Builder nicked my candle!

maiacam · 06/12/2016 13:50

Hi I had a limited edition Jo Malone candle in my downstairs loo that had never been used and has been treasured since 2009.
We have builders working in the garden this week and have come in to use loo twice yesterday.
Noticed candle has disappeared and it was 100 percent there yesterday. Both builders are acting normal and friendly.
AIBU to feel rather miffed. Haven't said anything DH wants to but I am not so sure.

Help!

It only happened yesterday so not a repost.
Maybe it happens a lot !
I know there is much more going than to be thinking about a candle and it isn't all I have to think about unfortanately
But it was there and now its gone
I will never forget you Jo Malone Limited Edition Farrow and Ball Breakfast Room Green Candle

I wonder if that poster about six months ago ever found her Ipad, the one that went missing after the plumber had been, never to be seen again.

Gottagetmoving · 06/12/2016 14:48

Seriously,...ask them! It is not accusing..They may have moved it or be able to tell you where it is. Your house,..your candle, so ask.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 14:52

There is nowhere to have moved it the loo has a sink and a WC and a shelf with nothing else on it only a once empty spot where my candle once resided

I'm so glad it isn't just me with deja vu. Even some of the responses sound familiar Confused

loobyloo1234 · 06/12/2016 14:53

glueandstick · 06/12/2016 14:55

DearMrDilkington · 06/12/2016 14:56

maiacam · 06/12/2016 14:57

You looked on ebay, OP?! I was JOKING! Grin

maiacam · 06/12/2016 14:59

Ha I only looked to see if there were any the same not that they had listed it already!

Deux · 06/12/2016 14:59

OK, well it can't just have vanished. I think it would still have fragrance after that length of time and if it had smashed on the floor you might have noticed a stronger fragrance in the room. Do you have a skip? Check it?

So someone's either moved it or nicked it.

I'd be inclined to ask a direct question - what have you done with my candle that was in the loo? Or - come, on stop messing me about, who's moved my candle? That kind of thing.

And of course a builder might know the value of a Jo Malone candle if they have a DP who's asked for one or wished for one when passing a shop display.

Gottagetmoving · 06/12/2016 15:01

But I will go red and stutter

Just ask 'Have you moved my candle while you have been working?...It has disappeared'

maiacam · 06/12/2016 15:02

Yes we do have a skip I will check when they go

SirChenjin · 06/12/2016 15:02

It's in their van - I bet you any money it's in there right now, and it's lit any time they're in it to take away the smell of stale sweat and oil. They've been reading too many articles on hygge in their tea break, you mark my words.

magicstar1 · 06/12/2016 15:02

I'd have to ask them about it OP. See what their reactions are.

I have a candle I bought in America in 2001, and it's never been lit...still smells lovely though.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 15:03

Have you moved my candle while you are working won't work- they are building a wall outside!

OP posts:
maiacam · 06/12/2016 15:05

ah Sirchenjin maybe I have a sheepskin rug nearby too will have to keep a close eye on that this damned hygge is nothing sacred

PabloEscobarReallyLovesHisKids · 06/12/2016 15:07

I reckon the builders ate it.
They are always hungry.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 15:09

Its just a mystery maybe we have a poltergeist I do have a teenage daughter don't they attract them

OP posts:
AVirginLitTheCandle · 06/12/2016 15:10

So have you had the candle for seven years or nine years?

You don't seem to be able to make your mind up...

unlucky83 · 06/12/2016 15:11

My theory - candles can be used in bathrooms instead of air freshener.
One builder stunk your loo out, saw the candle and lit it -thinking that was what it was there for - otherwise why else would you have a candle in your loo?
Then either they realised it was a super posh candle - or the other builder said something about it. First builder panics and disposes of it -after all pretty embarrassing to admit why he lit it ...
You never smelt it because the scent had faded with age and the extractor worked.
Case closed...

maiacam · 06/12/2016 15:12

It was 2009 so 7 years it was a farrow and ball collaboration candle

OP posts:
Gottagetmoving · 06/12/2016 15:13

OK, so you think they may have stolen your candle but you think it will be embarrassing to ask if they have moved it?
It is perfectly reasonable if you are sure no one in your home has moved it, to ask anyone else who has had access to it.
I doubt they will be so sensitive they will be offended or affronted by you trying to find your candle.
I would have said 'hey, Have you any idea where my candle is?'

DodoRevival · 06/12/2016 15:13

Probably the same builder; the last candle (from the previous thread) has most likely run out. I say he needed another lovely scented candle for his long candlelit soak in the bath. OP have you checked your stock of bath oils (if you have them)?
