Builder nicked my candle!

maiacam · 06/12/2016 13:50

Hi I had a limited edition Jo Malone candle in my downstairs loo that had never been used and has been treasured since 2009.
We have builders working in the garden this week and have come in to use loo twice yesterday.
Noticed candle has disappeared and it was 100 percent there yesterday. Both builders are acting normal and friendly.
AIBU to feel rather miffed. Haven't said anything DH wants to but I am not so sure.

Help!

Maybe they are courting and plan to have a candlelit dinner in the back of the van later?

SirChenjin · 06/12/2016 19:58

GrinGrinSupper!

maiacam · 06/12/2016 20:00

That is truly excellent supper I think I might frame it and put it in the empty space where my candle once sat

You're a fucking legend Xmas Grin

You have every right to ask if they have seen it.
It's your house / your candle.
Don't make excuses for them/blame the children/apologize.
Just be straight.
'Have you seen the candle from the Loo?'
Then let them speak.
For they took it, let them feel bad, not you.
If they didn't, they won't mind being asked.

It is perfectly reasonable to ask.

FriendofBill · 06/12/2016 20:20

*if they took it
(Autocorrect fail)

Movingonuppppp · 06/12/2016 20:38

Put a dildo in place of the candle and see what they make of that!

LadyOfTheCanyon · 06/12/2016 22:41

If no-one has managed to break the candle in all the years you've had it, what would the builders have been doing to break it?
"they must've broken it" - people usually just have a pee or a poo and then wash their hands- they don't flail around as if possessed by devils.
They've nicked it. And they'll deny it. So it's gone either way.

QueenMortificado · 06/12/2016 22:45

Not me. I like to do an interpretive dance to explain what's just happened in the loo.

Maybe the builder did this and in his flailing he knocked it off?

maiacam · 06/12/2016 22:53

I took my sisters expensive watch to my house while she had workmen in. As I had taken a few things we left the boxes in her house, I took them for safe keeping. The empty box was taken from her house, they obviously thought the watch was in the box. It does happen although everyone will deny it. We had a decorator pinched a portable radiator from the house.

bigredfireengine · 06/12/2016 23:10

I haven't read the whole thread but this is a rehashing or a previous thread? Or a copycat? We have had a candle nicked by a builder before.

WhisperingLoudly · 06/12/2016 23:15

bigred yes we have!!

Also not rtt - I just scrolled down as convinced MN must have gremlins as this old thread was showing in active and as if written today.

Suppermummy02 · 06/12/2016 23:18

So its not just me then, I do my best moves after a pee in the bowl.

blankpieceofpaper · 06/12/2016 23:31

I will light a candle ,,, in memory of your candle.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 23:32

Fire engine this is not a rehash or copy cat - who would want to copy a story about a disappearing candle!!

OP posts:
WouldHave · 06/12/2016 23:32

Why don't you just ask them if they've had an accident with the candle? That way it wouldn't be confrontational.

maiacam · 06/12/2016 23:35

Thanks blank piece of paper!
Me and my dh have been discussing but whether an accident or not we think they are probably going to deny it. We have had different tradesmen in the house all through the summer even when we went on holiday and nothing has gone missing so it's just bizarre.

Before they come back fit secret cameras everywhere then shame them on crime watch ..... "police today are looking for theiving builders who stole a seven year old candle from a house renovation"..... cut to actors re inacting theft......

maiacam · 06/12/2016 23:41

needs the scooby doo gang to solve this one

OP posts:
Patriciathestripper1 · 06/12/2016 23:43

Or columbo?

maiacam · 06/12/2016 23:45

Yes columbo - just one more thing!

I think one of them has nicked it as a Christmas present for wife / girlfriend.

It's really saddening when you trust someone in your house and they steal. I've had a builder steal from me (actually saw him pocketing stuff), and a decorator stole money from the house. To put it in context though, we've had various people do work in the house over the years, and the vast majority have been completely honest, which restores faith in humanity somewhat.

OP - when you say they are building an outside wall - you're not the poster with the gatepost and entitled neighbours / mystery delivery van driver poster, are you?

maiacam · 07/12/2016 00:10

No I'm not the gatepost poster.
I know in the grand scheme of things a candle is meaningless it's just the one minute it was there the next it wasn't I don't think there's much more to be said but will update if it reappears tomorrow when they come back or if I discover I have subconsciously hidden it in my sock drawer!
