'I can't even cook cheese on toast'

Prepared to be told IABU.
Having coffee with a relatively new friend, I said something about making Christmas dinner, she then said that she 'couldn't even make cheese on toast'. I was visibly gobsmacked and as it turns out she really can't cook anything!
She was really offended that I was so surprised, and told me she'd always been too busy to learn. I've offered to help her with some basics but she's ignored my message and cancelled our DS's playing together Shock
To not drip feed I was really shocked, going 'what not even. ....' and questioning what her kids eat probably a bit too much.
But really, wouldn't you be shocked if a 40 year old couldn't cook anything at all?

I've never had Pimms either.

All this healthy eating and I've missed an entire food group!!!

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 17:07

Also it's good baked.

Never put it on sweet potato toast though. Actually never put anything on sweet potato toast.

SVJAA · 08/12/2016 17:08

I worked at Royal Ascot for several years preparing the fruit/mint for Pimms. If it tastes as bad as it smells you're not missing much!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/12/2016 17:09

What the actual fuck is sweet potato toast 😱😱😱 Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/12/2016 17:09

The first time I ever got drunk was on Pimms #classy Grin

TaraCarter · 08/12/2016 17:10

Avocado is good in potato salad.

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 17:10

I'm hungry for burritos. Big lovely steak burritos with everything known to man piled on them. (except pesto, of course! Not that!)

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 17:10

Livia it is actually fucking rank (in my opinion).

You slice the sweet potato long ways, and then you put it in the toast and "toast" it. Except it goes like a soggy mess and I am still to this day grateful I didn't electrocute myself. Blame pinterest for this culinary mishap adventure.

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 17:11

Livia I'm clueless. I've had sweet potato pie, sweet potato fries, and sweet potato mash. But toast? Nah.

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 17:12

You tried to toast a potato? Step away from the pinterest, you've lost all reason. Grin

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 17:13

Unless.... did they neglect to mention a toasting bag? I don't have one so couldn't say for sure, but wouldn't that hold the potato muck inside?

HoopsandEverything · 08/12/2016 17:14

Maybe it was instsagram. But yeah. I don't advise it.

Oh. Paleo. Sorry. Is that a fad diet?

I have a friend doing the paleo thing, as they want to eat healthy, but then on the weekend they get Krispy Kreme. Confused

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 17:20

In the article, they toasted the sweet potato three times, it was charred at the edges and raw in the middle. Much like the first time I tried to cook a turkey many many years ago. Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/12/2016 17:20

I'm howling about the paler/Krispy Kreme combo Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/12/2016 17:21

GrinGrinGrin The main difference is the likelihood of fatalities I would imagine Smile

Cuppaand2biscuits · 08/12/2016 17:22

I would be shocked. A lady at work in her 40's asked me how to cook chicken breasts. Turns out she only really eats stuff that comes out of a tin because it's cheap.
Another lady I'm her 40's I know doesn't have an oven because she only uses microwave.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/12/2016 17:22

We have moved on to the delights of seeet potato toast now Grin

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 17:24

And gin. Grin

ProfessorBranestawm · 08/12/2016 17:34

It always amazes me when people literally can't cook anything but I manage to hide my shock and judginess

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 17:36

yes, but can you toast sweet potatoes successfully? Grin

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 08/12/2016 17:37

Ginger Apparently quinine was derived from tree bark so if you have tonic in your gin, that probably counts as a vegetable.... Grin

GingerIvy · 08/12/2016 17:40

I did not know that. I really must try gin and tonic now.

SVJAA · 08/12/2016 17:43

I'm off to buy an avocado and some lemon juice. Been on MN a while, feel it's my duty to try avocado 😁 The mind absolutely boggles at sweet potato toast though. 😂 Ooh a burrito sounds good Ginger will you be adding guacamole? 😁 Wine comes from grapes, does that mean it counts as one of my 5 a day? Or all 5? 😁
