user1478683920 since 'Hillary defended a rapist and laughed about it' keeps getting wheeled out, have a read. And consider how the criminal justice system actually works.

www.snopes.com/hillary-clinton-freed-child-rapist-laughed-about-it/

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 13:04

birdy. I believe Hilary laughed during a discussion of how she managed to get a plea bargain for the rapist of a 12 year old girl - resulting in him walking free. A rock and a hard place, I'd say....

birdybirdywoofwoof · 09/11/2016 13:06

Oh that's just a load of shit. I heard about that interview and it was nothing like that.

Don't worry though - they've got the fella who was up on a child rape charge, who has assaulted over ten women, and has been caught on camera explaining how he abuses women.

Good choice, all those non-sexist Americans.

Quandry · 09/11/2016 13:06

I'm shocked and saddened for the US, but not at all surprised. Politics tends to go in cycles, swinging between degrees of left and right (or very right!). Mostly it's because politicians have to make such massive, over-exaggerated promises to get elected in the first place. They come into office in a blaze of glory and hope for the future, then in 5-10 years time, when most of their promises have come to nothing the voters lurch back the other way in favour of another 'promised land'.

At 5 am this morning I was despairing, but actually I now feel strangely calm. I think a lot of his so-called promises will go the way of the £350m for the NHS. No wall will be built. He will not pull out of the WTO. All Muslims will not be deported. Although the House and the Senate are both Republican, Trump himself did not have widespread support within the Republican Party. You have to believe that there are more than a few 'good men' (and women?!) who will reign him in and vote against his more extreme policies.
The 'Glass Ceiling' project is on hold for the moment, but will come... eventually.
For me, the most worrying bit of the Trump win is that he will have legitimised a new wave of racism and misogyny which may result in violence and aggression. That's set back so much of the good work done by Obama Sad.

I doubt he'll serve more than one term, and they may try to get rid of him sooner. Anyway, he's an overweight 70 year old man in a stressful job with a health record he's unwilling to share...

[Hmm A glimmer of hope?...]

Greengoddess12 · 09/11/2016 13:07

Fookin

Stupid generalisations and mud slinging at those who disagree with you cost Gordon Brown and Labour the election.

Indeed attitudes like the ridiculous Corbin who surrounds himself with his supporters and fails to engage with the millions of disaffected labour voters who supported UKIP are the reason the tories will go on and on.

Please at least try to stop calling people with concerns as legitimate and sensible as no dought yours are 'thick and stupid'

Elendon · 09/11/2016 13:07

It wasn't the disenfranchised working class who voted Trump in, it was mainly middle class middle aged men what done it! Quelle surprise.

www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/11/08/us/politics/election-exit-polls.html

The working class saw a valid voice in Clinton, and rightly so.

areyoubeingserviced · 09/11/2016 13:08

So Hilary Clinton is untrustworthy and that's why people didn't vote for her.
However, Donald Trump has racist , sexist views and is a tax avoider. So it's ok to vote for him. I am trying desperately to get my head around that.

Batteriesallgone · 09/11/2016 13:08

My husband does an awful lot - most - of his business with Americans. More South than NY IYSWIM, don't want to out myself. When we comes to talking American politics we adopt the smile and nod approach - having an opinion as a non-American can be very dangerous in business.

Anyway.

There are an awful lot of rumours about Hilary and her fondness for young girls. About Hilary and Bill being joint predators. I'm not saying I know anything about anything I'm just repeating what we hear. So the allegations about Trump - well a lot of people think there would be similar against Hilary she's just better at burying them.

Hilary has been around for ages. Pushing and pushing to get to the top. She has been repeatedly rejected and Just. Hasn't. Listened. No one we knew trusted her to listen if in power.

Hilary has managed to stay powerful despite a lot of shit. She appears to do a lot of arm twisting, she gives the impression she has a lot of dirt on a lot of people. So she would be very successful at getting her way.

A morally questionable person who won't listen but will be able to ramroad stuff through - I have been told numerous times 'I don't want to vote for either of them but no way am I voting for a dictator-in-all-but-name'

I honestly don't know what I would have done if I was American. Probably voted Clinton and held my nose but phew, what a whiff.

Bluebolt · 09/11/2016 13:08

I feel that both the USA and the U.K. Need to examine how we create parliament. In the U.K. I am partyless. I was liberal but voting is now picking the best of a pile of shit. All the same just different colour rosettes. If Clinton had won against a better republican opponent than Trump there would probably of been an outcry about how corrupt she is and how thick people where for voting for her.

Quandry · 09/11/2016 13:08

P.S. Things I learnt this morning:

  • Melania's Dad was a used car salesman and a Communist
  • The Clintons were guests at the Trump wedding Confused
birdybirdywoofwoof · 09/11/2016 13:10

The problem is not only what he does though...

