To continue to wonder who is happy with where Brexit is heading

Whilst I'm sure Leavers will undoubtedly think AIBU the last thread filled up so here's another 1000 opportunities to discuss what you think about where Brexit is heading.

If it looks as though some EEA deal can be fudged, that would at least square with the Tory manifesto. It might keep the Scots, N Irish and Gibraltarians sweet, or sweet enough, and would suit some Remainers, and those Leavers who voted Yes to stay in the EEC because this would be taking us back more to the situation then. Just got to fudge the immigration - taking international students out might do it, or they might not come in the first instance. I think our research position is damaged now anyway, but most politicians aren't scientists so neither know nor care.

Win, win, just about.

Valentine2 · 27/10/2016 19:42

And do not, I repeat, please do not try to tell me you wanted a soft Brexit after all because you are celebrating without knowing what was offered to Nissan.

Valentine2 · 27/10/2016 19:52

small
"just got to fudge the immigration - taking international students out might do it, or they might not come in the first "

Can you please elaborate a bit? Sorry I am multitasking so may be its obvious but I don't understand?

Valentine2 · 27/10/2016 19:52

And if it means what I think it means, then it's downright lying on behalf of May, isn't it?

Valentine2 · 27/10/2016 19:59

As for your point about research being compromised already: I agree with that a lot. At least 5-7 that I know from EU, they wouldn't work in academia here anymore as the society doesn't look inclusive enough to them anymore. Academics work for peanuts anyway specially younger ones. It's a lot to do with principles and honour and such useless words for them. Hmm

Dapplegrey1 · 27/10/2016 20:00

"But it shows the paucity of your arguments when you have to resort to ad hominem attacks."

Smallfox you have posted ad hominem attacks on anyone who dares disagree with you. I think your spiteful and sarcastic comments probably do put people off posting.

Peregrina · 27/10/2016 20:00

TM has decided that she needs to cut immigration down. If overseas students, are no longer counted, that takes the figures down. If students who have finished their courses but need to do post qualification training could be taken out of the figures too, then that would reduce the numbers. Or simply, EU and other students might decide that the UK is not open for business judging by how students have been treated rather than what TM says, and may apply elsewhere.

smallfox2002 · 27/10/2016 20:00

If you remove students from net migration figures as they are not permanent residents the figures will fall.

Valentine2 · 27/10/2016 20:07

But small, she COULD HAVE DONE that before?!! I was thinking you would write this. I understood it right then. But FFS, why didn't they do it to keep the public pacified?? why are we so easy to be manipulated? And we are supposed to be one of the most developed country on this earth. Sad

smallfox2002 · 27/10/2016 20:11

Because before she was really focused on non EU immigrants.

People don't discuss things with me?

Try to pick on someone who actually would be intimidated by your shtick, I'm certainly not.

Also the Nissan deal is good news the question being rightly asked by more than me is at what cost.

The growth figures are OK, but down on what was forecast without brexit.

All discussed. Or do you want everyone to say it's wonderful.

It's not.

IamWendy · 27/10/2016 20:35

I once got onto an eu referendum thread before smallfox appeared! I couldn't enjoy it though, it felt like I was playing truant and the head teacher was about to find me Grin

MagikarpetRide · 27/10/2016 20:36

Well as I've mentioned the growth thing I'm guessing I'm not a prolific poster and neither can it be small or bear or too many other names to mention

smallfox2002 · 27/10/2016 20:39

Oh don't worry it's me. It's what happens when they can't hold their argument up.

albertcampionscat · 27/10/2016 20:39

The EU has rules about state aid. They were brought in to stop governments giving sweetheart deals to favorite companies/propping up uncompetitive industries. They aren't perfect, nothing is, but this Nissan farce illustrates perfectly why they're needed. Lose them and what's to stop a panicky Government from shovelling money at private companies with no thought for fairness or the long term.

smallfox2002 · 27/10/2016 20:43

Nissan have said no guarantee of aid was given. That's a good hint that soft brexit will be the route.

GraceGrape · 27/10/2016 21:10

Gardengeek There were several posts about growth this quarter. I made one of them myself. People posted from both points of view.

surferjet · 27/10/2016 21:29

Smallfox does put people off posting, so much anger & spite in his/her posts - just so unnecessary, & he/she is on these threads day & night almost, so it's not like you can sneak on when she's not here, she's always here.

paintingisfun · 27/10/2016 21:43

I am not put off by anybody's posting style, some people are just more prolific than others. I think I have only contributed a couple of times to the last two threads but I have thoroughly enjoyed spending a couple of hours a day reading and trying to digest as much of the information as possible.

I don't understand a lot of the economics so don't really contribute but am very worried (ardent remainer) and so am trying to read and learn.

I did think that the news re Nissan was good but immediately suspicious as to what they were offered as let's face it May couldn't have let them announce they were moving as that would have been disastrous politically.

MagikarpetRide · 27/10/2016 21:44

My eyes are about to bleed from reading the sheer hypocrisy on here Hmm

With regards to Nissan I do wonder what the assurances TM has given. Especially as we keep being told we don't know what the future holds and isn't solely in our hands.

Bearbehind · 27/10/2016 21:47

surfer why are you and others moaning about how often people post.

People post as often as the see fit, there's no law against that.

There are loads of other 'prolific' posters in other sections of MN.

It really pisses me off that you and others are trying to stifle the discussion yet again.

Are you going to join in the discussion and tell us why you are happy Nissan are staying? It's not likely to be compatible with the hard Brexit crack down on immigration you are hoping for?

OP posts:
Valentine2 · 27/10/2016 21:49

Is there a chance anyone on here has some figures about the ratio of students in the data regarding immigration? I want to understand what kind of soft brexit we could be talking about.
