wrong a voice of reason in the rabble.

something odd has happened to the left, something very odd indeed.

winterisnigh · 09/11/2016 12:39

That just goes to show that the 'people' who voted for trump are just as stupid as brexit voters. Flipping idiots

^ scary.

WrongTrouser · 09/11/2016 12:40

It's very interesting how Brexit comes up so much in discussions about Trump. Does anyone know of any polls on the relationship between voting in the referendum and views on Trump and Clinton?

I'm not sure what use any information on this would be, as in the UK it seems many of us can't grasp or understand the feelings of the American electorate (for example I have never been able to understand the level of dislike for Clinton from some none-Republicans) but it would be interesting to see.

Notonthestairs · 09/11/2016 12:41

I'm less interested in Trump. I think he's going to find himself boxed in by his own party. There certainly wont be any "draining of the swamp".
It's all about the Republican party now. Where will they start? What will America look like in a year from now?
Genuinely interested by the way, not being goady.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 09/11/2016 12:41

Ah, winterisnigh, have you got a link on all those muslims voting Trump?

Birdandsparrow · 09/11/2016 12:41

The left has died a death globally as a viable alternative so even people who aren't thick or racist end up supporting people like Trump, or things like Brexit as there's no other way to register a protest or attmept to engineer change. Not quite sure why the left has died, but it needs a resurgence because the end game of things like Brexit and trump is a more dangerous world.

MaudlinNamechange · 09/11/2016 12:42

"It's such a circular argument isn't it though. "

I have never heard that circular argument

I am not arguing that it is ok to call people stupid. It isn't.

But, who is doing that? Is this a straw man?

and if they are - if someone says "Brexit hasn't changed anything!" and is challenged on the grounds that 1, it hasn't happened yet, and it will change lots of things when it does; 2, actually the vote has changed things already - if someone is challenged in that way, and even the person actually says "so you are stupid" - which I have not heard - then that is NOT a circular argument. It's not "brexit = stupid = brexit etc" . It's "you say brexit isn't a problem - which it demonstrably is - so you are stupid"

Still not ok to say it. but there are actual facts being referenced here, not just lofty sneerings, as is always being accused

maudlin. Interesting point. I imagine elsewhere on MN, that opinion wouldn't generally be endorsed and the imaginary OP our be told to LTB.

My point is that she didn't get elected for being a woman, or that the electorate who voted for Trump were 'thick', 'uneducated', 'poor', 'white' or predominately male - she lost because she was extremely unpopular and exploited the Clinton Foundation (set up in her husband's name, I believe) for her own financial gain, as well as numerous other shady dealings.

People didn't like her - not for being female, but for who she is. I don't know how I would have voted - I'd probably have shredded the ballot paper to be honest, but comments such as 'America would never vote for a woman' and 'thick hillbillies' are equally as generalising, ignorant and judgemental as the comments made by Trump. He won. For better or for worse.

*It's just name calling, it gets you nowhere and it is offensive and I wish people would stop doing it."

We are not trying to "go anywhere" though and people giving their opinion on Trump and his voters will have zero impact on whether we "get anywhere."

Ice3 · 09/11/2016 12:48

I lost hope when Sanders was out really.

FelineJustFine · 09/11/2016 12:48

When those who voted Trump in realise, it was not about improving their lifestyle, but improving his, riot ?

GinAndTunic yet when Trump gets accused he's automatically guilty?

I see how it is*

The hard-of-thinking are out in force today, I see.

It is the exact opposite. Apologies for using big words that you may not have understood.

Trump is the official Republican party candidate! It's not like he is a supporter of communism. Just more of the same, and in five years time all the ordinary Joes wearing baseball caps will wonder what happened. Just like many blacks did about Obama. He will have a cabinet full of familiar political faces with the same guys pulling the levers behind the scenes who operated George W. Bush, etc.
Trump will be a bit richer, the 99% a little poorer, the 1% a lot richer and game goes on.
If the USA had voted Bernie Sanders in there might have been genuine change. But he was too radical to even get the ticket!

Say there is an 2020 election in the UK and it's May or Corbyn. I'm female and I support Corbyn. If I don't vote for May, does that make me 'sexist'?

saoirse31 · 09/11/2016 12:57

I think the celebrity concerts in last few days were a shining example of how the democrats have lost a lot of people. It was such 'aren't we all great and liberal etc' while people, r losing jobs, in extreme poverty, with poor housing, schools etc.

The views that people r thick if they voted for trump are also showing just why this happened. If you've spent 8 yrs feeling unrepresented, why woulnt u vote for the only opposition? And people and most media denigrating u for not sharing the politically accepted view of what's right?
That would only inc ur determination to achieve something different.

Also in USA there's some people with v conservative social views. I'd say they feel unheard by Democrats too.

Clinton was an awful candidate, tho I'd have preferred her to win. But I blame the democrats for losing, rather than republicans for winning.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 09/11/2016 12:58

What are you talking about Jess? We don't have a Presidential system here, you know that right?

Anyone who votes a sexual predator like Trump for President is....bizarre. Absolutely bizarre.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 09/11/2016 13:00

When those who voted Trump in realise, it was not about improving their lifestyle, but improving his, riot ?

I don't know if they ever do realise, do they?

rslsys · 09/11/2016 13:00

At least if the dollar falls - It'll wipe out the Marmite price increase . . .

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 13:01

And why do posters think it's fine to call both Trump and Brexit voters 'uneducated' while not voicing disgust about the lack of a decent educational system in both countries? 'Uneducated' happens for a reason - although it's a shitty card to play when you don't want the result you'd hoped for.

FelineJustFine · 09/11/2016 13:02

I can believe a FBI Kennedy goodbye happening with this lunatic in charge.

And who could blame them?
