Woke up to this AND snow. FFS, what next?! Sad

Mittensonastring · 09/11/2016 08:26

I was speaking to 6 young Americans last night and only one would admit to voting and he had deliberately spoilt his ballot paper. It's like the UK, younger people are the least likely to vote. They felt that both candidates were crap so hadn't vote that all.

What people, have to work out is why people hold his views instead of just being repulsed by them and then work out what needs to be done instead of hand wringing about it. It's why the right continues to rise.

I was involved in the women's rights movement 30 years ago. Sexism has moved on but not enough. Obama made it to the Whitehouse and people somehow thought American was all enlightened but he is a man after all.

Regarding the poster who is shocked a Hispanic person would vote for him. Established non white immigrants can still hate immigration. My neighbour whose parents like my Dad came over in the 1950's from commonwealth countries hated the EU open borders policy. Liberals and the left are always very vocal because of virtue signalling, Social media is full of it.

I dislike Trump as much as everyone on this thread but I am not surprised at all.

rawsoenna. Exactly. How are these kind of comments any more defendable than some of Trump's?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/11/2016 08:27

Durham

Exactly

mishmash1979 · 09/11/2016 08:27

Ginger boy; last month I heard her speak at a rally and said to hubbie "Michelle Obama should go for president". She is inspiring; not sure trumps wife will have such a positive impact!!!

bestofbothhovis · 09/11/2016 08:27

I'veburntthetoast trump has a trial coming up this month I do believe

LetsAllEatCakes · 09/11/2016 08:28

s a very dangerous way to treat people -( as if some are lesser than others, and their voices shouldn't be heard.) and once you have that attitude towards people you have lost the plot of what a true labourcsupporter is,all about.

I'm not a labour supporter but I'd have to agree with this. All voices should be heard. Even it's you have to hear something you disagree with. Otherwise it's very dictatory.

UnseenAcademical · 09/11/2016 08:31

I vowed never to say this on this site, but at this moment I am so fucking glad that I do not have children, (and I feel for those of you who do, and for your children who will inherit this mess of a world).

I remember Reagan being elected and the fear then, and this 'trumps' that.

Alabastard · 09/11/2016 08:33

I'm weeping for the LGBTQ community in the USA.

rawsienna · 09/11/2016 08:33

How depressing. Thick hillbillies''

That's the type of mind set Hitler had.
He only agreed with perfect people, people who met certain criteria.
He wouldn't have allowed poorer people to vote.

JenniferYellowHat1980 · 09/11/2016 08:34

I dread elections in France and Germany. It feels that the world is stepping to the right and that IS are winning.

CryingShame · 09/11/2016 08:34

They are saying that people who have never voted came out to vote for Trump, just like they did in the UK for Brexit. It means you can't trust the polls as the polls look back at previous results, and can't factor in the stupidity of people whose voting intentions have never been known.

What the hell have they voted in?

mishmash - Michelle Obama has said she won't run for president. Terrible shame.

I just feel numb. They are going to give this man the nuclear codes in January.

BipBippadotta · 09/11/2016 08:35

All voices should be heard in a democracy; there should also be much, much more focus on current events and world politics in schools, making it clear how policies affect individuals in their daily lives, so that people come out of education equipped to vote in their own interests (whatever those may be) when they are adults. So that their voices count for something that might change their lives for the better; so that we're all less vulnerable to big personalities (Farage / Trump) or characters onto whom we can project all our most idealistic hopes for a better world (Corbyn / Sanders) and can look more closely and pragmatically at politicans' capacity for critical thinking and diplomacy, their understanding of economics, think about the limitations they will realistically have on their power to do what they promise, etc.

JoyLibs · 09/11/2016 08:35

When people say that Hillary is corrupt and a liar...are we then saying that Trump isn't a liar? That he isn't corrupt? I just...I don't know where this comes from. I don't understand how being honest about your disdain for women and minorities translates to being truthful and uncorrupt.

iveburntthetoast Really fantastic point re: disenfranchised voter suppression.

Radicalrooster · 09/11/2016 08:36

Part of me's loving this, having been condescendingly informed by a poster here (can't remember who) that my refusal to believe the predictions touted by Nate Silver and his FiveThirtyEight website was naïve. And yet Lo, those predictions were absolute bollocks and I presume Silver is now looking for a new job (serving fries somewhere).

As for the result, this is where the US constitution proves its worth. No need to panic.

As for Hillary, what a legacy. Unable to beat a mentally ill, pathologically untrustworthy misogynist in a popularity contest. At least it saves her the trouble of being assassinated.

hiddenmnetter · 09/11/2016 08:36

I'm sorry but this is all going way over the top - these comparisons with Hitler really need to stop because they are completely inaccurate. Hitler had, prior to being elected in the early 30's, attempted to gain power numerous times. In fact, the Nazi party had gained more votes in the election previously to when he was finally elected. It was at this point that Hitler abandoned democratic methods and surrounded the German parliament with brownshirts and forced people to elect him. After instituting emergency measures, he then collapsed the role of prime minister and president into the role of Fuhrer, which was then established as a life-long role. All this in the background of economic recovery driven by re-arming the country, re-establishing the ruhr valley, and a massive investment programme backed up by post-depression growth from a highly industrialised country with a skilled labour force.

So there are two significant differences: Hitler was never actually elected by the people; he forced the parliament to accept him. Second, he was acceptable to the German people because they believed that the economic recovery was down to his economic policies when in fact they were more to do with the wider global economic recovery.

When he was finally took power, the Nazi party only gained 29% of the vote down from 33% in the previous election.

Hitler's rise to power was not in any way similar to Trumps, other than that they are both right wing (nominally, although in modern terms that doesn't really apply to Nazism). Stop the ridiculous comparisons, and if you're going to look to history to teach you lessons, then actually learn some history before trying!! I know the guardian would have us all believe that Trumps brownshirts were at polling stations, but American law and order is more robust than that. If there was any substantial evidence of the kind, do you not think that the democrats would be screaming the house down and calling for a new vote?

Southallgirl · 09/11/2016 08:37

289 to Trump, 218 HC so far. One or two States still to advise, but he's won. Great news.

rawsienna · 09/11/2016 08:37

I bet the leaders in Europe are crapping themselves this morning. They have elections coming up.

GinAndTunic · 09/11/2016 08:37

I can't say that either candidate was very inspiring but it seems as though the US has voted for the evil of two lessers.

The Democrats should take this as a wake-up call and ask themselves why they were unable to field a candidate who could beat a very poor opponent.

NinjaLeprechaun · 09/11/2016 08:37

Apparently, if everybody who voted for a third party, or write in, candidate had voted for Clinton, she would have won by a considerable margin.
Anybody who dislikes Trump but "couldn't bring themselves" to vote for Hillary should be absolutely ashamed of themselves right now.

On a happier note, my home state voted in an openly LGBT Governor. That's the first time that's happened. So I'm a bit proud of that, even though I had very little to do with it.

BipBippadotta · 09/11/2016 08:38

Joy I absolutely don't get this either re: Hillary being corrupt and a liar, hence Trump is an equal or better choice. Confused Makes fuck all sense to me.

Tiivola · 09/11/2016 08:38

The court case in December will be huge, a chance that he could be convicted of raping a 13 year old.

That case was dropped a few days before the election (accuser withdrew complaint).

Southallgirl · 09/11/2016 08:39

This just goes to show that political journalists cannot see the wood for the trees. I think the groupthink knocks out any imagination or gut feeling from them. Overpaid and pretty useless. Good result.
