I took my dd to the doctors today about her eye it's a long story but I wrote a post on here I can't figure out how to get a link on my phone but I posted a picture (see below)

Anyway I saw my gp and he immediately dismissed it as conjunctivitis and nothing needed to be done which is fine but he was so condescending he started asking me who helped me at home and did I have help with the kids implying that I was wrong to bring her In.

I actually feel quite upset now!

Aibu there was no need for the speech about having help was there?

I shouldn't be made to feel foolish for getting it checked ?

I would have taken her in! Her eye looks very sore! You did right.

Of course you should have taken her in, but perhaps he was worried that you needed additional support at home so asked some standard questions to find out more about your situation?

Navy I went to the walk in first they told me I had to take her to the gp.

It may be standard practice to ask mums those questions at that practice. I went for a pill check at the local GUM clinic recently and was asked, very nicely and supportively, whether I ever felt scared of DH or experienced violence from him. I suspect they're just trying to give people who are struggling an opportunity to speak up. Some people just have a really unfortunate manner and can't help sounding condescending when trying to be nice...

Yanbu, are you bfeeding? Only breast milk is fab for sticky eyes, just treated my own conjunctivitis with my own milk.

And a pharmacy won't treat under twos, they will have just said to see gp as well.

This is the main reason why I never took my daughter to the doctors many years ago about her eye they make you feel so rubbish. My daughter ended up in hospital for 3 nights with orbital cellulitis (not sure on spelling).

I did tell him - or tried to while he was going on about how "we end up treating nurseries not eyes" apparently they have to give prescriptions for conjunctivitis just so kids can go back to nursery quicker - I am a sahm she has never been to nursery

The walk in didn't say anything apart from it could be an infection in her eyelid go to the gp.

You couldn't take her to the pharmacist though as they won't treat under 2s.

Are you breastfeeding btw? A quick squirted of milk would sort her out.

GP always asked me how I was getting on at home when DD was a baby until one day I crumbled and told her that DD wasn't really mine, that she had been replaced but I didn't know why but that I knew not to cross the road because someone was planning to run us over.

Turns out I had puerperal psychosis. Which would have got a whole lot worse had she not asked those (probably routine) questions.

Maybe they're told it's best practice to ask, maybe you seemed anxious, maybe I seemed "not right" that day.

Try to consider that their intentions were good.

I wouldn't have hesitated taking her to the GP and I'm a registered nurse. No way would I rely on a pharmacists opinion! Your GP should have been reassuring rather than making you feel foolish. I'd be looking for another family doctor. I hope your dd gets better soon.

He's enquired as to whether you have any help at home and you've taken that to mean he thinks you've wasted his time?

Perhaps you seemed a bit strung out and he was genuinely concerned about you?

I would have taken a baby in with an eye looking like that but I agree that those might be standard questions to ask newish mums to give them a chance to say they need help, or things are bad at home, or they feel overly anxious.

Zoflo it's hard to describe but It was more the way he was asking rather than the actual words of that makes sense!

It's good practice for a GP to ask how Mothers are managing at home and if they have help.

It's not something to take personally and I don't think he/she made you out to be a fool at all.

I called our practice today because DD3 has been coughing for days and her throat is inflamed and has puss at the back. Apparently that didn't warrant an appointment either, well not until 17th December anyway. But obviously doctors are always right eh Navy?
