Fully expecting to get a kicking for this.
On Facebook, in shops. People who seem to have their entire sense of humour based around wine.
Every post on Facebook is some crappy meme about wine o' clock, prosecco or a 'cheeky' glass of wine.

Fresta spot on post.

I don't mind Prosecco but it much more inspid that cava or champagne and generally has a softer bubble. It's unfortunate that it's more expensive than cava because some people assume that cava is lesser quality which it really isn't.

BabyGanoush · 11/12/2016 16:22

Prosecco is an easy drinking bubbly for people who don't want anything more complex.

It's an undemanding drink.

I like it, for these reasons, but am just as happy with cava (Freixenheit) or champagne.

But I'd rather drink a good prosecco than a cheap champagne.

The thing is, with prosecco, you get a reliable decent drink for an affordable price, with a classy sounding name Wink .... no wonder we all fall for it!

bigredfireengine · 11/12/2016 16:23

Consider Laurent- Perrier and Bollinger. They are totally different champagnes. I would have a good prosecco over any Bollinger vintage any day.

My at home wine is usually a french cremant (limoux, bourgogne or Jura) but sometimes prosceoo.

I have had some great Cava is Spain (my family live there) but seemingly less are imported into the UK any more as it is out of fashion. There used to be some decent ones quite easily available.

TurquoiseDress · 11/12/2016 16:23

Actually, this thread has now inspired me to get testing all the different cavas & prosecco in our local supermarket.

Christmas coming up & all that...perfect excuse! Xmas Grin

zukiecat · 11/12/2016 16:24

I don't drink alcohol, and every year we get a hamper at work

Every year there is a bottle of vodka, one of red wine and one bottle of prosecco, DD2 is giving the prosecco to her friend, but unless I find a colleague who wants my other two bottles they will go down the sink probably

NicknameUsed · 11/12/2016 16:26

"My friend who actually makes wine said anything over £10 a bottle is overpriced"

BowieFan Does he make proper wine from grapes or wine from kits/foraged foods? If it is the latter he would say that wouldn't he?

I suspect my husband and most wine experts would disagree with you.

bigredfireengine · 11/12/2016 16:27

My friend who actually makes wine said anything over £10 a bottle is overpriced and there's no real difference in quality. Equally he told me if you want the best bottle of wine in a restaurant, never order the most expensive as it's usually artificially inflated for show-off people who want to show how much they've got. Usually the 2nd most expensive is the best one.

Does you friend make wine at less than £10 a bottle Smile

I find in a restaurant it is better 'value' to go for more expensive wine as the mark up is less. You might pay £50 for a £10 bottle of wine (when £50 is the cheapest wine on the menu) but for often very little more you can get a £40 bottle (that you might baulk at the price if buying for home).

Lilaclily · 11/12/2016 16:27

Zukie - don't pour down the side of, donate to the local school or church for their next Xmas fair, give to the postman or bin man at Xmas, surely better than just pouring away?,!

SquedgieBeckenheim · 11/12/2016 16:28

I do not get the prosecco thing at all! But then I never liked sparkling wine. Thankfully, being pregnant, I wont get a bottle of the vile stuff from MIL she forgets it was BIL's ex that likes it, not me I did, however, get a bottle in secret santa Xmas Hmm

NicknameUsed · 11/12/2016 16:28

"but unless I find a colleague who wants my other two bottles they will go down the sink probably"

Can't you donate it to a fundraiser's tombola stall or regift them? It seems such a waste.

FrickOnAStick · 11/12/2016 16:29

Anything over £10 is overpriced

user1480946351 · 11/12/2016 16:32

don't understand how some people have managed to make liking it their ENTIRE personality

It's a few jokes and pics on facebook, its not anyones entire personality. How insulting you are, you arrogant snobs!

Jellybean83 · 11/12/2016 16:38

I love prossecco, I don't have Facebook so you won't find me prossecco o'clocking but I like wine with a bit of sparkle to it, it's tastier than cava and not as expensive as champagne. Definitely my tipple of choice.

bigredfireengine · 11/12/2016 16:41

Actually, this thread has now inspired me to get testing all the different cavas & prosecco in our local supermarket.

It has made me open a bottle. One left after a recent party- not bought by me but I have bought it in the past. It is the very quaffable Waitrose
san leo prosecco.

ElleMcElle · 11/12/2016 16:43

Yup. Tedious. People confuse having Prosecco with having a Personality.

YADNBU. I like the very occassional glass of good red, but I do not need stationery, wall art, jewellery, t-shirts, or my FB status to confirm that fact. I definitely do not get the obsession with Prosecco... 2 statuses alone amongst friends today proclaiming their love for it and how it is what Sunday is all about. Weird and sad IMHO.

hmcAsWas · 11/12/2016 16:55

I enjoy champagne, cava and prosecco - I always have...which is not surprising given that its basically the same thing except that one is from France, one from Spain and one from Italy. My penchant for c,c & p is long standing - I don't do bandwagons. Will be happy when folk move of from prosecco because I don't want to be lumped in with all the sheep! When not drinking dry sparking wine I can be found with a pint of bitter.

Am predicting that gin and tonic will be experiencing a bit of a revival shortly (based on recent observations)

FlyingElbows · 11/12/2016 16:56

Let's be honest, we know it's not all girlie fun, fluff and rainbows in the Facebook Prosecco army's lives. It's a thin and unconvincing attempt to disguise the mundanity of their lives. It's a bit more uplifting than writing "I spend 78% of my time crying into the sink and my life is nothing like I thought it would be."! I have a friend who posts a lot about how mad and crazy her drunk nights out are but the reality is that she's married to a neanderthal who does nothing for her and she has to take her baby to work. I'm sure a glass or two of Prosecco is actually one of the more exciting aspects of her life. Poor cow.

user1480946351 · 11/12/2016 16:57

I think I can picture your facebook

I very much doubt it.

YokoUhOh · 11/12/2016 16:58

I started writing this thread 2 months ago OP and got distracted. FB is full of:

Prosecco
Fuzzy pictures of prosecco
Women squee-ing over nights in/out with my girlies with prosecco
Prosecco tagging
Prosecco quotations

It's as if someone hates women and wants to reduce us to a ridiculous stereotype with bubbles for brains.

See also: topless pictures of Channing Tatum (squee!), nails (squee!), engagement rings (squee!)

I prefer a pint of pale ale myself.

The80sweregreat · 11/12/2016 17:00

I scroll past all that. I like wine and fizz, but i appreciate not everyone does and a few people i know are teetotal! ( and a few family members could do with cutting back a bit as well, not that i would tell them .)
Snatched, you can still get babycham in some shops.

MycatsaPirate · 11/12/2016 17:00

YANBU.

Half my newsfeed is full of comments about 'cheeky glass of wine' and I just wonder if they are borderline alcoholics or feel the need to come across as more 'cool' than they actually are.

My sister is prime for this. Every picture she posts is her out drinking somewhere. A 'cheeky' gin. A 'cheeky' wine.

Alcohol is not cheeky. It's a drink. It's not big and it's not clever.

I had a shot of Baileys in my coffee the other day. I managed to refrain from posting about it on facebook.

CockacidalManiac · 11/12/2016 17:01

I think there is an element of normalising 'drinking as a stress reaction technique' about it all.
