I grew up in a hot country and when we visited here my British rellies never did it. However all of DH's side do.

I am wondering if it is a class thing.

It wouldn't take 2 mins for us, our oven takes ages to her up.

RiverTam · 23/10/2016 18:57

Heat up.

Liiinoo · 23/10/2016 18:59

I have a gadget like a small rectangular folding electric blanket, you sit the plates between the folds and they heat up beautifully. From Lakeland of course.

I really only bother if we have a lot of people over for a roast as dishing up can take so long. If it's just 3/4 of us heating plates is too much faff. I also have an ancient hostess trolley my mum gave me. When there is a big crowd to cook for it is a godsend. Pity it's so fugly.

RiverTam · 23/10/2016 19:01

My mum has one if those! It sits in her 1970s trolley in the dining room.

Yes Navy, getting the plates and beers/wine out for the 'stay at home' person is their job but for some reason mine becomes a bit more Hmm I will however send dp a text the next time I'm out fetching our takeaway. Mind you, some of his takeaway trips have been via the pub, hence the text and probably why I feel a bit Hmm with the request. I don't begrudge the pub outings but some have gone on longer than my stomach thinks should be allowed.

I am being petty, I know this.

LaContessaDiPlumpOnSea · 23/10/2016 19:03

I should clarify that they are classier than me!!

I don't heat the kids'

Our kitchen is freezing, though, in winter and they turn everything cold immediately, if I don't. It's no biggie. I just shove them in the oven for a minute when I take everything else out.

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 23/10/2016 19:05

I heat them in winter. Because we don't use the heating much so they're essentially ice blocks otherwise Grin

Don't bother otherwise.

emotionsecho · 23/10/2016 19:06

No, it's not a class thing whatever that means.

hotdiggedy · 23/10/2016 19:07

I would if I could ever remember/be bothered.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/10/2016 19:09

I do if we're not (as we often do) having a salad as a side. Cold salad on a warm plate is many kinds of wrong...

AllTheShoes · 23/10/2016 19:10

Depends on the room and the food. Freezing plates and a dish that takes a while to serve all the bits of are a bad combination. But generally not, it's only when it's cold in the kitchen and that type of food.

ZanyMobster · 23/10/2016 19:11

Our kitchen is really cold so we have to in the winter, they are absolutely ice cold otherwise. We only take the chill off, never burning hot.

I used to think it was really weird when my nan did it but now I totally get it.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 23/10/2016 19:13

I do heat up at special events with a lot more people round the table, Easter, Christmas etc.

Every day when it's 'tea's on the take, hurry up',cold plates.

acornsandnuts · 23/10/2016 19:13

I don't like piping hot food you can't taste it. Dhs family eat bouncing hot food on bouncing hot plates and spend the whole meal making whoo whoo whoo sounds with their mouths open as it's too hot.

Pleasemrstweedie · 23/10/2016 19:13

Always and have complained in restaurants about cold plates.

We do it in winter as our kitchen is freezing and the food is cold before it reaches the table if we dont. We give them a quick zap in the microwave or put them in the bottom of the oven for a bit if we are using the oven for the food. My parents only ever warm plates when they are having fish and chips and the stay Andy home persons job is to put the plates in the sink full of hot water and get out the tomato sauce and vinegar.

trinitybleu · 23/10/2016 19:17

I don't but the plate cupboard is next to the oven so they get a bit warmore anyway.

I'd be very worried if I could hear my plates. Waaay too much cooking sherry.

If I could hear them though I hope they'd be saying they were nice and warmSmile

DramaAlpaca · 23/10/2016 19:19

I always warm plates. I can't stand eating hot food off a cold plate.
