To think blue lights are NOT Christmassy (light-hearted)

I have an irrational and completely unreasonable hatred of blue Christmas lights.

They look HORRIBLE! So cold, and so artificial. They remind me of being in an industrial freezer. Where there is possibly half a dead cow and a rampant serial killer.

Why would someone do this? WHY WHY WHY? Grin

I hate blue lights the most, followed by very cold white ones, then green, red & finally multicoloured.

I only like yellowy-white ones & they are not allowed to move, unless it's a slow fade in / out thing.

Xmas Grin
Elphame · 07/12/2016 17:33

I don't like the blue ones either -nor those cold harsh icy white ones. I bought a string this year by mistake and they look horrible.

Bogeyface · 07/12/2016 17:49

Blue is not a Xmassy colour.

On our tree we only have sightly off white lights, not those harsh ice white ones, gold and red baubles and a gold star. Thats it. No tinsel, tinsel is vile and ugly and naff, not icicles, nothing.

You know that Friends episode where they all decorate the tree and then Monica turns it round to her perfectly decorated side? I let the kids decorate the tree, then when they have gone to bed I take it all off and do it again Blush

I know, I know but I am not anal about anything else, I promise!

PatMullins · 07/12/2016 17:50

Oh good, Cauliflower I am not alone Xmas Grin

Bogeyface · 07/12/2016 17:50

Oh and I agree that multicoloured ones are almost as nasty, my mums set has some purple in it ffs! And we only have the slow fade setting too :o

throwingpebbles · 07/12/2016 18:14

I love all Christmas lights, and feel really grateful to everyone who puts them up, whether small and dull or large and gaudy . It brightens up the coldest and darkest parts of the year and one of the lovely "free" bits of Christmas is walking round the village looking at everyone's lights

However, when (now ex) H came home proudly carrying some very very blue Christmas lights I had to force a smile.

Funnyfarmer · 07/12/2016 18:34

I've got bright white lights this year. Usually have warm white but I find them a little bit dull. Love my bright white ones. They look like little twinkling stars

Squiff85 · 07/12/2016 18:52

I agree! They're awful

TTmonte · 07/12/2016 19:57

I'll tell you why....... while you are sitting by the chestnuts roasting on an open fire, with your white Christmas and snowmen down in the Southern Hemisphere we are here sweating out bits off! We will be sitting on a beach in 40 degrees building sand castles and eating cold turkey, ham and prawns with salad. Our decorations are not red and green representing warm fires and lush forestry ours are blue white and silver representing sky, sand and shimmering ripples in the ocean. It amazes me that the northern hemisphere think they have the hold on what Christmas should be. If you actually read the story of Jesus's birth you would know he was born in the summer months in a land covered in date trees and desert not conifers and snow.

heateallthebuns · 07/12/2016 20:22

They're going out of fashion anyway. Christmas tree foliage and warm white all the way now.
I think multi coloured are coming back in too.

Magicpaintbrush · 07/12/2016 20:52

I agree OP, blue crimbo lights look too 'electricky' and not Christmassy. Either white lights or multicoloured lights are best....

HOWEVER...... multicoloured lights which have orange and pink instead of red and yellow really wind me up as well. The colour balance looks completely off!!! I hate hate hate this!

SoupDragon · 07/12/2016 21:43

As a result of my extensive research driving round the neighbourhood, by far the ugliest lights are the yellowy white ones.

3luckystars · 07/12/2016 21:58

Yeah but ttmonte, there were definitely no blue lights at the stable in Bethlehem. There was a star and maybe candles but no livid blue lights.

nicholab85 · 07/12/2016 21:59

I read the title on Facebook as blue TIGHTS so clicked to read about other people hate of blue tights as my friend wears them and I think they're hideous...she now wears them when she meets me on purpose ffs. Literally got to about comment number 10 thinking wtf have Christmas tree lights got to do with tacky blue tights?!?!

Summerwood1 · 07/12/2016 22:16

Hate blue lights. I keep thinking the emergency services are around when I see them flashing!

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 07/12/2016 22:20

Yanbu

It's wrong everyone knows that fact some people prefer to ignore it

Wookiecookies · 07/12/2016 23:26

soup I am enjoying your commitment to researching this phenomena! 😂

chipmonkey · 08/12/2016 01:12

I normally hate them with one exception. Every year on my way down to my Mum's, I see a single tree decorated only in blue light. For some reason, that one looks magical.

SoupDragon · 08/12/2016 07:02

To be fair, the only effort my research takes is driving round the road at the back of my house which has every colour of light known to mankind :o

ProgRockAndPinot · 08/12/2016 09:17

Every single fairy light in my house is warm white (or even amber). Cannot stand icy white, let alone blue lights! Too cold.. Xmas is all about candles and cosyness, warm toes and 'occasional' chocolate. There also has to be an endless supply of mulled wine! You see, red and earthy colours accented with luxurious gold (wrappers from chocolate for example).

3luckystars · 08/12/2016 10:15

Chip monkey, I know it's a big ask but any chance you could get a photo of the magic tree sometime? I would love to see it. Obviously don't wake the people up or get yourself in trouble on here.

My friend used to live in an estate where one neighbour had millions of lights outside, reindeers, a full life size lit up crib, santa on a ladder, the whole house was alight, my friend said you could see it from the moon. the house used to get on the news and people came from everywhere to see the lights. I often wondered about his neighbours because it was a really nice place to live and the whole of December was taken over by this fella and his lights.

The house over the road from me has blue flashing lights on their gutters and leave them on ALL night! Que me waking up several times a night panicking there's emergency services outside my house. They are horrid In my opinion, only warm white ones aloud in my house and no flashing lights either

ScrambledSmegs · 08/12/2016 13:59

A neighbour has the most bizarre turquoise-with-a hint-of-brown lights on a tiny ground-spreading bush outside their house. I've never seen that colour before, let alone illuminated. I can only assume that they're really dirty. Its not the most christmassy look however I can't get that worked up about it. At least they've made an effort.

My parent's road is full of such paragons of tastefulness Hmm that no one except parents and their one neighbour put lights up anymore.
