MIL does. I don't.

Please discuss.

My mum is obsessed with hot plates, if we eat out and the plates aren't hot she goes on and on and on about it. At her house the plates are so hot you can't touch them and food sizzles. When she eats here she starts heating my plates.

I just eat really quickly, stops the food from going cold.

gleam · 23/10/2016 19:53

Mil liked to warm the plates, we don't bother.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 23/10/2016 19:56

Our plate cupboard is on an outside wall, and I keep the heating fairly low, so our plates are very cold and definitely need warming except in summer, it might be different if your kitchen is warmer.

Oysterbabe · 23/10/2016 20:00

I only heat plates if cooking for MIL as she would be outraged.
I actually don't mind cold food anyway. Maybe I've just become used to it due to baby.

green18 · 23/10/2016 20:11

Always do unless it's a cold meal obviously. Keeps the food warm.

Oysterbabe · 23/10/2016 20:12

The other thing is I am a fan of a side salad on the plate with most things so don't want the plate warm.

green18 · 23/10/2016 20:14

If I'm using the oven I put the plates in for 5 mins after I turn the oven off. Or if I've used saucepans, I use a plate a s a lid to keep contents warm and heating plate at the same time and put one plate under the saucepan after heat id off. There is no faff at all. It's comforting to have a warm plate rather than a stone cold one.

captainfarrell · 23/10/2016 20:15

Side salad with toad in the hole, or a roast dinner??

Theoretician · 23/10/2016 20:25

On a related note, an Australian friend was unimpressed that British pubs don't chill the glasses before filling them with lager.

PetalMettle · 23/10/2016 20:27

My parents do. It's better but I also cba

captainfarrell · 23/10/2016 20:33

Theo that make sense in tropical climates but not in chilly Britain.

Doilooklikeatourist · 23/10/2016 20:35

I always warm the plates
I maybe a bit old and can't be changed but I like my plates hot

nosyupnorth · 23/10/2016 20:43

are all of you plate warmers storing your plates in the freezer between use or something? How are they getting to be so cold?????

I get my plates out of the cupboard at normal room temperature and that's how I use them.

LaContessaDiPlumpOnSea · 23/10/2016 20:47

Theoretician I would LOVE to see the look on the face of your average British publican if asked to chill the pint glasses prior to serving Grin

I was in a bar in Spain and had sherry in a chilled glass and it was lovely 😊
Now , the Spanish brandy in a warmed glass was superb ❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️❤️️

TallulahBetty · 23/10/2016 20:48

Never thought it made much difference until I was given a plate warmer last Xmas ( Hmm Confused ) and now I am CONVERTED.

Tubbyinthehottub · 23/10/2016 20:51

It's a generational thing. I don't warm plates but my mum puts them in the microwave. I don't really like a warm plate, not sure why but it makes me feel a bit sick.

Justwanttoweeinpeace · 23/10/2016 20:51

Don't bother, food doesn't hang around long enough in this house.

venusinscorpio · 23/10/2016 20:52

I love a chilled glass.

emotionsecho · 23/10/2016 20:57

I don't want hot food served on cold or room temperature plates, I like it on a warm/hot plate thanks. It's not some herculean task to warm plates especially if the oven is already on.

lapsedorienteerer · 23/10/2016 20:59

Life is too short to warm a plate...........

LadySpratt · 23/10/2016 21:00

Definitely warm the plates up. If I remember in good time they go in the warming drawer. If I forget they go in the oven when the timer's gone ping and I lay the last bits of the table.

Someone did mention salad.
Answer: use a different plate for salad.

SpookyPotato · 23/10/2016 21:02

I had no idea this was a thing! Another thing I don't do Grin We usually eat it straight away so it stays hot though.

liz70 · 23/10/2016 21:05

I prefer to. Either the plates go in the microwave with whatever food is cooking in there, usually veg, or I pour a bit of boiling water from the kettle on them.

KatharinaRosalie · 23/10/2016 21:09

Do you plate warmers also plate things for everybody? Because I can understand things getting cold if you're dishing out all the portions - we don't though, everybody serves themselves so food does not sit around waiting
