AIBU to think it's silly that DS can't wear these to nursery?

DS had some leggings on today - they're gorgeous! They have monsters on (not scary) but apparently he isn't allowed to wear them? They don't have a uniform, but apparently a Mum said that they scared her daughter Confused WTAF.

Wow. This thread degenerated fast!

In my opinion

  • the leggings aren't scary
  • boys can and do wear leggings
  • Bippity did a nice thing by telling her friend people were praising her leggings on mumsnet and anyone would do the same
  • the leggings maker didn't mean to break any rules when she offered a discount
  • everyone needs to assume good faith and chill out a bit

So as a boy...my ds shouldn't be wearing these?

Hehe, i don't think that's how Mumsnet works 😂

CyanKitty · 29/11/2016 22:07

the leggings do not look ridiculous! They are wonderful, I wish they had been available when my boy was a toddler. The little girl in question should be talked to carefully by her parents and make her understand that leggings are just clothing and nothing to be afraid of. Banning them from nursery won't help her.

NoUseNumber27 · 29/11/2016 22:08

YANBU. Leggings are gorgeous, my ds wears rainbow ones. Gender binaries are a load of crap!

TheGruffaloMother · 29/11/2016 22:11

I was just trying to stay polite and not offend anyone by saying what I really think, and couldn't come up with a better and neutral word than clown

Quite easy to gather the essence of your opinion from this reply. Let's face it, offending people doesn't really seem to be a problem for you. You've said they look ridiculous and clown like. If that's your 'neutral' then I can only imagine saying what you actually mean would break talk guidelines and possibly earn you a ban.

No point labouring this further really. You don't even have the conviction to not mask your unpalatable opinions.

GracyEvans · 29/11/2016 22:11

Soub! Those are lovely.

Leggings are just gorgeous on little boys

Soubriquet · 29/11/2016 22:18

Oh I love that outfit too Gracy

dontpresume · 29/11/2016 22:19

I don't think this has anything to do though with boys wearing leggings...?

It was about a child being frightened?

MLGs · 29/11/2016 22:21

I didn't think they were frightening.

There's no problem with boys wearing leggings at all, but aren't leggings a bit cold for this weather?

PhilODox · 29/11/2016 22:22

Oh dear- that poor rabbit has been well loved, hasn't it? Grin

It's not about what we find frightening. It's about what a small child might find frightening.

Agree with Hazeyjane.

SassyPants19 · 29/11/2016 22:28

Oh dear god, tell the bloody nursery staff to get a grip!!!! Put your son in his funky leggings and make them deal with the high maintenance mother!!!!

SassyPants19 · 29/11/2016 22:29

My son wears loads of Blade & Rose leggings - he's only 9months but I love them!

HardcoreLadyType · 29/11/2016 22:30

I want those monster leggings for me!

MommaGee · 29/11/2016 22:37

southofmaui are you my sister? She's also ridiculous on the subject of boys in leggings

Did nursery actually tell you he can't OP? Girl is definitely overly precious and they should be teaching her it's just a print not something live

GreatFuckability · 29/11/2016 22:39

As a child i was terrified of buttons. I remember to this day the panic and fear they induced in me. It was very very real, and whilst everyone told me there was nothing to be afraid of, the whole point of irrational fears is that they are not something you can rationalise yourself out of. I don't know to this day why they freaked me out so badly, but there it is. I'm fine now.
So, the mother/nursery may or may not be over reacting and being silly, but there is a possibility that not wearing them would make a small child's life easier with a simple request that doesn't harm or hinder you. I know what I'd do.

dontpresume · 29/11/2016 22:47

Small amount of compassion goes a long way.

Again, the attitudes some people hold in 2016 are astonishing. Just be nice!

MommaGee · 29/11/2016 22:51

soub I need those leggings in my sons life!! Where did you get them from and please tell me they're not like £20.

MommaGee · 29/11/2016 22:52

And the other day DS went out in boy tights and short dungarees so you could see the boy tights. Looked adorable at 17 months

SouthofMaui · 29/11/2016 22:55

Soubriquet

frankly, they look more like joggers than leggings. By leggings I mean more things like this, and they are worn by a baby on this pic.
I wouldn't send my kid to school in leggings or pjs, what's wrong with trousers? I don't understand why people think they have to be uncomfortable, they are designed for babies.
