To not understand how anyone would go to Dubai

A woman reports being raped, and is promptly arrested for having non-marital sex. And this isn't the first time. How can anyone choose to go to such a savage, uncivilised place?

Ok 22 years old. My apologies. But I bet those old sentiments are still festering in the older generations. Bit like Brexit and the U.K. a.

TulipsInAJug · 17/11/2016 19:08

We are no better.

Rubbish. Of course we're better than somewhere that arrests a woman for being raped.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:09

Yeah. Because those Irish immigrants at the time were definitely getting a fair wage!!

BannedexPIPassessor · 17/11/2016 19:10

Yeah. Because those Irish immigrants at the time were definitely getting a fair wage!!

They had the right to vote.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:12

They are not slaves. They work here because they get paid better than they do at home. And they send the money home because they are given housing and food here. It's called immigration. Been happening for years. Same principle. Just more middle class values.

BarbarianMum · 17/11/2016 19:13

Tulips go tell that to Layla Ibrahim.

Ifailed · 17/11/2016 19:14

Don't feed it.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:14

Yet less than 45% hauled their sorry asses out to do so this time. Democracy. Espoused by the west. But does it really work for the greater good.

BannedexPIPassessor · 17/11/2016 19:14

You carry on telling yourself whatever you need to in order to live with yourself. It's a psychological defence mechanism.

If you're not a democrat, then you really aren't worth talking to or engaging with.

BannedexPIPassessor · 17/11/2016 19:15

Don't feed it.

Yeah, I think you're right.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:17

Well there you go. I was prepared to argue the cause. You call names and spit dummies. Go you!

Bitofacow · 17/11/2016 19:17

Veiledsentiments Really? Really? You don't know the difference but feel able to comment!

US construction was and is heavily unionised. The workers, who included many Mohawk, were well paid. The more dangerous the job the better paid. Not a bed of roses but regulated (within a historical context) and with an organised workforce.

The Gulf states operate a system similar to indentured servitude. The Nepali, Pakistani and Bangladeshi workers are treated shamefully, it is in NO way comparable to the US in the twenties.

BannedexPIPassessor · 17/11/2016 19:19

Lol, of what? Medieval theocracy? The divine right of kings? Ifailed is right. I've given you too much time already.

SanityAssassin · 17/11/2016 19:19

If you like to sit by a pool in a glitzy resort/spa type hotel or a private beach and love shopping trips to huge malls then I suppose it floats your boat. it is however a nicely gilded shithole ( don't look too far outside the cities to see the workers abodes) and the tourists are definitely seen as the cash cow and nothing else.

ihatethecold · 17/11/2016 19:20

I wouldn't go purely because it doesn't sit well with me that the Indian/Bengali labourers are living in poverty.
Promised good wages but now trapped working and living in awful conditions.

Laughingcamel · 17/11/2016 19:25

Some of us actually live in the Middle East and help change happen.

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:26

Well thank god I don't live in your narrow minded small perception of the big wild world outside your perfect little English home back doorstep, people. Travel a little, and see the world for what it is. Not perfect, not a democracy and not living in harmony. But keep preaching to the comverted if that what makes you happy!

veiledsentiments · 17/11/2016 19:28

Of course we're better - says it all really!!

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 17/11/2016 19:29

Dubai seems like an awful place on every single level.

ARumWithAView · 17/11/2016 19:29
  1. Legislation established to protect women from assault and punish the perpetrators of sexual violence, but which, in practice, frequently fall short of this purpose.

  2. Legislation established to punish and shame victims of sexual assult as well as its perpetrators.

Yeah -- that's basically the same, isn't it? Apples and oranges. A legal system designed to protect victims, which sometimes fails, and a legal system which criminalises them.

And, yay, you can leave your iPhone on the table, and the staff are so nice, and if you report a rape you may be jailed, and it's a really vibrant city.

StrawberryLime · 17/11/2016 19:32

As a female, it always baffles me that other females would visit of their own free will.
Just why? Seriously, why would you?! Confused
This rape case where the female is allegedly subjected to an attack and SHE'S the one who gets arrested?! Angry
You're treated as a totally second class citizen. That's it putting it politely. You're treated as a nothing. Not a person anyway.
It's all very well saying "I live there and it's all fine" but serious question - are you cossetted away from the harsh realities and in a pretty little expat type compound?
If so if you ventured out would you be treated exactly the same?

Pluto30 · 17/11/2016 19:34

Dubai was a miserable hellhole the one time I went there. Would never go back.

Although everyone else I know seemed to like it. Hmm
