Inappropriate tv at Inlaws

Zippyette · 17/10/2016 21:43

Whilst I was at in laws on Sunday a dead body was on the TV screen whilst my FIL watched beregerac. I said at the time it wasnt appropriate for my 3 yo daughter but FIL just responded by saying 'she doesn't look very well' to his granddaughter. I was fuming so we left soon after.
I've said to my husband that we should say something to his parents before we visit next time such as ' can you make sure you're not watching an adult programme next time we visit?' (Or something similar -ideas?!) But he thinks we should ask them to turn the telly off or over if it happens again as he doesn't want to upset them. I'm saying I'm being proactive as they're still going to get upset and feel he's putting his parents feelings before our need to protect our child. He disagrees.

So now I gave two choices - either phone them up and say something - potentially upsetting them (which I've already done when I turned the telly over to cbbc bedtime when we were visiting over the summer as it was near bedtime and I wanted something calming) or go along with my husband.
What would you do?

Bergerac though was family viewing. I'd argue Zammo's addiction to smack on Grange Hill was far more inappropriate and that was for kids! I've still got the image in my head years later. At least it did its job though, I've never done heroin!

ApocalypseNowt · 18/10/2016 18:41

Juliette Bravo!

All I remember is the walking feet in the title sequence and that my mum's knitting would get a lot faster during the exciting bits Grin

Gottagetmoving · 18/10/2016 18:46

What kind of grandparents are they that they won't turn over to your daughter's favourite channels? My dad hates cartoons with a passion but when his gc are over you bet your bum they'll be on all day. GP are supposed to dote on their GC

Perhaps other grandparents don't think children should watch cartoons all day and could be playing with something creative....or actually play with them instead of plunking them in front of a tv.
Doting on your gcs doesn't mean letting them have what they might want all the time.

MrsPear · 18/10/2016 18:46

My little one has watched bits of Bergerac with me - he is 4 in a week - and he has been fine but he ran screaming into the kitchen the other day scared by Paw Patrol Confused

Yep, this is why I wouldn't let mil care for dc when i went back to work. It would have been cartoons all day, sweets before dinner, taking them shopping for tat. Nursery gave them a far more balanced day.

Grandparents who have lives of their own? Grandparents who realise that kids are kids and shouldn't be pandered to? My mum and dad certainly wouldn't be changing their viewing habits if the kids are there for a visit, they never have done. They wore their granddad down into letting them watch Doctor Who though a couple of years ago.

Wow some posters are being very nasty. OP I had the same thing but with tv and bad language. I took ds out of the room and told in laws we'd return after the show was over. My in laws were obviously ticked off with me but them's the breaks.

Bergerac - cosy detective show with pretty scenery

And dead bodies.... Grin

BantyCustards · 18/10/2016 19:11

When you say 'dead body' I'm guessing you mean 'actor who doesn't even look remotely past an hour deceased lying with his eyes shut'? YABU

Now if you were to say 'dead body that had just seconds before been brutally slain in a hideously grotesque fashion and is now prostate, eyes bulging. Languishing in his own blood and entrails' I would say you have a point.

Olddear · 18/10/2016 19:14

was she sitting quietly watching Bergerac, y'know actually following the story.....? Cos most 3year olds I know wouldn't have been in the least bit interested.....

Dontpanicpyke · 18/10/2016 19:15

Now look very old bag here but I remember being traumatised by 'bleep and booster' and I think it was in Blue Peter? In my defence I was 2!

"YANBU.
I hate TV. I think it's dehumanising. But I realise I'm in a minority.
30 years ago I think you'd have got a v different response to your question. We've become desensitised. Drama Murder is everywhere."

Hum..30 years ago. Isn't that when I Claudius was being watched by millions weekly and getting BAFTA awards?

But Bergerac....seriously.

Personally I think X-Factor is more dehumanising. But I realise I'm in a minority.

BowieFan · 18/10/2016 19:24

Dontpanicpyke

Yes, I think he died a few years ago now. Him and Ponch from CHiPs were my crushes for a while. Then I became a teenager and moved onto Bruce Willis in Moonlighting and Hugh Laurie in anything. I'd dump DP in a heartbeat if Hugh Laurie knocked on the door. As unlikely as it is to happen, at least DP's prepared in case it does. Grin

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/10/2016 19:27

Couldn't agree more. Those people go through many stages of auditions before making it to the live shows. This means that the painfully bad singers are all put through purely for public humiliation. Horrendous!

But I know that people are entitled to watch what they want (as long as it's legal) and I would never tell anyone to turn it off because I didn't like it.

Dude I watch 'The strain' with my 3yo around. She thinks it's freaking hilarious.

Chill out a bit, your undies might be twisted. Hmm

bruffin · 18/10/2016 19:35

My claim to fame
My upstairs neighbour was the location producer on Bergerac. He used to choose all the lovely houses to use for outside scenes . He used to bring us back duty free for watering his plants when he was on location. Also used to tell us the gossip from set.

Ausernotanumber · 18/10/2016 19:45

I Claudius was brilliant.

So was cadfael.

Footle · 18/10/2016 19:47

Don't follow PP's advice to say that your daughter is frightened - that would frighten her, and make this molehill into a large mountain.
