Dad 'choosing' to pronounce DD's name differently

runningaftermydreams · 19/12/2016 19:09

This is the first post I've written. Apologises for bad spelling... I am writing in anger.

So my DD is 3 months old and I given her an usual name, which I have accepted people will/do pronounce it wrong because they don't know how to say it, its easy Once you know though. My Ddad seems to struggle with it, except today I was visiting with my DC and my Ddad said her name wrong (Again!) so my Dsis corrected him (again) to which my DDad response was "Well it shouldn't be pronounced like that it should be pronounced the way I said it, I am saying it this way"

It then got heated because I told him you can't do that it will confuse her as it doesn't sound anything like her name. He said shes too little to notice. I said he needs to call her by her name that we have given her end of!!
Im fuming because he blatantly told me hes choosing to pronounce it differently, I know this won't be the end of it. I am hurt by this. I know he doesn't like it because it's not a "solid english" name (hmmm my mom is german so hes being a dick), but I wish he would respect our choice.

I am worried about what DP will say when Ddad says her name over Christmas at family gatherings. Think its going to kick off, as this won't be the first time recently where DP has disagreed with him.

AIBU to be angry about this? Wwyd?

I thought Noel Gallagher daughter pronounced it
Ah-ny-ees

spidey66 · 19/12/2016 19:27

i knew there was a reasn for me thinking it was An-nay-the perfume.

hoddtastic · 19/12/2016 19:27

who is saying 'an-nah-ess'?

It's either 'Annay' or 'Ann-eye-eese'

happychristmasbum · 19/12/2016 19:27

I don't think he is choosing to pronounce it in a way you don't like, it's just a very odd pronunciation.

If you choose to give your child a name with a non standard pronunciation then you had better get ready for a lifetime of people pronouncing it with the standard pronunciation No point getting uptight about it.

Reality16 · 19/12/2016 19:28

is is pronounced anay Confused

TheNaze73 · 19/12/2016 19:28

Your dad is being a Wichser

runningaftermydreams · 19/12/2016 19:28

The "umlaut" is supposed to change the pronunciation or something

OP posts:
GoofyTheHero · 19/12/2016 19:28

Another one who thought it was usually pronounced 'a-nay'. Prepared to be told I'm wrong though.

PlumsGalore · 19/12/2016 19:29

Pity they don't have those perfume ads for anais anais anymore, that's the only way I can say it properly.

doctorweenie · 19/12/2016 19:29

Google says it's Anna-eece

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 19/12/2016 19:29

In the interests of er... research, I have just googled Anais Gallacher's Youtube channel (yes, she does have one!)

She seems to pronounce her name An-nay-ess.

GoofyTheHero · 19/12/2016 19:29

I'm struggling to pronounce it 'ah-nah-ess', I can't make it flow.

DonkeyOaty · 19/12/2016 19:29

Yes I would prn Ann eye ees

Oh dear though, he is being very rude. What a charmless oik.

MrsJayy · 19/12/2016 19:30

Anais' is pronounced Anay is it not ? Anyway however you are choosing to pronounce your dad needs to do the same dont be angry it will not do you any good it wont confuse her she will just think grandad cant say her name properly

runningaftermydreams · 19/12/2016 19:31

Ive since mentioned the conversation to my Dsis who has said that dad doesn't want to say the way we do Sad

OP posts:
Motherfuckers · 19/12/2016 19:31

The perfume was not pronounced Anay though. It is a French brand, so like the name it is pronounced An-ay-ees.

MollyHuaCha · 19/12/2016 19:31

I know an Anaïs, pronounced Anna-eeess. Gorgeous name.

If it's any consolation, one of my DCs has had his name mispronounced by my batty old dad since birth. We spent the baby and toddler years correcting him, but now he's a teen, we just live with it!

GoofyTheHero · 19/12/2016 19:31

How does your dad pronounce it?

WheresTheEvidence · 19/12/2016 19:32

I'm really struggling to pronounce her name - have tried several times to copy what you've written phonetically. I would also say Anais if I just saw the spelling

JingleBellCock · 19/12/2016 19:32

Its An-eye-ees - as in the writer, Anais Nin.

The perfume is also named after her...so certainly isn't pronounced An-nay Hmm (or An-eye-ess...eek!).

Your dad is being unreasonable, though, as his pronunciation is just bloody wacky.

MrsHathaway · 19/12/2016 19:32

Holy fuck.

It's French. The perfume pronunciation isn't the only one. OP hasn't made up a name!

Even if she had, though, he's being an arse if he's continuing to mispronounce it on purpose.

Artandco · 19/12/2016 19:33

It's 'an-eye-es'

The perfume is French and isn't pronounced anay by the company

DangerousBeanz · 19/12/2016 19:33

Whilst I sympathise with you OP, I'm afraid that if you choose a name with an alternative pronunciation you have to accept this to a certain extent. When She starts school shes going to get a different pronunciation with every teacher, TA and supply teacher.
Yep your DF is being a arse about it, but this is going to be a long long battle that you'll fight repeatedly.

TinselTwins · 19/12/2016 19:34

I tried pronouncing it with your phonetics and really struggled, it really "sticks" and is difficult to say

I've only ever known it pronouces Ah-nay, or occassionally Ah-nay-s

I usually hate when people don't try to pronounce names right but I cannot get your phonetics out OP it doesn't seem to work/flow in any way

If I was your kid I'ld change it back myself to ah-nay.. so you may as well give up now
