To stop wearing hoodies because I'm 31?

I'm sure other folk my age are able to rock a hoodie no problems but I went to put on an old favourite this morning - a skate-brand camouflage zip up one - and the words mutton and lamb immediately sprang to mind.

I have a lot of hoodies and think my style is a bit... young (not "on-trend young", just haven't really changed my style that much since I was young myself!)

Went into town after work today to buy 4 naice smarti-sh jumpers to avoid a similar scenario tomorrow morning.

AIBU to ask if you've had similar fallings-out with much trusted and loved staples of your wardrobe?!

Floisme I really hadn't thought about what it actually meant but now that I know... I'm never going to use it again! For myself or anyone! Quite a horrible turn pf phrase actually. Oops!

And DinosaursRoar I think you are pretty spot on with that!

My generation invented hoodies. They are ours, I tell you, Ours into the grave!

LittleWingSoul · 07/01/2020 01:11

@floisme this thread was the point I never used that phrase again and possibly the start of my route down the path of feminism

FYI for NYE I wore a black and gold sequin shift dress with a HOODIE and trainers!

Thank you for making me rethink that phrase though. I've never looked back! God, I was green!

I love my hoodies. I am 40. I have no fucks to give if I'm being judged for wearing them. I still have the hoody my late auntie bought me when I was early 20s, its seen better days now but its my go to comfort hoody when I'm having shit mental health days.

I really want a poncho, but struggling to find a pattern to knit one for a large large lady, that also has a hood.

Keep the hoodies, ditch the sensible jumpers

Sammy900 · 07/01/2020 02:06

I still wear a hoodie and I'm 40 and I don't give a shit

eaglejulesk · 07/01/2020 02:17

60 years old and wearing a hoodie at the moment.

steff13 · 07/01/2020 02:32

I only like the ones that zip up the front. My boobs feel squished in the pullover ones. But I'm 42 and I like them. They're perfect for when it's a little chilly but not cold enough for a coat.

steff13 · 07/01/2020 02:34

MissMoogle, do you have the book Big Girl Knits? I'm pretty sure there's a poncho pattern in there.

1forAll74 · 07/01/2020 03:01

I am 70 plus.and love hoodies, but never with any brand name or slogan on them. Also.most of my coats have hoods on. (Oldies get cold)

NearlyGranny · 07/01/2020 05:52

More than twice your age and wear one! Not all the time, but for long winter walks and long-haul flights you can't beat a capacious hoodie with kangaroo pockets. 😊

maddiemookins16mum · 07/01/2020 06:57

Yikes, I wear a grey hoodie every Friday with jeans.
I’m 56 this year.
No fucks given.

countrygirl99 · 07/01/2020 06:58

I'm 60. I will, probably be buried in a hoody

Fireandflames666 · 07/01/2020 07:37

Lol no. I still love and wear hoodies and I'm nearly 34.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 07/01/2020 07:41

I wouldn't have worn a camo hoody ever, but hoodies generally YABU. DH is 36 and his 'uniform' is jeans, T shirt (long sleeved if cold) and a hoody, he has a drawer full.

JaceLancs · 07/01/2020 07:42

Stopped wearing slogan - obvious branding or anything with a large motif on in my 30s
In my 40s rejected patterns
Now in my 50s and will only wear natural fibres, plain things, occasional stripe or check
Boring I’m afraid
On the other hand I’m known for “out there” shoes and a lot of jewellery!

Vulpine · 07/01/2020 07:47

Also its not a phrase used to describe men, which would imply it was first coined by some misogynist old beardy back in yesteryear

MelroseHigginbottom · 07/01/2020 07:55

I'm 31 and I wear them. I don't really intend to stop, sometimes you need a big baggy hoody to wrap up in and nothing else fits the bill Grin

CandiceSucksCandy · 07/01/2020 07:56

I'm 40 and my hoody has deadpool on the front of it

Glitterblue · 07/01/2020 07:56

I still wear them at 43 but just plain ones

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 07/01/2020 08:20

48 this year and I have a bigger collection of hoodies than my teenage DS.

Not one fuck is given, flying or otherwise!

MissMoogle · 07/01/2020 08:21

@steff13 I will hunt that book down and have a look, thanks for the heads up on that! Smile

Tattooedmama · 07/01/2020 08:26

I wear hoodies at home, or for popping to tesco and im 30
I used to love trainers, now i have 1 pair of sketchers.
I tend to now wear alot of jumpers and jeans with boots or dress, tights and boots with a cardigan and only go for hoodies on a cant be arsed day

motherheroic · 07/01/2020 10:11

I know what you mean. There are some items of clothes that I put on and think 'time to move on' and I'm only 26 so it's not necessarily an age thing.

pointythings · 07/01/2020 10:55

I am almost 52 and still wear them. Preferably ones with heavy metal type imagery on - my two current favourites have a dragon and a raven on them. Work me dresses in professional smart casual clothes. Real me dresses like a hippie witch and doesn't give a fuck.
