Builder nicked my candle!

Hi I had a limited edition Jo Malone candle in my downstairs loo that had never been used and has been treasured since 2009.
We have builders working in the garden this week and have come in to use loo twice yesterday.
Noticed candle has disappeared and it was 100 percent there yesterday. Both builders are acting normal and friendly.
AIBU to feel rather miffed. Haven't said anything DH wants to but I am not so sure.

Help!

I'm not going crazy am I, this is a really old thread right. Or it's almost identical to an old thread or (and I am hoping it's this) my ultimate fantasy of being able to go backwards in time has occurred and I can fix all the silly things I've done since the summer!

Sorry about the candle op. I no longer keep anything for "best" for reasons like this.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 14:29

Having read this thread I think most likely scenario is

it was too near ledge
they accidentally knocked it off
had no idea that it was the only candle I own or that I paid 42 quid for it in 2009
hoping I don't notice
probably feeling awkward too
It would not be a good present as it was slightly dusty

Don't accuse them of stealing just say "hey guys, have you moved the candle that was in the bathroom? I can put it somewhere else if it is in your way" then if they look a bit shifty say "of course, it's alright if you broke it, just tell me so I don't bollock the kids" . It does not need to be a big conversation. Deep breath now.

Gottagetmoving · 06/12/2016 14:30

Of course,..asking them if they know what has happened to your candle could help....and it is an easy way to solve the mystery.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 14:31

no its not an old thread only happened yesterday.
Its normal size candle could be concealed somewhere I guess

After nine years it wouldn't have had any scent left anyway, OP.

twofingerstoGideon · 06/12/2016 14:31

Have you looked on ebay, OP? I bet those bastard builders have sold it!

hungryhippo90 · 06/12/2016 14:34

Most of the men I know are trades of some sort. I'm sat laughing in the car at the thought of any of them even knowing what a jo malone candle was, even more so at the thought of them stealing one...

They're also paid alright wages, most could buy their own blinking Jo Malone Candles if they wanted.... I'd be more concerned about them going through my knicker draw, or biccie cupboard if I were you!

danTDM · 06/12/2016 14:34

I don't see what's odd about the OP not using the candle at all.

I think absolutely someone stole it for his girlfriend or wife who is constantly talking about high end stuff she likes. Deffo. Like I go on about Jo Malone and Molton Brown to my DH and DD. Who look like this Hmm

I feel for you OP as you say they have a week left.

Someone stole it, it's only 2 weeks till Christmas FFS.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 14:34

i looked on Ebay not on there
there is one going limited edition with asking price of 169!
I should have sold the wretched thing

I swear these threads are some form of marketing. They pop up every few months and although the thief changes, it's always a Jo Malone candle. I bet there's an increase in their website hits...

TheFlyingFauxPas · 06/12/2016 14:34

I hate these Mumsnet mysteries. I remember years ago someone thought a plumber (I think) had taken the sd card out of her camera. Never did find out that one...

shovetheholly · 06/12/2016 14:34

A builder once hid two mugs in my garden because they'd got broken and they were too embarrassed to fess up. I think it's far more likely that they broke it than that they nicked it.

The scent on them dies really quickly, and then goes bad. So chances are if you'd burned it, it would have smelled right 'orrible anyway. I think most candles are best burned fairly fresh.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 14:35

No they won't be going through anything else as I left the key in the back door yesterday
I removed it today so they are knocking to come in and I am hovering around now and they havent been upstairs
I am not sure they would want anything from my Knicker draw ha

Did it still smell after 7 years? Think I'd be inclined to write it off and put a new one on my Christmas list!

maiacam · 06/12/2016 14:36

Do you think if this gets them more hits Jo Malone would send me a new one

Deja vu! Only read OP, but this thread seems really familiar. Maybe I'm going mad.

Gottagetmoving · 06/12/2016 14:41

Sniff their pockets...The smell would have lingered?

It's not unusual to keep candles and not light them.
We have candles in our house that are pretty that i haven't wanted to light, and a lot of family doesn't light the candles.
Still makes the room smell nice.
If i'd paid that much money for a candle i don't know if i'd be able to light it either!
