To not understand how anyone would go to Dubai

A woman reports being raped, and is promptly arrested for having non-marital sex. And this isn't the first time. How can anyone choose to go to such a savage, uncivilised place?

Well thank god I don't live in your narrow minded small perception of the big wild world outside your perfect little English home back doorstep, people. Travel a little, and see the world for what it is. Not perfect, not a democracy and not living in harmony. But keep preaching to the comverted if that what makes you happy

maybe we have travelled and decided it was shit on that basis - also I am no fan of this country either - It has it's beauty but also it's dives - you take notice of what you see hopefully and judge on that - I've never been one for the tour bus experience.

IvorHughJarrs · 17/11/2016 19:38

There is a GoFundMe page to help the young woman's family pay for her defence if anybody is interested here

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:41

And if we are talking about theocracy, in all honesty, how long in the UK has the Royal family not been treated as God like? 50 years tops? In a civilization that claims to be from thousands of years old. In an age of democracy, free speech and all the UK seems to be going backwards, not forwards.

Patriciathestripper1 · 17/11/2016 19:43

You want to try living in Manchester........

MsJudgemental · 17/11/2016 19:43

I wouldn't go anywhere where I'd have to cover my hair or body, or not be allowed to drive- never mind the rest.

Laughingcamel · 17/11/2016 19:45

You have the wrong country! That's not UAE.

BannedexPIPassessor · 17/11/2016 19:47

Ok, once more, and only because you don't know what 'theocracy' means.

QuintessentialShadow · 17/11/2016 19:48

Well, I dont think we can really defend the Western Expansion in the US, atrocities happened to the natives at the hands of British and Spanish (and other European) invaders during the "immigration". Manifest Destiny? Gods Promised land? The only consolation is that it was 200 years ago. I hope we know better now?

We are not talking about taking a time machine and taking a holiday in the US in the 1800s, but about sharia laws perpetuating the legal system of gulf states today, making life dangerous for women, or people of other religions who can be taken to "court" on blasphemy charges.

A Norwegian hairdresser was treated to a weekend trip to Dubai, by a man from Dubai she was dating, she was then raped by him, and whereas he could fly back to Norway (where he lived) free as a bird, she remained in prison on adultery charges.

I would not visit Dubai, or any gulf state, or country where women are so unequal. I would not went to spend MY money there and support these regimes.

Yanbu.

I have lived in the UAE for 40 years. I teach. Not in a lovely Brit expat school, but Emiratis. 18 year olds. I have never lived in a compound in my whole life. I see the country for what it is. I do not in any way, shape or form think that it is perfect. I see a 45 year old country building itself out of the sand that it was when I first came here. It has a lot of learning, and catching up to do. It isn't there yet in any way, shape or form. It's not my home. Never will be. And I will never have rights here I agree. But I know more than fucking most people on here that care to comment.

Polarbearflavour · 17/11/2016 19:49

I have friends who work as cabin crew for Emirates and they love it there.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:51

A form of government in which God (or a deity) is recognized as the king or immediate ruler, and his laws are taken as the statute-book of the kingdom, these laws being usually administered by a priestly order as his ministers and agents; hence (loosely) a system of government by a sacerdotal order, claiming a divine commission; also, a state so governed.[1][2]

Shakespeare?????

Thefitfatty · 17/11/2016 19:52

I've reported an attempted rape in Qatar. There were some awkward questions, but given the language barrier it made sense. They took it seriously and there was a police car parked in that lot from that moment on. Similar attitude in the police I've met in the UAE. They are suspicious and culturally a little behind, but they do not take rape or accusations of lightly.
I talked to my friends in Canada about a guy who actually did violently rape me and was told I was drunk and stupid and it was my fault.
I love the ME because, while things aren't perfect, they are trying. You can't change hearts minds or laws overnight but generally I feel as safe here as I did in Canada. Given how backwards the uk and USA are going, I figure we are better off here.

StrawberryLime · 17/11/2016 19:52

I will never have rights here I agree

That's the whole thing that stops me wanting to visit. I'm sure it's a beautiful place. While they don't see women as people in their own right though I can't understand how anyone would willingly want to live somewhere they are either overtly or covertly despised.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:53

Christ. I think you're confusing me with stupid Bannadex!

ItsJustaUsername · 17/11/2016 19:59

Yeah coz having a monarchy is just like having laws where floggings and stonings are common punishments Hmm

Bitofacow · 17/11/2016 20:01

Veiledsetiments you live there and know what you experience. The Amnesty International site explores areas and issues that might not be visible. Being in the middle of something does not always give the best perspective.

However, you must agree the treatment of migrant workers is shameful?

BannedexPIPassessor · 17/11/2016 20:03

We live under the heel of the Windsor jackboot in this country. It's hell living in a liberal democracy with a constitutional monarchy.

Bedsheets4knickers · 17/11/2016 20:04

I often wonder this . The conditions that so many hotel/bar/restaurant live in is disgraceful . Yet they all turn up to work looking clean and smartly dressed . . People think they are ok but they are not . Can't say il be going anytime soon x

ChardonnayKnickertonSmythe · 17/11/2016 20:06

I don't understand why it's so popular with tourists.
All it is a shopping mall with some hotels and hidden slavery attached.

That poor woman in the news today.

Quintessing · 17/11/2016 20:07

Confused at thinking Shakespeare provide accurate information about what life in Britain is like today! Sure you have access to accurate news sources?

Wonder what veiled is teaching ....

My friend was teaching in China for two years, she said it was like living in a bubble, or vacuum, always wondering what is happening, both outside the borders and inside. I wonder what 45 years of that would have done to her...

QuintessentialShadow · 17/11/2016 20:09

Sorry, Quintessing is me, I cant blardy log in to change my username back. I forgot to type out my normal posting name.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 20:09

And yet England is how many years old and you make excuses for its governance? This country is only 45 years old on December 2nd. It has a fuck of a lot to learn. I have no doubt that changes are a foot for all of us. Racial bashing is not my thing though. So if you choose to bash the UAE for racial, women, democracy inequality then go ahead. As far as I can see it is a young country a hell of a long way behind a lot older countries that do the same thing. But if that's what suits your agenda, rather than India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran,... Need I go on. Then go ahead.

Bitofacow · 17/11/2016 20:13

Veiledsentiments I can fully understand you not wanting to listen to the opinions of people on MN. They may be uniformed or unable to prove what they are saying.

Why don't you try Amnesty or Human Rights Watch. They have LOTS to say.

CitrusSun · 17/11/2016 20:14

Even aside from the main topic, could never bury my conscience or integrity enough to be in Dubai, it is built on slave labour, migrant workers paid a pittance to construct high rise luxury buildings so that people can buy, buy, buy, the worst of capitalism, pander to the rich, keep them coming, at expense, enough if it means losing life, of the poor. I don't get it, I really don't, but realise I'm in a minority.

CitrusSun · 17/11/2016 20:15

Sorry, that should have read 'even if it means losing life', not enough.
