To not understand how anyone would go to Dubai

A woman reports being raped, and is promptly arrested for having non-marital sex. And this isn't the first time. How can anyone choose to go to such a savage, uncivilised place?

I can't see what subject I teach makes a blind bit of difference. My argument was that theocracy was leadership deigned by God. A system that the British monarchy have lived by since day dot! Who believes in that horse shit!

I hope you don't teach government and politics. Or history. Because you can't get your head round a quite simple concept.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 20:20

A lot of cities have been built on the back of slaves, minorities, and poor people. Shock, horror. History has repeated itself.
Sounds like you lot would prefer the UAE to,remain as a trucial state as part of the British empire back in the 60s. Feeding the Uk all it's oil and wealth. Why not scroll back another 60 years or so and claim back India and sort out all of their problems too as you are so high and mighty!

newbiz · 17/11/2016 20:21

I wouldn't go because I am not interested in staying in oversized soulless hotels and holidaying with the cast of TOWIE, the real housewives of wherever and he people at school that I cross the road to avoid.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 20:22

So what am I not getting Bannadex. I must be so stupid not to get your point.

Dingarees · 17/11/2016 20:25

veiled

I agree with you. Unfortunately many on this thread seem to want to attack Dubai and single it out because it "attracts the cast of Towie".

It's so wrong to dismiss the entire country over things which are happening all over the world especially when those doing so are basing it on some misplaced sense of blinkered superiority.

QuintessentialShadow · 17/11/2016 20:26

My argument was that theocracy was leadership deigned by God.

Where you are yes, where politics and religion go hand in hand, and this is why the laws there are so hard to change, they are given by their god. So, you cannot go against something which is perceived to be the law of a god, it would be blasphemy, and therefore democracy is not going to happen.

It is not like that in Britain, or elsewhere in Europe as you know. Yes, at the time of Shakespeare, MAN said that God endorsed the leadership of the king, to give the king authority. God has never instated the king/queen. It is just by tradition.

We elect our leaders democratically, the kings and queens are nothing but figureheads, they dont pass down laws from God to the people.

BannedexPIPassessor · 17/11/2016 20:26

I really can't be bothered discussing comparative government with you. You're a teacher; read a book.
I'm out.

BannedexPIPassessor · 17/11/2016 20:27

Don't put your straw man near any naked flames.

Dingarees · 17/11/2016 20:28

Bannadex

Bye!

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 20:29

So how is government elected here? Do you even know? Yes, there is a sheik, a king as such, but what about the rest. Are they voted in. Do you even know? Doubt it.

Veiledsentiments Yes historically some countries did use slave labour. Historically being the key word. Most countries have stopped. I would choose not to visit a country that still did this.

I am happy to see the Coliseum in Rome because it was built by slaves 2000 years ago. Dubai is still being built by workers with no rights. Yet again I suggest you visit the Amnesty or HRW website.

QuintessentialShadow · 17/11/2016 20:30

It is not superiority. It is self preservation.

I have travelled in Jordan, I have been to Dubai, I have travelled through Egypt, I have been to Morocco. Of these places, Morocco is the only place I would return to today. The other countres, I would not visit until things change. I loved Jordan, and I loved Egypt, I have very happy memories from my travels there. But things are different now than they were 16-17 years ago. Now, I dont think I would be safe as a woman.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 20:31

When the shit comes down, you don't have the answers because you don't live here and you don't know. Nice wasting an evening with ignorant idiots.

QuintessentialShadow · 17/11/2016 20:38

I know some of them are voted in, so I guess there are some elements of democracy, but you have an emir or king who is a supreme ruler. But even he must bow to the constitution. And what is the constitution based on?
The legal system is based on Sharia, and I think that is more important than how your politicians are elected. It is the framework they have to operate within that I, as a western woman cant get my head around.

CitrusSun · 17/11/2016 20:38

You seem so defensive and angry Veiled, we are just trying to debate, but you choose to attack. As Bitof said, yes, countries were historically built on slave labour, but as civilisation has advanced it's sort of accepted that's wrong now, but Dubai still exploited its immigrant workers, sending them up on high rise buildings with no regard to their safety, just get the job done so we can bring in money. Greed will never prosper, unless there is a whole heap of un-selfawareness which is unfortunately what capitalism is. If money makes you happy at the expense of others, crack on, I'm glad I have a conscience.

Maybe neither of us really know what goes on, here or there.

We just know what the news we have access to say. And how reliable are they?

We know that the media is powerful, and the political elite is powerful.

I think we just have to accept that we are all ignorant and need to learn more about many things.

Bitofacow · 17/11/2016 20:40

Veiledsetiments you have expressed your opinion about our ignorance vehemently.

If you want expert opinion Amnesty and HRW have detailed and well researched information about the appallingly treatment of various groups in Dubai.

I belive these groups have the answers "when the shit goes down".

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 20:49

What money? Am I raking it in? Am I fuck. I have lived here since I was 4. Not my choice at the time but I have chosen to stay on. I don't like dark cold weather. Hardly surprising given my upbringing.

I agree. Western civilization has advanced. Because it has had the time and been allowed to do so. But it certainly took its time. Human rights have only been around since the 1950s/60s / 80s in S Africa. Yet you are slagging off the human rights in a country that is not yet 45 years old!!

Health and safety does exist here. There is not a building site that does not issue a hard hat and safety boots. You get a seik to wear a hard hat over his turban and you have a whole different fight on your hands. And on that level it is Indians ruling Indians. No one else.

PrimeraVez · 17/11/2016 20:49

Ffs, it's almost laughable that people are so quick to criticise something they are so poorly informed about. Quoting reports that are 10 years old and reading far too many sensationalized Daily Mail articles.

For what it's worth, I've been living here for 6 years and I work in the public sector and I don't live in a 'compound'. Yes, the country has many flaws, some that have devastating consequences for people. BUT the country is less than 50 years old! And it continues to come on in leaps and bounds, new legislation is continually being developed to ensure workers rights, gender equality etc. Did you know that around 70% of students in higher education are women? Did you know that all employers are required to provide healthcare for their staff?

And as for the suggestion that Dubai is all shopping malls and fancy hotels, you're obviously looking in the wrong places. I promise that there is a lot more to it than that.

I find it incredible that anyone goes there. Aside from the ethical issues (did you go on holiday in apartheid South Africa, you unthinking idiots?) it looks a truly vile and vulgar place.

I agree... and not 'just' because of women. Also because of things like..
Religious freedom and feeedom of speech. And for various political ones.

Not to mention the fact that my brother is bi/gay (idk. Probably bi, but with a loving boyfriend). And one of my aunts is a lesbian...

Bitofacow · 17/11/2016 20:55

Primera "looking in the wrong places."

I'm looking at the Amnesty web site. I might have mentioned it before. Last time I checked Amnesty and HRW didn't get their info from the DM.
