MIL does. I don't.

Please discuss.

Yes for takeaways
Yes when we have company
Yes for roasts

Never otherwise.

AmeliaJack · 23/10/2016 19:22

I don't but mostly because I associate plate heating with unbelievable amounts of faffing.

I live in a warm house. Plate heating is going to make very little difference.

I can see that it matters in restaurants where there is a distance from the kitchen or in cold houses though.

TroysMammy · 23/10/2016 19:23

Depends if I think about it but then only if the oven is on.

Marynary · 23/10/2016 19:23

My dad always heats his plate but I didn't realise other people did it. I just thought he was being weird and always declined to have my plate heated even as a child. I would hate to eat boiling hot food! DH has never suggested heating plates either.

Blu · 23/10/2016 19:23

We do.
But it matters more with some dinners than others.

Do FILs ever heat plates or cook, at all?

MsJamieFraser · 23/10/2016 19:26

It's a freeking talk forum, if you don't think we are going to discuss the topic we have opened, then why post!!!

Honestly saying "discuss" is just bloody rude and idiotic!

AppleJac · 23/10/2016 19:30

Its a very old fashioned thing to do.

I ve never known anyone under the age of 75 do it

Marynary · 23/10/2016 19:35

I ve never known anyone under the age of 75 do it

That must be why my dad does it (over 75) but not my mother (under 75), siblings or DH! I can understand why people did it in the past as houses were probably v. cold but nowadays many people have central heating so surely food doesn't cool that fast, even in winter.

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 23/10/2016 19:36

I didn't even realise it was a "thing" until I saw people pulling their faces about cold plates on Come Dine with me.

YANBU.

LaContessaDiPlumpOnSea · 23/10/2016 19:36

I used the word 'Discuss' rather than set out a mission statement and explanation of my feelings to date, as I often see done. Apologies if this offends.

I asked the question because MIL told me not to lay the table until she'd warmed the plates and I was hanging around waiting for what I saw as a ridiculous waste of time to occur Grin

idontlikealdi · 23/10/2016 19:37

I do in the winter because our plate cupboard is on an external wall and the plates are icy cold. Can't be bothered the rest of the time.

T0ddlerSlave · 23/10/2016 19:38

We do it if we have friends round especially if we're serving something like pasta. Not so bothered for something like a roast when you pour boiling hot gravy over everything anyway.

RaingodswithZippos · 23/10/2016 19:39

My mum and nan do. I don't buy probably should because I eat slowly.

RaingodswithZippos · 23/10/2016 19:39

*but not buy

cardibach · 23/10/2016 19:39

I don't see why he point. Houses aren't so cold as they used to be, so it's not necessary. My dad (95) is obsessed with hot plates. Last time I called in at his tea time he wa having quiche and chips. When he viinegared his chips it boiled and vapourised.

PickledCauliflower · 23/10/2016 19:40

I heat mine. I like my food piping hot and I'm not a fast eater.
I won't put piping hot soup in a warm bowl, but I find most meals need a warm plate. Especially pasta - it goes cold so quickly.

JustCallMeKate · 23/10/2016 19:41

I've always heated my plate until I got the stone thingys. I can't eat my foot fast and it can take me up to 45 minutes to eat a meal. What a weird thing to say....

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 23/10/2016 19:42

I do, nothing worse than lukewarm food.

Sallystyle · 23/10/2016 19:42

Never, ever.

By the time I have warmed plate 5,6 and 7 up, plate 1, 2 and 3 would be cold again.

Longdistance · 23/10/2016 19:43

Op, yanbu.

I'm with you all the way. My dm never heated plates, but she's not from the Uk.

Fil was horrified when I didn't heat his plate. I said when he cooks for me he can heat my plate for me, until then it's not getting heated.

Flingmoo · 23/10/2016 19:43

I only do it for certain meals, basically things that go cold fast, especially small portions. e.g thin crust pizza, small piles of tortellini, etc.

And yes, takeaways for sure, they are usually not piping hot anymore by the time they arrive so having warm plates stops the food from going stone cold before you finish eating.

KatharinaRosalie · 23/10/2016 19:44

I might, if I kept my plates in the fridge. Or didn't believe in central heating.

As this is not the case, and my plates are kept at a pleasant room temperature, I don't see the need and have never had issues with food getting too cold.

Ohchristmastreeohchristmastree · 23/10/2016 19:44

Never! I like to wolf down food - can't do that if it is too hot!

LaContessaDiPlumpOnSea · 23/10/2016 19:46

I had really never noticed the presence /absence of heated plates in my life until I met DH's family! I eat very fast though, my food probably has no chance to go cold....
