To stop wearing hoodies because I'm 31?

I'm sure other folk my age are able to rock a hoodie no problems but I went to put on an old favourite this morning - a skate-brand camouflage zip up one - and the words mutton and lamb immediately sprang to mind.

I have a lot of hoodies and think my style is a bit... young (not "on-trend young", just haven't really changed my style that much since I was young myself!)

Went into town after work today to buy 4 naice smarti-sh jumpers to avoid a similar scenario tomorrow morning.

AIBU to ask if you've had similar fallings-out with much trusted and loved staples of your wardrobe?!

Yup I'm rocking double G's and think I look fine in a hoody too.

Rachel0Greep · 03/11/2016 10:20

Love my hoodies! Will wear them as long as I like them. I'm a lot more than 31 Grin

Memoires · 03/11/2016 10:20

Dh is 61 and has only just started wearing hoodies!

BathshebaDarkstone · 03/11/2016 10:32

I'm 49 and wear what I want.

60sname · 03/11/2016 10:43

I am 33 and love my hoodies; they are a great antidote to the business dress I have to wear to work. However, they're mostly for round the house/gardening. I don't really wear them into town.

youvegottobekidding · 03/11/2016 11:02

43 & just purchased yet another hoodie from New Look yesterday, so I'm not ready to give them up yet! I love them, they're comfortable & warm, go great with jeggings, jeans, ankle boots, trainers. Great when you don't have to wear a coat. I wouldn't wear one with names on but plains ones yes.

YoungBritishPissArtist · 03/11/2016 12:24

If you like them, why would you stop wearing them?
"Mutton dressed as lamb" is patriarchal bullshit.

GeminiRising · 03/11/2016 12:37

45yo hoodie wearer here too. If you're comfortable with what you wear, who gives a toss what anyone else thinks?

notgivingin789 · 03/11/2016 12:43

Im 22 Grin, I only wear hoodies if I need to dash somewhere quick or can't be bothered to get dressed. I wear it out of convenience.

Though, I love wearing dungarees !

ImSoVeryTired · 03/11/2016 13:10

37 and still wear them. Just got a really good quality second hand one for a pound. Bargain.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/11/2016 13:23

If you're comfortable with what you wear, who gives a toss what anyone else thinks? This.

Chavvy to wear a hoody - better tell the second in line to the throne, then.

I'm 36 and wear hoodies most days. They were made for Autumn. Just cosy and not itchy like jumpers or sweaty like a fleece. Perfect. I couldn't give a damn whether anyone thinks I'm too old for anything though.

nannybeach · 03/11/2016 13:28

Late 60s, bought myself a new one yesterday, no logos, navy/white stripe thick fleecy lining, hav 2 dogs to walk not cold enough for a coat yet.No plunging necklines, and no dresses above the knee, no short shorts either.

Dominithecat · 03/11/2016 13:47

Oh dear a 46 year old hoodie wearer. I have far too many, and I sent loads to a charity shop just last year. With or without a slogan , but must be oversized. Don't much care if I am mutton like.
Rehome your camo one with me Smile

RedElephants · 03/11/2016 14:35

I love my hoodies and my skinny jeans..
Im 50!! I dont give a hoot what others think, 'Im comfortable, that's all that matters imo Grin

Katy07 · 03/11/2016 14:36

In 40s and still wearing - they're warm & cosy in this cold weather. Hood up only if raining or very cold, but because I like to be able to hear properly!

Pettywoman · 03/11/2016 14:38

I'm 42 and give no fucks what people think about what I wear. I will wear a hoodie on occasions.

Niggit · 03/11/2016 14:56

I'm in my 50s and I love my hoodies, and if its cold I'll put the hood up. And I love my skinny jeans. And my slogan t shirts. And I think I look pretty damn good in them. Wear what you want when you want - if people don't like what you're wearing the they don't have to look at you!

Andylion · 03/11/2016 15:40

Hoodies are the cardigans of our generation.

That's sounds almost profound, Fairy.

I bought my first hoodie this year; I am 50. I have avoided them because I knew I would never use the hood. It seemed like excess material to me. But, I was up north, (Ontario) needed a lightweight, long-sleeved t-shirt to protect me from bugs in the evening and the shirt I really liked had a hood. Amazingly the hood helped protect me from bugs, too. I had never thought of that. Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 03/11/2016 15:49

I think they will become more popular, especially cotton ones, as there is increasing evidence that fibre shed from fleece is an environmental pollutant.

pinkie1982 · 03/11/2016 15:53

34 this month and wearing a zip up hoodie as I type... My mum is 54 and wears them x

PNGirl · 03/11/2016 16:09

I totally get it - I recently got rid of an Aeropostale one I got 5 years ago in New York. It was bright turquoise, pink and white tartan with a yellow-lined hood and the brand name stitched down the whole of one arm. Very cool, but didn't look right with anything else I owned. I replaced with a lovely grey marl one from Saltrock, longer in the body with a mint green lining which I feel much more put-together in.

Some things I've gone the other way on - I bought some Docs at the weekend and I haven't worn them since I was early 20s (early 30s now).

Fluffsnuts · 03/11/2016 16:13

I know what you mean OP. And I now have clothes (including hoodies) which are reserved for days at home.
