

Not okay, you'll have to find another solution! When do you leave?

Sirzy · 20/12/2016 07:20

I couldn't do that. I would be on the phone to the insurance getting it cancelled and plan to do it next year instead.

Awful timing but I couldn't leave one child out.

user1482217471 · 20/12/2016 07:21

Tonight/early tomorrow morning.

No not properly just said about the holiday and he's just replied you'll obviously have to leave me here but I think that's in an annoyed way but can't really tell as he is unwell.

Yes, yes you would.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 20/12/2016 07:21

What? Yes, YWBVU!! What kind of parent leaves a ten-year-old at Christmas and swans off on holiday with the rest of the family?

The only way this would be remotely possible is if you buy another flight (unaccompanied minor) and get your nan to put him on the flight on Fri/Sat.

Bobochic · 20/12/2016 07:21

Of course you have to leave an ill child behind.

Gallavich · 20/12/2016 07:21

Fuck that's awful
I'm not sure what you should do for the best but leaving him is hideous

intheknickersoftime · 20/12/2016 07:21

Erm yes yabu. You can't leave him behind. Surely you have insurance? And my three DC have never set foot outside the UK so they do have a big holiday every year from the sounds of things. My oldest is 14.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 20/12/2016 07:21

Not U in the circumstances, although I don't know that I could do it. Sad

Poor wee lad, how heartbreaking for him. He'll be away from you on 25th?

You'll need to bring him back a humungous present.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 20/12/2016 07:21

Poor kid-I'd say yabu but I can see why you're conflicted.

DoItTooJulia · 20/12/2016 07:22

Poor thing. Are you sure he'll be too poorly?

I don't think I could leave him behind, but I understand where you're coming from. What a difficult situation. I hope he feels better soon Xmas Smile

DorothyL · 20/12/2016 07:22

Are any other adults travelling?

MrsSnow · 20/12/2016 07:22

Travel insurance. You can't leave him out especially if it is something everyone has been looking forward to.

What would you do if the others got ill along the way?

DoItTooJulia · 20/12/2016 07:22

Emoji fail. Was supposed to be Flowers

user1482217471 · 20/12/2016 07:22

Ok it's a bit harsh to be horrible about it!! I'm really trying to find a solution.

OP posts:
Fishlegs · 20/12/2016 07:23

No way would I do that to my 10 year old. Apart from being upset about missing the holiday, he'd want his mum when he was ill.

SuperRainbows · 20/12/2016 07:23

Don't think I could leave him. Could Nan take other children?

Fishlegs · 20/12/2016 07:24

Also surely it's going to pass through all the other kids over the next week or two.......

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 20/12/2016 07:24

Can't you stay with him and fly out later when he's recovered? D&V tends to be short lived so should be fine in a day or two.

I'd rather fork out for new flights than leave him behind, that would be awful Sad

user1482217471 · 20/12/2016 07:24

If another adult was flying I'd get them to take the other children and I'd stay at home but it's just me.

OP posts:
DorothyL · 20/12/2016 07:24

Was it just going to be you and the children going, or another adult as well?

I would say could another adult take the children today, and you and ds follow in a few days when he's better.

donajimena · 20/12/2016 07:24

No you can't. Well you shouldn't. How disappointing but thats what insurance is for.
