Call me by my bloody name!

Aibu

My name is Alexandra. (I'm happy to say that here as I don't post personal stuff). Not Alex. I sign my emails Alexandra. I introduce myself as Alexandra.

so why t' feck am I always called Alex? In response to emails I have clearly signed with my legal, preferred name??! why do people shorten without asking?! I wouldn't, it's rude.

Gahhhhhhhhhhh.

AIBU to want people to call me my actual bloody name?

YANBU!

I would never presume to shorten someone's name (or to lengthen it e.g. if Someone introduced themselves as Becky, that's what I'd call her - not Rebecca).

I think it's very bad-mannered to re-name people, or to assume an intimacy that isn't there,

'm pretty fortunate i some ways - although my name is Not A Nice One, it is one that is almost impossible to shorten. People have to be really, really determined, and the shortened version sounds so contrived that I don't sound remotely snotty putting them right.

Eolian · 02/12/2016 19:00

Totally YANBU OP. I share a name with someone upthread. It's a name that can be male or female but the shortened version is more used for men and sounds a bit like a burly builder's name. I'm not that keen on the full name but I would HATE it if people called me by the shortened version.

burgundyandgoldleaves · 02/12/2016 19:00

YANBU.

I love Alexandra and Katherine but couldn't call my daughter the latter as I can't bear Kath.

Astro55 · 02/12/2016 19:00

Another stabby one here! I hate my shortened name - it's only family and close friends are answered too - otherwise it's too personal -

It's my name - the only thing o truly own and it's not yours to decide what to call me

FlappysMammyAndPopeInExile · 02/12/2016 19:01

I've known two Alexandras. One got Sandy, the other got Allie.

I like Alexandra.

nokidshere · 02/12/2016 19:05

My name is very short, it cannot be shortened - so people lengthen it instead! Weird

harderandharder2breathe · 02/12/2016 19:09

My parents deliberately gave me a name that they considered impossible to shorten. At work I'm often called by the first two letters which make a nasel sound. It's not even a nickname! May be regional because everyone is shortened, e.g. Ian becomes E

buttercup54321 · 02/12/2016 19:13

My friends DH is Ian and her Ds is James. People call them Ee and Jamesey. Irritating!

Ilovetorrentialrain · 02/12/2016 19:16

Hi OP you're well within your rights to hate that - it's a problem too I imagine with knowing how to word a response / put people right without getting the tone 'wrong' (not that this should matter!) especially at work.

My name is not one with a commonly-used short version and I never use one myself but very, very occasionally someone will call me by a short version and I love it - I beleive I'm someone who takes a while to warm up to re friendships etc and I take it as a compliment.

By the way I love the name Alexandra - lucky you!

Sara107 · 02/12/2016 19:16

I gave my little girl a name that doesn't have a short form. And I've noticed that some people just chop it in half and use the first syllable! Horrible.

MamOfTwo · 02/12/2016 19:16

I had a boss once who shortened everybody's name. I have a name that cannot be shortened. This irritated him and I think it is why we never bonded!

Sneakynamechage · 02/12/2016 19:30

See I associate my full name with being told off, because the only time I'd hear it, when younger was if I was trouble. So often go by the shorter version of my name. Although I detest how creative my father got when registering me. He took an easily enough spelt name and butchered it. I think me using the shorter version also saved time on trying to correct how people pronounced it. (they'd pronounce it beth-annie. Not Bethany)
Bethany is the traditional way.
Bethannie is my fathers way
Beth is my way Xmas Wink

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 02/12/2016 19:30

This bothers me too. I'm Jenny, everybody at work calls me this as that's how I introduce myself. I have one colleague (who I detest) who calls me 'Jen'. I hate it but because I don't like him, I can't think of a direct but polite way to stop him.

Family, friends and lovers can call me 'Jen' and that's it, nobody else.

Belleblush · 02/12/2016 19:32

Call me Belle. I'm not precious 😂

roarityroar · 02/12/2016 19:35

I'm super lucky with my surname too. It's really quite lovely. I'm never changing it.

Thank you so much for not thinking IABU. VINDICATION!!

I feel your pain. I'm Victoria. (No idea what my parents were thinking of, because they HATE Vicki.... which is obviously what most people shorten it to! Although strangely, they don't seem to object to Vic, which is just as well I guess!)
I've got used to it tbh, but I did think it a bit rude when I'd introduce myself, and they'd reply "Oh, Hi Vicki, I'm X"...

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 02/12/2016 19:49

I'm with you. The shortened form of my name is really quite awful and I have had to beg people not to use it. Thankfully my nephew re-christened me as a toddler because he couldn't pronounce my name. His version has become my new nickname among close family and I actually prefer it!

It bothers me when people shorten DD's name, too. It's a short name to begin with. How much effort is it, really, to pronounce both syllables?

Meluzyna · 02/12/2016 19:52

My parents always used my full name, which meant that when i was a child so did everyone else. Think Samantha.
When I left home and started work I introduced myself as Sam and that's what everyone - including my parents - now calls me.
Apart from a few irritating individuals who for no reason I can fathom take it upon themselves to call me "Sammie": just fuck off, will you - if Sam is not long enough for you, then call me Samantha.
I feel your pain Alexandra - you have a lovely name.

Katy07 · 02/12/2016 19:55

People call me Kat - drives me up the wall. Angry

poochiepants · 02/12/2016 20:04

I really like my christened name - it's Kate. And I have the opposite problem, I get called Katherine......they possibly think they're really clever by knowing what Kate is (usually) short for......

Sprink · 02/12/2016 20:10

I only use the short version for close friends and family, my long name is for being posh and profesh at work.

Can't believe that on a thread about how annoying it is to have one's name shortened, no one mentioned the use of "profesh" in Susan's post.

Belleblush · 02/12/2016 20:37

I think people do it to be friendly/accepting?

useyourimagination · 02/12/2016 20:55

I have it the other way round. Say my name were Alexandra, I prefer to be called Alex. However, on my work email it's Alexandra and even though I sign off Alex and my signature on my email is Alex, I still get called Alexandra and it's too late now to change my email address.

FlappysMammyAndPopeInExile · 02/12/2016 20:55

One of the Victoria's I knew got "Tori".

I didn't like that at all.

MissVictoria · 02/12/2016 21:01

I'm with you on people should reply with the same name you sign. My name is Kathryn, but i don't like it because of the spelling. Katherine i'd love, but people pronounce it so different, really harshly, and i really hate it.
I go by Katie, but so many people call me Kathy (some even spell it Cathy!) and i absolutely despise being called Kathy. Same i hate being called Kath. I do also like Kate, but i've told people for over 15 years my name is Katie, yet so few use it. I understand legal documents when i have to use Kathryn, but anything informal is always Katie.