He has said he wants a more isolationist foreign policy - and that NATO is crap. Let's see what Putin thinks of this: North Korea, China. This IS giving them a free hand.

We can expect to see lots of tentative aggression across the world these coming months. This is terrifying for many countries.

WrongTrouser · 09/11/2016 13:10

Maudlin fair enough, I interpreted your comments about competence and sophistication as generalising when you were talking about specific conversations which is completely different, I agree.

Elendon · 09/11/2016 13:11

The 'Glass Ceiling' project is on hold for the moment, but will come... eventually.

The breaking of the glass ceiling has come for many countries other than the USA. The USA prefer their women/pussy to be firmly within that ceiling. And they are not about to give it up.

Elendon · 09/11/2016 13:12

Donald Trump thinks women are pussy. This is the president of the USA.

Working together? Fuck off Donald!

areyoubeingserviced · 09/11/2016 13:12

That's it Quandry- I am concerned that Trump's election has legitimised sexism and
racism and cause problems . There are parallels with Brexit where there was a rise in hate crimes after the referendum

Marynary · 09/11/2016 13:12

And why do posters think it's fine to call both Trump and Brexit voters 'uneducated' while not voicing disgust about the lack of a decent educational system in both countries? 'Uneducated' happens for a reason - although it's a shitty card to play when you don't want the result you'd hoped for.

No cards are "being played" as there is nothing to play. I don't think that posters on this thread can do much about the "uneducated" in America considering that most don't actually live there and have no influence. Regardless, considering that many voters would be well past school age, lack of knowledge of current affairs isn't necessarily the fault of the current education system.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 13:13

batteries. This!

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 09/11/2016 13:14

What a load of shit! First brexit and now trump. What is the world coming to? Yes ok the 'people' voted. That just goes to show that the 'people' who voted for trump are just as stupid as brexit voters. Flipping idiots.

I've made £100 on each occasion betting on stupid. It's not let me down yet. I may give up the day job shortly and make a career out of it.

My next bet is on Marine Le Pen, I'm afraid.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 09/11/2016 13:15

Yes. But people want to frame this was a working class revolt against elites - and are pretending that Trumps appeal transcended race. It didn't.

Elendon · 09/11/2016 13:15

Hey Batteries, how's your pussy? Is it younger than 35? Because if it ain't then why are you bothering with an opinion!

And no one cares about your wealthy husband.

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 09/11/2016 13:16

I suppose it's easier to write people off as uneducated rather than ask why huge swathes of the population have so little investment in the status quo that they would play such a risky hand.

I say this as a remainer and one who is horrified by Trump's election win.

But finger pointing and accusations of stupidity don't get us any closer to understanding why we have this risky voting on both sides of the pond.

I worry that unless we address that then things will only get worse as resources dwindle and we see further economic instability.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 13:17

mary. If it's not the fault of the educational system, then why are they 'uneducated'? The same thing happened with Brexit - I voted Remain, but was pretty disgusted at the use of 'racist' and 'thick' bandied about, not to mention ageist remarks when the results came through. Why is name-calling ok and acceptable if an electoral result displeases you, but not when it's done by a candidate?

Quandry · 09/11/2016 13:18

Bluebolt - I would love to see a new party, based on honesty, compassion, tolerance etc, but politics has become such an ugly, dangerous game, that it's hard to see which sensible, intelligent person would choose to get involved.
We've let democracy become some sort of horrific reality TV show which is a zero sum game - one side wins only if the other loses (and badly!).
It's hardly surprising that it therefore only attracts the narcissistic, megalomaniac loons...

I do think some sort of coalition type system may be a better bet, where more interests are represented and they need to work together more. Sometimes that does result in everything taking longer though.

I wish the Women's Equality Party had left off the 'Women's' bit, then they could have become more than a single issue party.

shovetheholly · 09/11/2016 13:18

jess The NY Times exit poll data suggests only 37% of those with postgraduate qualifications voted Trump. However, it's a more even picture for those with a college degree (45% for Trump) or lower. However, if you chunk the data by race, it becomes clear that identity is a major factor here: white people without a college degree were far more likely to vote Trump (67%) while non-white people without a college degree were far more likely to vote Clinton (75%).

With Brexit, the data seems to be clearer cut - lower levels of education were a major predictor of Leave. (In the Ashcroft poll, 57% of those with a university degree voted Remain, rising to 64% of those with a postgraduate degree).

Of course education is not intelligence. It is important to stress that. I actually think the difference isn't clever versus stupid. I personally suspect it has more to do with the ways of thinking that are taught at degree level and not so much before that, and in particular with a style of systemic analysis of the social that tends to emphasise the importance of things like policy and institutional structures over individual choice.

OnlyPlayingLeapFrog · 09/11/2016 13:19

Racism is also apparently far more acceptable to the "educated" classes if expressed through bombing and drones (Clinton) rather than insane statements (Trump).
The world is fucked up.
