'I can't even cook cheese on toast'

Prepared to be told IABU.
Having coffee with a relatively new friend, I said something about making Christmas dinner, she then said that she 'couldn't even make cheese on toast'. I was visibly gobsmacked and as it turns out she really can't cook anything!
She was really offended that I was so surprised, and told me she'd always been too busy to learn. I've offered to help her with some basics but she's ignored my message and cancelled our DS's playing together Shock
To not drip feed I was really shocked, going 'what not even. ....' and questioning what her kids eat probably a bit too much.
But really, wouldn't you be shocked if a 40 year old couldn't cook anything at all?

I know several ladies who don't cook but they feed their kids far healthier foods than mums who can. We're talking elaborate salads, baked vegetables, toasted sandwiches filled with fresh fruit or veg.

But, baked vegetables and toasted sandwiches fall under "cooking"... Even though they are a pretty basic form of it.

Cooking - "Prepare (food, a dish, or a meal) by mixing, combining, and heating the ingredients" Oxford Dictionary.

That raw food link is mostly smoothies or deserts - and all way more effort than grilling a cheese toastie which the lady couldn't do.

lizzieoak · 08/12/2016 14:35

It does annoy me a bit too, as people tend to sound a bit proud of not being able to cook. It's not like it's difficult to boil pasta & bung on pesto, or cook rice and fry some veg.

The expense of eating ready meals all the time is shocking.

It sounds like maybe you made her uncomfortable - but while I don't find it shocking that people don't cook, I do find it odd.

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 14:36

Wow. The mental gymnastics people go through to feel superior is really shocking.

The OP has already stated the woman could use the microwave and gave them ready meals, so clearly she does some basic microwave cooking.

He's rather beautiful, Soubriquet and most definitely the sort of cat who knows his Rights! He may need to go 'no carb' so just grilled mouse for him with maybe a delicate grass jus?

"mixing, combining, AND heating "

I think you missed the definition. It's not just about reheating some leftovers.

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 14:59

I think we'll have to agree to disagree.

You think you're right. I know you're not.

Oh well, life goes on. I can't stay as we're going out to eat. You know - providing the children with a hot healthy meal without me cooking it. Grin

A meal that you have no idea where the ingredients come from, actually you probably have no idea of what many of the ingredients actually are.

SVJAA · 08/12/2016 15:32

Hoops and Navy so go on then, since you've spent so much of this thread belittling anyone who doesn't cook from scratch every night for their poor, malnourished, neglected children, what does a weekly menu look like in your houses?

SVJAA · 08/12/2016 15:33

What do weekly menus look like, not what does weekly menus look like.

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 15:39

How many weeks do you want? I'm having to keep a bloody food diary at the moment, I can go back several months...

SVJAA · 08/12/2016 15:44

Say 2 weeks as an example then.

I hate cooking. I take no pleasure in it. None. I probably could cobble a few things together, but I don't enjoy trying or learning so I don't.

I have no kids so generally my evening meals consist of things like a) cereal b) custard c) nothing.

It isn't that surprising.

FizzBombBathTime · 08/12/2016 16:01

All that food sounds like bland bollocks

Ginger can I come out to eat with you please? 😇

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 16:01

(Havent written breakfast down for sunday).

Leftover party food from Saturday (veg sticks mainly, cheese, olives)
Dinner was casserole

Saturday

Champagne. Eggs. Toast. Avacado. Smoked Salmon.
Loads of party food which included : vegetable sticks, meat cuts, hard boiled eggs, olives, cheese etc.

Dinner: Went out for dinner - had a starter which was mussels in a wine sauce, steak for main course with veg and creme brulee for desert. And two glasses of red wine.

FizzBombBathTime · 08/12/2016 16:02

There's crisps and chocolate in the house too.

Although this has piqued my interest. As long as it's salt and vinegar and Galaxy...

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 16:05

There's crisps and chocolate in the house too.

Here too. And it is galaxy. Galaxy is getting demolished later on.

FizzBombBathTime · 08/12/2016 16:06

And two glasses of red wine.

😮

HEART DISEASE! CANCER! LIVER FAILURE!
