to be upset over a fib (that actually may be a lie)

I drive dh's car, he drives mine for various reasons. I keep mine in good running condition but it has just had an expensive service/mot.
We spend the whole being a bit poor, nothing to bad, just no luxurys, in overdrafts etc despite working v hard and earning quite well.
I asked him to sort out mot for his car, hes been a bit vague. Finally told me its due end of Nov so he'll get it booked in. In a moment of clarity I googled whens my mot up, dvla website says it expired at end of August! So he's lying about it. But I suppose its possible he genuinely didn't know...
I drive the kids around in it so now I'm nail bitingly anxious. Going to discuss it later after work but aibu to think this is actually quite a 'big' thing to mislead me on?!

Surely it's not possible that he didn't know when it was due for MOT? Do you not get a reminder letter?

He probably just made a mistake, however no valid mot is serious, it invalidates the insurance, so you need to get it resolved asap.

Well yes, because you're breaking the law by driving it. Can you book it in for after work? Legally you're only allowed to drive it to an MOT garage once it's expired.

As above. It's easily done though as you don't get any reminder so he could genuinely have thought it was this month.

I have done it with my car... Realised my mistake 2 months after MOT!

No, you don't get reminder letters for MOTs. If you use a garage regularly, they may remind you but the DVLA does not.

Do not drive this car. Your insurance is invalidated without an MOT and the police could seize the vehicle if you are stopped. Switch cars back until he sorts it out.

I just text him to confirm the date it needs to go in. Definitely expires end of Nov apparently. Is he genuinely happy for me to drive around with an illegal car :(

I think its weird you are jumping to the conclusion that he's doing it deliberately tbh. Chances are he's just got his dates mixed up. It happens. Just book the car in.

Is insurance actually invalidated? Would chk with insurance co I think. If not, then I'd drive it and hope u don't get stopped, if it is invalidated then wouldn't drive it.

No not yet, I know I'll be grumpy when I say it and not in the mood to have passive aggressive texts all day. I'm sure its an innocent mistake, just a bit stupid of him

Vivenne I'm in N Ireland and we do get a reminder letter, and MOTs aren't carried out by garages. I didn't realise there were no reminders elsewhere. Smile

Can I just remind people to check it has been done. My DS MOTd her car last year, paid the invoice etc and only realised last week they hadn't registered it. Garage very apologetic and redid it for free but obviously it was totally my DSs responsibility to have checked the piece of paper was there her invoice etc.

If he is adamant it's November even after you double checked, that would suggest he does genuinely believe it's November.

Unless he has a history of lying, then keeping up the lie once it's found out.

No need to have an argument about it. Just book it in for the MOT and tell him you need your car today.

He has history of 'Protecting' me. I have form for being stroppy and kicking off without all the facts.

This would be unacceptable to me. More bearable if it was truly accidental. Very serious if part of a network of such lies. What else does he lie about op.

If it has no MOT you can't drive it today either. Tell him you need your own car today.

Why did you text him and ask him to confirm fate and not just be honest and text him and say just spotted dvla said end of Aug, need to get it booked in?
