To stop wearing hoodies because I'm 31?

I'm sure other folk my age are able to rock a hoodie no problems but I went to put on an old favourite this morning - a skate-brand camouflage zip up one - and the words mutton and lamb immediately sprang to mind.

I have a lot of hoodies and think my style is a bit... young (not "on-trend young", just haven't really changed my style that much since I was young myself!)

Went into town after work today to buy 4 naice smarti-sh jumpers to avoid a similar scenario tomorrow morning.

AIBU to ask if you've had similar fallings-out with much trusted and loved staples of your wardrobe?!

I'm currently wearing my Qwerty jumper with the Cookie Monster dressed as Darth Vedar. Accompanied by a thick hoodied FatFace gillet. Skinny jeans and Sketchers. I couldn't care less about whether I'm oozing the mutton as lamb aura. I like it, I feel good in it, so what.

ShatnersBassoon · 03/11/2016 16:24

YANBU. Hoodies are for children and youths, I'd feel ridiculous in one. They're a pain for wearing under a coat too.

Mirrorballfrog · 03/11/2016 18:23

You don't need a coat if wearing a hoodie Confused

ShatnersBassoon · 03/11/2016 18:49

I couldn't wear just a sweatshirt as a coat. I'm old and nesh.

Unless I've got confused about what a hoodie is. It's a sweatshirt with a hood attached isn't it? Not a coat with a hood on?

Hotfootit · 03/11/2016 19:00

I'm 43 and still in a hoodie!

Whathaveilost · 03/11/2016 19:48

I never thought of them as an age related garment.
I have loads for different occasions. Thin jumper ones which I wear layer when im on the mountains - I actually use the hood when it windy.

Hoodys as casual wear for work,
Different hoodys for when I'm ice skating and so on.

I have dozens by all sorts of brands such as The North Face, Animal, Vans etc.

Love them and I'm 51.

LittleWingSoul · 03/11/2016 21:13

I replaced with a lovely grey marl one from Saltrock, longer in the body with a mint green lining which I feel much more put-together in.

This sounds lovely!

FWIW, I don't generally care what others think of the way I look, that's not what the OP wad about - I have brightly coloured hair feathers, piercings and tattoos so have never considered myself particularly mainstream in my dress sense (although piercings and tattoos seem to have become just that, recently!)

And I apologise if my OP read as though I was suggesting there was an age limit for hoodies, the overwhelming response from this thread has proved that there isn't!

My actual question was regarding any item of clothing you once loved and wore to death which suddenly stopped working for you

Also, I was being self-deprecating in calling myself mutton dressed as lamb so not sure how a pp saw it as me being vain... it's a turn of phrase I didn't know had 'patriarchal' overtones either (still not sure how it does really) and I was definitely not aiming it towards anybody but myself and certainly not towards the proud 31+ hoodie wearing community! Wear them with pride!

I work for a company who's biggest selling items are hoodies and I'd think nothing of someone in their 30s, 40s, 50s etc coming in and buying a hoodie for themselves! they're cosy, easy to throw on before you leave the house and suitable all year round! I'm buying my DM a hoodie for xmas because that's what she's asked for! you do you OP, it really doesn't matter what other people think of you!

ALLthedinosaurs · 03/11/2016 22:19

Wear what makes you feel comfortable. I wear a hoodie every single day to work (my smart coat looks bloody ridiculous with scrubs and trainers tbh) and also its my go to CBA outfit. Hoodie, tshirt, jeans. It suits me. Being shaped like a boy probably helps.

I don't think I'm muttonous yet. I'm 31

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 03/11/2016 22:20

I'm 41 and will wear one most days. I have a fine collection.

ALLthedinosaurs · 03/11/2016 22:21

Sometimes I wear a hoodie over my pretty clothes too because I have my own "style" 😂

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 03/11/2016 22:23

I saw an old man in skater style shorts, converse trainers and a rip curl hoodie the other day. My initial thought was "he looks daft" then I chastised myself. Go him!

MrsMook · 03/11/2016 22:49

I've still got a student hoodie from 2000 on the go!

