To stop wearing hoodies because I'm 31?

I'm sure other folk my age are able to rock a hoodie no problems but I went to put on an old favourite this morning - a skate-brand camouflage zip up one - and the words mutton and lamb immediately sprang to mind.

I have a lot of hoodies and think my style is a bit... young (not "on-trend young", just haven't really changed my style that much since I was young myself!)

Went into town after work today to buy 4 naice smarti-sh jumpers to avoid a similar scenario tomorrow morning.

AIBU to ask if you've had similar fallings-out with much trusted and loved staples of your wardrobe?!

Casual clothes don't have an age limit. Today's pensioners grew up wearing jeans, trainers and sweatshirts. Branding might be the problem.

GrinchyMcGrincherson · 03/11/2016 00:44

Jeans, slogan tops from loot crate and vans hoodies here. I'm 35 and far from the only person my age who wears such things.

They can bury me in a hoody for all I care as that's what I love wearing. Always cold, shitty sinuses -my quality of life improved once I accepted hoodies into my wardrobe.

CarolsSecretCookieRecipe · 03/11/2016 02:25

47 and still wearing a hoody.

The only item of clothing I won't wear any more is shorts. My legs are appalling and I don't want to see them uncovered, never mind anyone else.

RazWaz · 03/11/2016 02:52

OH still wears them daily at 53 and he looks fine, so does my Dad (who is 61). As long as you are pairing them with something suitable so it doesn't clash and and don't wear them when you need to "dress up" there is nothing wrong with hoodies.

They are easy to clean, warm, relatively cheep (my latest was £8 on Amazon). Just don't stuff the pockets massively full as it always looks bad!

Lifeisontheup2 · 03/11/2016 05:02

51 and only got into wearing hoodies in the last 5 years. Weird Fish do some lovely cosy ones. I've stopped wearing plunging necklines and short skirts now, uniform for work and jeans/hoodies for days off.
Have now accepted I'm more of a casual dresser.

Bruce02 · 03/11/2016 06:08

I wear hoodies religiously. They are my favourite piece of clothing. Most with slogans on, although it's not brands.

If you don't feel you want to wear then anymore. Don't. But don't stop wearing them because of what others my might think.

My wardrobe has two sides. Work which is all formal wear and non work, which is hoodies, jeans, leggings and the shirts.

Yakitori · 03/11/2016 06:13

I have never really worn casual sports clothing outside wearing it for exercise as it looks chavvy, whether you are 13 or 43.

Mermaid36 · 03/11/2016 06:15

36 here and still wearing hoodies/slogan t shirts etc! However, it's all about appropriateness - I obviously wouldn't go to a posh family meal in one, but I would go out during the day wearing a hoodie etc.

Floisme · 03/11/2016 06:45

I think it's very unreasonable to use a phrase that compares women - young and old - to cuts of meat.

The hoodie sounds fine.

myfriendnigel · 03/11/2016 06:58

My dad wears a hoodie and he is 86...i wear them and I am 36. They are just a warm and practical cover up surely? Like a thicker casual cardie...don't think they have an age to them per se?

Titsalinabumsquash · 03/11/2016 07:02

I realised recently that I'm a 29 year old woman who loves the wardrobe of a 14 yr old geeky boy, I wore a slogan tshirt (usually Harry Potter or other fandom type) with jeans and converse.

I went to Next and brought a few smarter outfits to add in when I have something like a parents meeting at school or a dinner out with family/friends.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 03/11/2016 07:05

35, ex-copper, now law enforcement in another area of business, ride motorcycles for fun, and am rarely seen without a hoody. Love them.

Maybe relegate the old ones in your wardrobe and treat yourself to some nice warm new ones!

BillSykesDog · 03/11/2016 07:18

I don't think the young ones really wear hoodies any more...they're a bit 'Dad'. Or Mum.

Aibohphobia · 03/11/2016 07:21

Wear what you want OP although I only wear them either on an aeroplane or on the way home from the gym where I'll actually use the hood.

As I wouldn't wear them with a hood up most of the time, they may as well just be regular jumpers which are more practical than a hoody with the hood down.

I'm not really a veggie / political t-shirt kind of person though. More of a 'go to NEXT and get 5 cardigans in different shades of beige'.

CheshireDing · 03/11/2016 07:22

God I just turned 40 Confused in the summer. I still wear my hoodies, didn't even cross my mind. I also have some Quicksilver and Billabong stuff (maybe I am too old for this) ? Hmm.

It feels ok to wear and normal though, maybe that's the problem

lovetheway · 03/11/2016 07:22

Just don't wear a wolf fleece....

heron98 · 03/11/2016 07:25

I am 35 and still wear a hoodie I have had since I was 14.

It is my all time favourite thing and although it's getting on a bit it's still going strong!

SemiNormal · 03/11/2016 07:26

I dress for occasion, not my age. There are lots of places I definitely wouldn't wear a hoody (ie a wedding, job interview) but for casual wear no problem (I'm early 30s). I know plenty of people in their 50s and 60s who wear hoodies.

MountainRoute · 03/11/2016 07:28

I'm 31 and only wear hoodies for hiking/outdoor sports/gardening. I think they look a bit scruffy. Not necessarily too 'young' but not something I'd wear to meet friends/go to baby groups/go to town. I prefer nice fitted jumpers. Hoodies feel shapeless and baggy. Jumpers are stretchy and compliment jeans better.

I recently went through my wardrobe and got rid of lots of things I wore in my 20s. I do think you 'grow out of' certain styles and trends, particularly after having a baby. I feel too old for brands like Bench and Superdry now! I have fewer clothes but better quality. My clothes now are more practical and I'm bolder with colour and patterns (show less stains!) I also feel more confident if I look fairly smart, I feel people treat me with more respect.

blueturtle6 · 03/11/2016 07:28

39 and have several hoodies, they handy for changable weather.
Carry on wearing them, but not for work maybe?

kiki22 · 03/11/2016 07:29

Return your boring new jumpers and buy a new hoodie? I'm 30 and still have a similar style to my teen years but its evolved with age and fashions. Camo is very in just now so your hoodie wouldn't look out of place. Dont get old before your time!

MrsJayy · 03/11/2016 07:32

My sister is 33 and still young and wears hoodies 31 pfft if you still like them wear them. I wear them still maybe change your style of hoodie but jeez never to old to wear something

TataEs · 03/11/2016 07:32

i have these moments
i too haven't changed my look since my early 20s, am now 31. as a sahm i have no need to look smart and rock jeans, work boots and a hoodie every day. sometimes i think 'oh grow up' and go out and buy some more grown up clothes, wear them once and revert to hoodies...
