To stop wearing hoodies because I'm 31?

I'm sure other folk my age are able to rock a hoodie no problems but I went to put on an old favourite this morning - a skate-brand camouflage zip up one - and the words mutton and lamb immediately sprang to mind.

I have a lot of hoodies and think my style is a bit... young (not "on-trend young", just haven't really changed my style that much since I was young myself!)

Went into town after work today to buy 4 naice smarti-sh jumpers to avoid a similar scenario tomorrow morning.

AIBU to ask if you've had similar fallings-out with much trusted and loved staples of your wardrobe?!

I don't think the young ones really wear hoodies any more...they're a bit 'Dad'. Or Mum

Not going by the assortment of teenage boys I know.

BusterGonad · 03/11/2016 07:37

I don't wear hoodys because I haven't got the shape for them, my boobs are massive and if I wore hoodys my waist would completely disappear, I'd rather wear a firm fitting top or dress with a nice jacket or chunky cardy, but also I would feel a sloppy in a hoody, like I couldn't be bothered to make a effort. The last time I wore one was just over a year ago when I was really ill and I just wanted comfort. With saying that some people can look amazing in casual wear! Grin

FoggyMorn · 03/11/2016 07:38

Comfort over fashion in this house most of the time! Dh and I (mid/late 40's) still love a hoodie but I'd say we're a bit more careful with the cut and the fit of them now - our teens look good in the big slogan, oversize look but there are more refined versions available for the proper grown ups Grin

MrsJayy · 03/11/2016 07:39

My dds still wear hoodies granted oldest is 24 so not a teenager but youngxters still wear them.

MrsJayy · 03/11/2016 07:40

Yes my hoodies are a bit tame but they are comfy.

SoupDragon · 03/11/2016 07:40

I notice that most here seem to wear hoodies on the basis that they are cosy and practical rather than for their looks - I think that is the main difference to how I dress now.

Mittensonastring · 03/11/2016 07:41

I was in to Mod fashion when young so basically skinny jeans and Fred Perry t.shirts, I'm still wearing that kind of stuff, I'm old enough to be your Mum op. I also wear hoodies.

I do think there is some risqué clubbing type clothing that can a look a bit dodgy on us more mature women.

When acid house was the thing and I was going to all night raves I used to wear a see through top and fake fur mini skirt. On reflection it wasn't the best look for any age group but would look decidedly worse on me now. I still have this outfit, it's 30 years old and I keep it as it makes me chuckle.

Fairylea · 03/11/2016 07:41

Hoodies are the cardigans of our generation. They suit anyone of any age, particularly plain ones.

I really think there is nothing more 30 something than someone dressed in a joules-ish print dress with opaque tights and caterpillar type biker boots. But then again what's wrong with appearing to be 30 something anyway? I'm tying myself in knots....! Just wear the hoodies Grin

MrsJayy · 03/11/2016 07:46

Years ago i used to wear chunky cardis with zips you cant get them anymore so now its the hoody

surreygoldfish · 03/11/2016 07:54

Nearly 47 hoody (non slogan) wearer here. It's practical, warm and comfortable. Perfect for the house, walking the dog, school run, beach, sport, skiing. Dresses, jackets, smart cardigans for work, flat boots/ shoes or heels depending on the day.. Posh jeans or similar plus shirts or nice tops for outside of work smart casual. I'd see mutton dressed as lamb as wearing something too short/tight/ill fitting/ slogan/ripped jeans/overly revealing....

Gowgirl · 03/11/2016 07:59

I retired my daisy dukes this summer as they suddenly looked ridiculous, at 28 I had great legs, at 38 I need to cover my bum.....

Dontpanicpyke · 03/11/2016 08:00

I wear my sons old hoodies to walk the dog. Am 51.

Couldn't give a crap.

skyyequake · 03/11/2016 08:22

With regards to PP saying hoodies aren't as in with younger people now, they're not quite as necessary now. I'm 22 and back when I was about 12-18 a hoodie was basically an essential item... Now no one would really notice if you did or didn't have one.

Als the popular style of hoodie has changed. When I was a teen it was all about the skinny fit hoodies to match the skinny jeans Grin now it's more trendy to have an oversized one or an oversized chunky knit jumper.

I predict I'm going to be wearing hoodies for the foreseeable future and I certainly wouldn't blink twice at a a 31 year old wearing one!

Actually that hoodie you described sounds awesome can you send it to me if you don't want it? Grin

ToastDemon · 03/11/2016 08:25

I'm 41 and live in hoodies. DH is 40 and wears them and he also still skateboards.
I've not noticed people treating me disrespectfully as a result either. If anyone did I'd think less of them.

SistersOfPercy · 03/11/2016 08:25

I'm 43. You'll part me from my Metallica hoodie when you pry it from my cold dead body Grin
I also wear Vans hoodies etc. I'm comfortable with what I wear, if others aren't, well, that their issue not mine.

My Mum wears a hoodie to walk the dog too, she's 80.

Mirrorballfrog · 03/11/2016 08:26

I'm 27 and no way am I ever giving up my hoodies or my converse.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/11/2016 08:31

Lets face it, for some of us the hoody is pretty much in the same bracket as the fleece (checks the thread isn't in s&b where that's probably a deletable taboo word) - comfortable and practical with jeans. The plain charcoal I like at the mo is one I bought for DD but had to get her a larger slightly different style as she wanted to wear it over a woolly. I cant wear it at the same time as her, obvs!Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 03/11/2016 08:34

Mrs jayy - I have a chunky hooded zip cardi from fatface, think they often have that sort of thing.

MrsJayy · 03/11/2016 08:37

Ooo do they im never in fatface but I will have a look .

KayTee87 · 03/11/2016 08:56

If you like them then wear them. I'm 29 and today I'm wearing ripped jeans, Nike air max and a hoody Grin

saoirse31 · 03/11/2016 09:03

53.. Nothing wrong with hoodies any age/..

Bluntness100 · 03/11/2016 09:12

I'm a bit undecided on this, on one hand wear what the hell uou please, who cares, on the other, I often see older people wearing them and think they look a bit daft really, some can carry it off, others not so much.

You get some really nice fitted ones though now, especially without hoods or big brand names across the front ( I guess that's not then a hoodie, more a fleece) , which are flattering and quite grown up.

I do wear the traditional type , as i don't want to chuck them out, but mainly for exercise or out in the garden or to keep me warm round the house.

fruityb · 03/11/2016 09:14

I'm 34 and still dress like an early 00s student! I love my hoodies!

Laiste · 03/11/2016 09:31

I think you can go out in just about anything these days, no one seems to care.

Personally i look shite in 'boyish' casual tops (high neck t'shirts, jumpers hoodies ect) as i've got a big boobs. I have to wear something with a lowish neckline and a bit of cling otherwise my 'boob shelf' seems to go on for miles (which is very aging) and i look shapeless and about 2 stone heavier!

Mirrorballfrog · 03/11/2016 09:45

I have huge boobs and rock my hoodies Smile