When I had DS1, I did a big wardrobe cull. I've been quite consistent in size since my early teens so rarely grow out of clothes. I had reached the stage that a lot of clothes were dated (thinks of the double layer straight skirts from 1999) and had little occasion to be worn again (RIP clubbing days) or just had been too well worn.

I had tried to update my wardrobe to what other 30 somethings wear, but for casual wear, I find myself returning to the comfort of jeans, simple fitted t-shirts and comfy jumpers/ fleeces/ hoodies.

SistersOfPercy · 03/11/2016 22:55

I still wear my band t shirts, I'm comfortable with how I look. I wore a pinafore dress with my anthrax shirt on to work the other day (I work in a school), nobody really gives me a second look.

I've never believed that you should conform to certain styles at certain ages. I wear what I like and I like what I wear.

BeastofCraggyIsland · 03/11/2016 22:57

I'm 34 and practically live in hoodies, I don't wear them at work but probably wear one on the way in most days as I change into scrubs when I get there. I have 4 or 5 really good quality outdoor brand ones that I wear for climbing and hiking, like Patagonia or Rab; and I have this in 3 different colours for everyday wear: www.superdry.com/womens/hoodies/details/64794/orange-label-primary-zip-hoodie-navy plus a few older ones from Hollister and Abercrombie that I've had since I was in my 20s, and a couple of H&M cheapies for housework/gardening/general slobbing around.

I don't really give a toss what anyone thinks about them, I love them and they suit me and my casual sporty/outdoorsy 'style'; I'm not a skirt or dress and cardi kind of person. My Mum has a few too for walking/everyday wear and she's 56, she looks great in them.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 03/11/2016 23:03

46 here. I've just bought myself a new one and I love it. It's so soft and snuggly. It's actually a man's Primark one in burgundy. I was looking for a hoody for him. He's got the navy one. I haven't pointed out we've got matching ones (Harold and Hilda SmileSmile ) and he never notices what I'm wearing.

TheFlyingFauxPas · 03/11/2016 23:04

Sorry. Missing some info! LOOKING FOR ONE FOR DS (13)

Aroundtheworldandback · 03/11/2016 23:05

I'm 49 and wear them to the gym and around he house- not sure I'd wear one to go out

SeasonalVag · 03/11/2016 23:06

I hate them on me. Make me look dumpy and fat (I'm not).
I've never owned one.
I do ponchos!

AndieJC · 04/11/2016 08:41

I have a hoodie for work - with business logo provided by the office, so wear them for work & home. If i were to stop wearing them due to age i'd have to find another job...

PlumsGalore · 04/11/2016 08:59

I am 50, I wear hoodies, lots. Not themed ones with wolves on and things like that, but basic plain coloured ones from H&M or M&S that zip all the way up. I work from home, they are cosy, I can stick my headset and glasses on and my hood up in the depths of winter and crack on!

I wear them for the supermarket too, for yoga, for walking, but never for the pub or at a restaurant.

Floisme · 04/11/2016 09:11

mutton dressed as lamb........it's a turn of phrase I didn't know had 'patriarchal' overtones either (still not sure how it does really)
The phrase refers to the market value of women and compares them to cuts of meat on a butcher's slab.

Olympiathequeen · 04/11/2016 09:22

I think they look pretty awful on anyone over 19.

Torn jeans not over 25

Boyfriend jeans ditto

Pale pink lipstick - 30

Grin
Olympiathequeen · 04/11/2016 09:28

That's so creepy. An ad for quite attractive hoodies has appeared at the top of the page.

DinosaursRoar · 04/11/2016 09:31

I love that Heron98 has left it for us all that at 35 she is still the same dress size as she was at 14... Envy

Anyway, I think it's more there's a point in your 30s that wearing scruffy clothes just looks scruffy, rather than "effortlessly good". Hoodies are perfectly practical clothing, it's just unlikely they (or other v relaxed clothes) will look good if you are out of your 20's /have a less than perfect figure.

I've realised I have to make more effort to look good in casual clothes, bit like make up is now an every day thing...
