'I can't even cook cheese on toast'

Prepared to be told IABU.
Having coffee with a relatively new friend, I said something about making Christmas dinner, she then said that she 'couldn't even make cheese on toast'. I was visibly gobsmacked and as it turns out she really can't cook anything!
She was really offended that I was so surprised, and told me she'd always been too busy to learn. I've offered to help her with some basics but she's ignored my message and cancelled our DS's playing together Shock
To not drip feed I was really shocked, going 'what not even. ....' and questioning what her kids eat probably a bit too much.
But really, wouldn't you be shocked if a 40 year old couldn't cook anything at all?

Definitely some sexism here- while we may be disapproving lots of men get away with say they "can't cook". Her DH/P may do all the cooking. If it was the other way around people would barely bat an eyelid.

MyWitlessPal · 08/12/2016 19:18

I couldn't be arsed, no.

Not so much 'can't read' as 'won't read'.

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 19:19

Primaryteach87

NO SEXISM BECAUSE THEY ARE BOTH FEMALE.

And my penis bearing partner is more than capable of cooking a spectacular meal (and does so for approximately half of the week (which is some amount of cooking in our household)).

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 19:23

WitlessPal You are about four hours late to the argument, and a poster in here has been pretty damn brave and shared her story on why they struggle with cooking and it has nothing to do with a disability (in my mind, sorry poster if you feel differently with that one) and so you are actually incorrect. And a little rude. There are some real barriers to people cooking that exist and that are not disabilities. Actually, two brave posters have shared personal scenarios.

My father could cook very well. He rarely did. Why? Because my mother wouldn't let him. Not a control issue. Not because she felt threatened - she was a very good cook. It was because when he cooked, he used every bloody dish in the house!!!! Grin

Now. Back to sweet potatoes.

A treat topping for baked sweet potato is also a marshmallow (this is a Southern USA Thanksgiving special).

No, no, a thousand times no. And this is from an American, mind you! Marshmallows do not belong on sweet potatoes. They belong on s'mores. They belong on the end of a sharp pointy stick over a fire. But they do not belong anywhere near sweet potatoes!! Blasphemy!

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 20:57

It was pretty good. Granted it was our first thanksgiving in the US. And everything was really good. I can't actually remember what else we had though now. Just that it was all ace.

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 21:02

My aunt always made scalloped corn. I used to love that.

We had Thanksgiving dinner here with turkey and pumpkin pie. Yum.

I am going to look up scalloped corn.

Bake the sweet potato, cut it out and mash it and put it back in the potato case (forgot the word) and then but little marshmallows on the top and place back in the oven until the marshmallows have melted on the top.

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 21:18

You're welcome. That was one of our traditional Thanksgiving side vegs.
