To think people that walk whilst smoking look uncouth?

I'm not being goady and I am also a smoker but wouldn't ever walk through the street just casually smoke in hand puffing away. I think it looks uncouth. I don't tend to notice people anyway on my commute but I do notice the smokers and think perhaps they should find a bar/cafe with outdoor seating or some kind of smokers corner. Not on the main bloody high-street!

Well there aren't many places they can. It's outside. The same would go for people walking and eating I suppose. Just not the done thing.

She didn't like the people ogling her on the bus.

I always thought it looked way dodgier to drop out of sight but somehow smoking on the bus was for hussies and miners.

And I agree. Along with eating whilst walking along (apart from.an ice cream) or doing make up in public. I feel myself turning into my Granny when I see it.

I'm embarrassed that I smoke and will always hide away to smoke if possible because it's such a frowned upon habit these days.

Uncouth sounds like something from a Jane Austin novel but I know what you mean, it's bad manners in a crowded area. I will have a fag occasionally if I'm walking somewhere and there's no one about though. Maybe I'm common and vulgar.

My pet hate is women smoking while pushing a buggy. No need, wait til you get home love and have it in the garden.

I agree. I smoke, and even sometimes outside my garden. I never walk down the street smoking, it''s "common", so I hide behind a shelter and puff away.

Many many years ago when I was a young woman who smoked, my mum told me never to smoke outdoors as it was "common". This from a woman who came from a very poor working class background but who had very strong opinions about what was respectable behaviour. Needless to say, I took no notice whatsoever.

This reminds me of my nan, I was out shopping with her one day and she kept saying we need to find somewhere to sit as she can't walk around smoking or she'll look common! Apparently sitting down rolling a fag doesn't look as tacky

Uncouth is a sadly underused word.

Smoking is best done sitting on a plastic chair in the front garden, holding a can of Stella. Preferably whilst wearing an old bathrobe and pyjamas with hearts printed on. Yelling at the many children around one's feet optional.

Smoking is revolting. Walking doesn't make it any worse.

You're probably being unreasonable. That being said, when I was a smoker I never cared to smoke whilst perambulating along the boulevard. I too felt it to be uncouth. Unless I had recently quit a hostelry and was seven sheets to the wind. In which case issues of couthness did not blight my mind.

I saw someone smoking yesterday in the street and I was a bit taken aback, it's just not very prevalent anymore.

I didn't think less of him for it actually, he was a nice friendly bloke, who just happened to stink to high heaven. I would have minded if my kids were around though.

The only thing that puzzles me now about smoking in public would be where to flip it.

Mostly it's vaping now though, so you walk along behind someone who creates an enormous cloud every 2 minutes.

OK, now I feel that more people should be 'perambulating along the boulevard in an 'uncouth' manner.

With or without a fag it just has to be done

my mum would never smoke on the street as she considered it tacky! She also considered it tacky to light up in a cafe/restaurant without checking if the other diners minded. She was MOST put out when someone did mind one day

Reading this thread has made me fancy a crafty fag (although in the back garden not whilst strutting along the street)
