Fully expecting to get a kicking for this.
On Facebook, in shops. People who seem to have their entire sense of humour based around wine.
Every post on Facebook is some crappy meme about wine o' clock, prosecco or a 'cheeky' glass of wine.

It smacks of The Emporers New Clothes to me. People jumping on the bandwagon, professing to love the stuff in case they are seen as untrendy if they actual confess to hating the stuff and not seeing what all the fuss is about.

NotAMammy · 11/12/2016 15:23

BigRed I thought champagne tasted the same so was never tempted to taste it after trying it once and not liking it.

The desire to force prosecco into everything is a bit tiring. Apparently if you're female you love prosecco, rose gold and chocolate. You may not deviate from this.

You should also feel 'naughty' for imbibing anything other than water and natural yogurt. 'oooh, a cheeky glass of fizz' 'oh I really shouldn't have a cupcake, but I deserve it'

Xmas Hmm

Orange wine is set to be the next big drink. They'll be selling it in tanning salons.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 11/12/2016 15:24

I first had Aperol Spritz in France. They had a promotion on so I thought I'd try one...it was good. Haven't got around to buying any here yet.

I had Raspberry Gin last night - because it looked pretty on the shelf in the pub. It was 'ok'.

I was going to have Mulled Wine while writing the Christmas Cards tonight...but actually, now you mention it, the lovely cold Prosecco might be a nicer option...

But yes, I have noticed the huge amount of 'Prosecco Gifts' in the shops this Christmas and thought to myself 'It seems like the new 'Keep Calm & Carry On'...'. Which is fine by me. Very very over 'Keep Calm' everywhere.

It's harmless.

When I did drink wine (in my teens), I used to really like Blue Nun and Liebfraumilch, particularly Blue Nun I think. A poster has just mentioned those and it took me right back...

maddiemookins16mum · 11/12/2016 15:26

I've just opened a "cheeky"* bottle of wine as I'm peeling the spuds for dinner. I'm concerned there might be none left by the time DP and DD get back from Christmas tree buying (my worst nightmare and I hate that they'll spend £40 on a real tree when my Woolworths 1997 version would be perfectly fine).

I like Prosseco, Cava tastes nasty sometimes. That said we rarely drink it as it goes straight to my head. We'll have a bottle on Christmas Day though with nibbles before lunch, a £5.49 bottle from ALDI.

  • pun intended.
oldbirdy · 11/12/2016 15:26

I cannot drink prosecco, it gives me the most horrendous headaches. Like after 2 glasses I have a raging hangover the next morning and a dodgy stomach as well.

Champagne doesn't affect me the same way. Or a good quality white wine. Or even cava.

Whenever I go out with a certain group of mums who are a tad more image conscious all the bloody drink is prosecco, even though I can't share the bottle, they look horrified if I suggest a cava or other wine.

Frankly I don't get it at all.

HaloOnFire · 11/12/2016 15:33

I don't get it either tbh.

I also don't get why when flying out on holiday you simply have to have beer at 9am and post it on Facebook.

BowieFanMk2 · 11/12/2016 15:40

To be fair my life does revolve around wine (not in an alcoholic way, but I do like a nice bottle on a weekend) but I'm not cutesy about it. I like wine - end of story. Prosecco is just cheap champagne isn't it?

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/12/2016 15:40

What is Rose Gold?

From someone who doesn't drink, smoke wear make up or eat meat. I have an allergy to dairy and wheat so chocolates are a no no. I also don't own an iron, a handbag, any jewellery or a microwave.

I think the world has passed me by on what women should eat, drink.own and do.

Now give me a sledgehammer and I can appreciate that.

SapphireStrange · 11/12/2016 15:41

How an anyone say they don't like Cava but love Prosecco?

I've had lots of indifferent cavas but always enjoy prosecco.

Is that pretentious?

maddiemookins16mum · 11/12/2016 15:42

HaloOnFire....yes, the photos in (usually Neverspoons) of a full English with two massive pints of lager at 05.40am!!

SapphireStrange · 11/12/2016 15:42

God, I know. Why do people think anyone cares?

I'll have to watch myself, I might say that next time someone does it on FB and ruin a beautiful friendship.

bakingaddict · 11/12/2016 15:45

Nickname I've only drunk it in those countries. I think it originated in the Tryol (sp) region or so someone told me when I mentioned how much I enjoyed it, which I guess includes Italy Germany Austria but you've given me an excuse to go to Lake Garda now lol

Memoires · 11/12/2016 15:47

Give me kittens any day.

frikadela01 · 11/12/2016 15:49

I don't care what other people do however I hate the assumption that I am a woman therefore I must love proseco and gin. I have 3 bottles of proseco from various gifts I've recieved this year and a load of gin miniatures of brands I've never heard of so assume they are wanky ones that was given to me as a work leaving gift. I don't even drink really.

Ill take them to peoples houses over Christmas to get rid.

bigredfireengine · 11/12/2016 15:51

They taste slightly different compared to each other

Slightly? Like chicken or beef- they are both meats but you wouldn't lump them together for taste.

You must all drink really low grade wine. Drink less and drink better is my stance. Quality over quantity is always a good decision.

BowieFanMk2 · 11/12/2016 15:53

Oh yes, what is the obsession with Gin? It's like you hit 30 and suddenly you have to start drinking old lady drinks.

If you're going to buy me booze (always a popular choice) I want Vodka or Rum. And vodka isn't even hard to buy, because they nearly all taste the same.

BeverlyGoldberg · 11/12/2016 15:54

I think prosecco is really nice but the current obsession with it is making it a bit naff. I like it as a cheaper alternative to champagne hat is nice and light to drink with dinner or a special-ish occasion.

I had a few friends who don't have much going on in their lives and love to post about alcohol on Facebook, particularly prosecco.

Fresta · 11/12/2016 15:59

No, I don't drink low grade wine, but neither am I a snob about it or try to pretend there is a massive difference between a prosecco and a cava. Some Cava is rank because it is so low quality, but a good cava and a good prosecco are fairly similar and a very good Cava is more similar to champagne than a prosecco.

Most very cheap wines are not that nice, but to be honest, once you get past a certain price point it is simply snobbery- a bit like a designer late on a dress.

NicknameUsed · 11/12/2016 16:10

"Plus I think prosecco is too sweet."

Erm, really? I have never tasted sweet Prosecco. Are you sure you aren't confusing it with Asti Spumante? I only see Brut or extra dry in the supermarkets and they are not sweet at all.

I must admit that Cava and Prosecco taste the same to me. OH is a bit of a wine enthusiast so we don't buy bargain basement wines unless they are good.

I8toys · 11/12/2016 16:12

Me neither. Don't like fizzy stuff as it just gives you wind. Rather have a cocktail or a spirit.

BowieFanMk2 · 11/12/2016 16:12

My friend who actually makes wine said anything over £10 a bottle is overpriced and there's no real difference in quality. Equally he told me if you want the best bottle of wine in a restaurant, never order the most expensive as it's usually artificially inflated for show-off people who want to show how much they've got. Usually the 2nd most expensive is the best one.

Oooh I love my prosecco!

And champagne but obviously prosecco is a cheaper option.

Not keen on cava tho, it definitely has a different taste IMO after 1 small glass that's quite enough! Grin
