Fully expecting to get a kicking for this.
On Facebook, in shops. People who seem to have their entire sense of humour based around wine.
Every post on Facebook is some crappy meme about wine o' clock, prosecco or a 'cheeky' glass of wine.

And yy to the endless comments about being out with the girlies. You are all in your 30's and 40's ffs.

hmcAsWas · 11/12/2016 17:03

Reviewing this thread, I think the biggest problem some of you face is being on Facebook. Why not close your Facebook account and be blissfully ignorant of what is currently in vogue? Life is not nearly so irritating when you cull social media

Chippednailvarnishing · 11/12/2016 17:05

There was a Daily Fail article the other day with women dressed in primary coloured dresses, tan tights and nude shoes bemoaning that them getting horrifically pissed / conceiving a child on a one night stand / behaving like a knob was all oh so out of character and it was all prosecco's fault.

Like Prosecco is a mate of theirs who has total control of their willpower. It was almost funny, except it was the typical Daily Fail job of trying to show women to be brainless dicks.

FurryLittleTwerp · 11/12/2016 17:05

I don't mind prosecco, but if I'm going to have sparkling wine, I'd rather have champagne, Veuve Cliquot or Pol Roger for preference.

If I'm not going to have sparkling wine, I'll have a G&T, thanks very much, as long as it's a gin I like & good-quality non-diet tonic Grin

Or when you stop sneering and judging people who are meant to be your friends and family. Life is better when you are less of a dick.

mummydawn07 · 11/12/2016 17:07

i enjoy a nice glass of wine or 2 at the weekend and I also like all types of wine, I don't drink during the week.. I too don't get all the hype around prosecco or champagne for that matter, unlike some other women I don't try and make the fact that I enjoy wine into something humourous, I think that tv and social media are a lot to blame for it.

DramaInPyjamas · 11/12/2016 17:07

I didn't realise until the age of 32 that prosecco was a drink, I honestly thought it was ham
I think I was getting confused with prosciutto

My excuse is I don't drink!

YokoUhOh · 11/12/2016 17:10

drama pics of raw ham all over FB captioned 'cheeky prosciutto night in with the girlies' would make me snort Grin

FrickOnAStick · 11/12/2016 17:11

hmc, gin and tonic has been having a revival for a while now. Not necessarily in the FB meme sense but there has been a huge increase availability of good quality craft gins and how they should be matched with nice tonic (not bloody Schweppes - hideous, sweet stuff).

bigredfireengine · 11/12/2016 17:16

God I am doomed.

I drink sparkling wine.

I drink gin

Luckily I don't do Facebook Smile

I have drunk fizzy wine as my wine of choice (when not dining) for 32 years and gin for 30 years so I don't think I am swept up in any craze.

hmcAsWas · 11/12/2016 17:17

I am blissfully ignorant if what's on trend Frick, but since I am going to a friend's on NYE who likes her gin, what nice tonic would you suggest?

bigredfireengine · 11/12/2016 17:18

Since the start of fever tree being widely availableI think.

BowieFanMk2 · 11/12/2016 17:19

No, proper wine. It's sold in Waitrose and everything!

I think his exact words were "If you just want a bottle to drink during the week with dinner or over the weekend, don't spend over a tenner as it's wasted money" but he did say for a gift or a really special meal it's worth paying that tiny bit extra.

He is right though that most people can't tell the difference between a £20 bottle and a £200 bottle of wine.

Fever tree- the original or I like the light. I personally don't like mediterranean but by DH does

What gin will you be having?

Chippednailvarnishing · 11/12/2016 17:21

Having a cheeky prosciutto as it's wineoclock Grin

5to2 · 11/12/2016 17:23

Prosecco is just cheap champagne isn't it?

No - prosecco is fairly priced sparkling wine. Champagne is mostly over priced by threefold at least. The stuff in the £25-35 bracket is ok but no better than an £8 bottle of prosecco. With most champagne, you are being had, that's all.

bigredfireengine · 11/12/2016 17:23

He is right though that most people can't tell the difference between a £20 bottle and a £200 bottle of wine.

Have you drunk a lot of £200 wine? Which £200 wine have you drunk that tastes like £20 wine?

I haven't and so can't comment but I have drunk a lot in the up to £80 (merchant or supermarket not restaurant) My DH is a wine drinker. You can taste the difference between a £10 bottle and a £40 bottle or a £20 bottle and a £70 bottle.

FrickOnAStick · 11/12/2016 17:23

I prefer fentimans tonic to fevertree but either are good, hmc.

hmcAsWas · 11/12/2016 17:25

Shortcross gin bigred - was given a bottle recently and told that it is good apparently?

MysticTwat · 11/12/2016 17:25

Oh hello userblahblahblah welcome to MN

Yes we are all snobs, aren't we dear.

bigredfireengine · 11/12/2016 17:29

I like fentimans with bloom.

Now I want gin and I have opened prosecco

Oh no, I've never had a £200 bottle of wine but friend has. His wine is around the £25 price mark and when he worked in a different job for another wine company, most people could only tell a very slight difference in their mid-price bottle and most expensive one in a blind taste test.

Of course, that's not true if you're a wine aficionado but I imagine a lot of people can't really tell that much of a difference.

Hulababy · 11/12/2016 17:30

Surely they've all moved into Gin now anyway?!

I like both to be fair but Gin definitely seems the drink of choice everywhere I go, by all manner of people.

BillSykesDog · 11/12/2016 17:30

It's marketing. Find something bloody cheap, import it, mark it up by 800% and market it as 'classy' you can make a bomb.

The latest wheeze on this is Cremant de Loire which is being aggressively marketed as the next big thing and the new Prosecco.

Bottles that sell for €1:90 in France are going for a tenner a pop on the British High Street this Xmas. Go figure.

Are you angry because you're one of those people? Do you post "Girl's night out" on facebook and have a t-shirt/phone case/pillow/framed picture saying "Prosecco O'Clock"?
