Hoped Clinton would win, but both were awful candidates. Trump used the republicans barely supporting him to his advantage, acted like the outsider. He may well be dangerous but he's not stupid. I think Clinton and Democrats have lost touch with large parts of USA, both on economic and so coal issues. Think the massively overstated celebrity concerts were ridiculous and unlikely to garnet votes where she needed them.

Also think the whole stereotyping of genders and races in ter.s of likely voting intebtions might now stop. All women and all Latinos were never going to vote exclusively for Clinton. Ridiculous to think they might

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 08:42

voted for the evil of two lessers

Great way to define it!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/11/2016 08:45

I wonder if the Mexicans are now HOPING for a wall

Southallgirl · 09/11/2016 08:45

This was a positive action vote to give Trump a chance to clear out the swamp. Those that didnt like either candidate simply did not vote.

Backward country. Official.

Good article in The Atlantic a while back on misogyny in relation to reactions to Clinton:

www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/10/fear-of-a-female-president/497564/

It's just not true that she is 'only marginally better' than Trump. She's not perfect of course but they are worlds apart and a big chunk of the reaction against her is about sexism. This is a very bad day for gender equality and a bad day for women (not to mention various minority groups).

Secretspillernamechange · 09/11/2016 08:48

That case was dropped a few days before the election (accuser withdrew complaint).

My mistake, sorry - I thought it was only the press conference where she was going to reveal her identity that had been cancelled. Absolutely terrible if she's been forced into silence.

areyoubeingserviced · 09/11/2016 08:49

Totally agree spank. I can't understand why ANY woman would vote for him.
It appears that America is not ready for a female president

romanrainsalot · 09/11/2016 08:49

Well this election and EU ref have certainly brought out the worst in people. Agree w previous posters re appalling statements about some people shouldn't be allowed to vote (old dears came in for a particularly nasty treatment "they've ruined our future" etc) and now "lets hope he gets assassinated" - despicable.

The fact is, just like with EU ref, ordinary working class people don't have anyone standing up for them, representing them, understanding them. Labour party here don't get it, and made the EU ref about themselves with bitter infighting. People here voted in a slight majority to leave EU because they don't feel that the political establishments are working for them.

Its the same in the US. Clinton doesn't represent ordinary working America, she represents the establishment. So when Trump comes along, with soundbites that resonate with some people, this is the result.

It does not make every American a racist, sexist pig as I actually feel sorry for Americans. The land of opportunity and these were the two choices for President?

Perhaps some good can come from this? Surely Americans will now look at their electoral system. Trump and Clinton got to this stage because they had billions of $ to spend on campaigning. Not because of policies or from experience of being an "ordinary American" with a plan to make a difference.

Either way, whether you like it or not, Democracy has spoken.

BipBippadotta · 09/11/2016 08:49

Thanks for that link, Ostrich

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 08:51

Two awful candidates - one had to win. I'm alarmed less at the result, and more at the comments calling voters 'ignorant' and 'unintelligent'. These views are as sweeping and revolting as some of Trump's own. What do these posters want? The vote removed from those they deem less educated than themselves? What the hell, let's have a chat about eugenics while we're at...

The public decided. I'm less shocked than I thought I'd be. If Hilary had won, I don't think I'd be exactly celebrating. We'll just have to wait and see.

areyoubeingserviced · 09/11/2016 08:52

I wish that people would read posts properly.
I think only one poster wished that Trump would be assassinated .
Others have just pointed out that this may be a risk. Please read posts

Trump has won 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Mcchickenbb41 · 09/11/2016 08:53

Had the news on most of the morning dd aged nearly three was running around the house singing Donald chump Donald chump........ Needless to say I didn't correct her

frostyfingers · 09/11/2016 08:53

Let's just hope that he shows a side that he's never shown before - a reasonable, sane and logical one..... I suspect not, but we can always hope.

I heard someone on the radio saying "well it's democracy in action isn't it?" And the response was "democracy voted in the fascists in the 30's", to me it's a truly terrifying result.

As an aside - how do the Americans get him out before his time is up - is there a political process that can oust him?

Destinysdaughter · 09/11/2016 08:53

This is truly terrifying and depressing.

I would love to be a fly on the wall the first time Trump meets Theresa May. She won't take any nonsense from him!

Moanranger · 09/11/2016 08:53

Trump will execute the Republican agenda, which includes cancelling Obamacare, lowering rich people's taxes ( leading to a sharp rise in govt debt), appointing one or more right-wingers to the Supreme Court. He will "forget" his protectionist promises to the base ( as the rich benefit from free trade). The environmental protection agency (a Nixon legacy!) will go. Life will get worse for his base. He won't run again as after 4 yrs he'll get bored.
Clinton: too much baggage, a lot of bad judgement & kept the wrong people around her. Bernie Sanders contest v damaging & fed the internet conspiracy machine.
The vote for Trump a bit more nuanced - Americans fed up with politics generally & wanted an outsider, but they now have pure right wing Republicanism. Good luck with that, the economy will suffer.

MsHooliesCardigan · 09/11/2016 08:54

roman I get what you're saying but Trump is The Establishment. He's a tax dodger who got where he is through inherited wealth. How he's managed to pull of this stunt of getting people to believe that he understands the struggle of ordinary working people is beyond me.

2kids2dogsnosense · 09/11/2016 08:55

I only hope that Trump will be manage by his advisors and not a loose cannon.

The pre-Nazi politicians thought they could manage Hitler.

This news is awful. America is the most immature, greedy, STUPID nation. You just couldn't make it up. Build a Wall; Deport the Immigrants: Destroy the Environment.

What a "to-do" list!

I am seriously thinking of eating ALL of my Fry's Chocolate Creams, in case Armageddon is unleashed before I have the chance.

user1471950254 · 09/11/2016 08:55

Devastated. Trump winning & Brexit makes for a scary future Sad

Graphista · 09/11/2016 08:56

" I only hope that Trump will be manage by his advisors and not a loose cannon." Don't be so hopeful. It's almost a completely republican ruled government now, the blocks against Obama were largely BECAUSE he's a democrat not because they necessarily thought the policies were a bad idea. They're far more unlikely to go against their own party's president.

It's a truly terrifying result, not just for Americans but for the world.

"there should also be much, much more focus on current events and world politics in schools" here in Scotland children are taught a subject called modern studies, it teaches all that and more and is very good at teaching critical thinking.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 09/11/2016 08:59

it appears America wasn't ready for a female president

Stop this crap already. Half of America is female. We have had two female PMs in the UK - one democratically elected , the other not (so far). Are you suggesting that makes us more 'evolved' than the US (bearing in mind that the UK is tiny in comparison and abortion laws in Ireland are still questionable). It wasn't about her being female - if you go by the assumption that Americans are predominantly sexist and racist, then how did Obama win? It was about the fact that the American public, men and women, thought she was unfit for the job.

I loathe Trump, but you can't keep blaming his election on racism, ignorance and misogyny. It doesn't stand.

romanrainsalot · 09/11/2016 09:01

MrsHoolies I agree, Trump is also of the same ilk. I never said he was of ordinary America. Just he had the right soundbites and access to $ as did Hillary.

Democrats, just like Labour here, are not in tune with the people.
