Inappropriate tv at Inlaws

Whilst I was at in laws on Sunday a dead body was on the TV screen whilst my FIL watched beregerac. I said at the time it wasnt appropriate for my 3 yo daughter but FIL just responded by saying 'she doesn't look very well' to his granddaughter. I was fuming so we left soon after.
I've said to my husband that we should say something to his parents before we visit next time such as ' can you make sure you're not watching an adult programme next time we visit?' (Or something similar -ideas?!) But he thinks we should ask them to turn the telly off or over if it happens again as he doesn't want to upset them. I'm saying I'm being proactive as they're still going to get upset and feel he's putting his parents feelings before our need to protect our child. He disagrees.

So now I gave two choices - either phone them up and say something - potentially upsetting them (which I've already done when I turned the telly over to cbbc bedtime when we were visiting over the summer as it was near bedtime and I wanted something calming) or go along with my husband.
What would you do?

Me MissHooliesCardigan I loved Shoestring, he was so vulnerable.

hellsbellsmelons · 18/10/2016 14:27

This has made my day Grin

CockacidalManiac · 18/10/2016 14:29

It's a slippery slope; it's too easy to move on to mainlining the Rockford Files.

Dontpanicpyke · 18/10/2016 14:31

Loved shoestring! Set in Bristol wasn't it?

The love interest in lovejoy was Lady Jane and she's the housekeeper in Downton Abbey!

Here's an old one anyone remember watching the Liver Birds with their parents?

Dontpanicpyke · 18/10/2016 14:34

Rockford files! My mom favvird the dad in that.

HalfShellHero · 18/10/2016 14:35

Some of the posters are being a little harsh here, even though that example doesn't seem extreme, we had this exact problem once with BIL attempting to stick on much more graphic things in in view of the kids, and he watches very inappropriate things in front of his own DC Sad...

Yokohamajojo · 18/10/2016 14:36

Wow do they only have one room to be in?

Ausernotanumber · 18/10/2016 14:38

I'll just throw Petrocelli in there ...

MissHooliesCardigan · 18/10/2016 14:41

Dontpanic I wasn't allowed to watch The Liver Birds as my DM thought the Scouse accent was 'common' and worried that DB and I might start copying it.
I do have very fond memories of watching Hawaii 5 O on a Sunday evening with my dad. He'd go to the offie and get a lemonade for me and 2 cans of Guinness for him. He limited it to once a week as my DM thought Guinness was 'common'. Can you see a theme emerging here?

Gottagetmoving · 18/10/2016 14:46

Wow do they only have one room to be in?

Why the surprise? Lots of people have one room and a kitchen ( apart from bedrooms)

Dontpanicpyke · 18/10/2016 14:48

Miss Grin my mother was a tad like this too and thought walking along eating food was commen and walking along with arms folded 'looked like a washerwoman' no idea where that came from bless her.

Hawaii 5 0 that was ace!

As a teenager I thought Miami Vice was so so cool.

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/10/2016 14:54

I don't have a lot of sympathy with the OP (or her family for that matter, yes, I think you should turn the TV off when people come to visit, just talk to each other instead), however...

I was once driving the kids out on a day trip and we had Radio One on (which they all loved...), Apparently, Radio One had had a trip out to Ibiza, and practically the whole show featured the DJ telling the audience who had got off with who and where, and where the best sex shows were, etc etc. I'm not quite sure that the kids understood what he was on about, but I turned it off because it made me uncomfortable...

Bergerac is on UKTV Play, by the way....

Aeroflotgirl · 18/10/2016 14:56

Total overreaction imho.

MissHooliesCardigan · 18/10/2016 14:57

HalfShell I don't think anyone's saying that there aren't things that aren't suitable for young children to watch/see but we're talking Bergerac here. It's not like she's sitting watching her uncle playing GTA.

Strongmummy · 18/10/2016 15:00

On the basis you are in their house and it's their TV YABU! Take your child out of the room if you're concerned next time. It really isn't an issue

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 18/10/2016 15:06

Pfft. DD saw a real dead body before she was 3.
"Poorly person?"
"No darling, dead"
"Ooh dear, proper poorly."

Gottagetmoving · 18/10/2016 15:12

Ha ha Disgrace Love that!

Its the living that can be scary,..not the dead

Ironside? Grin

MissHooliesCardigan · 18/10/2016 15:41

I give you Jim 'there's been a Meeerder' Taggart. The only tv detective with a face like a pickled egg.

We need a humour alert I think @mumsnet - one that you can add to the Active Homepage. I've not bothered with this thread to date because it sounded immensely boring, but now I'm ROFLMAO.

I raise you Ironside.

FleurThomas · 18/10/2016 15:56

What kind of grandparents are they that they won't turn over to your daughter's favourite channels? My dad hates cartoons with a passion but when his gc are over you bet your bum they'll be on all day. GP are supposed to dote on their GC.

Dontpanicpyke · 18/10/2016 15:57

He's was hot old Jim, Grin

Back to midsomer murders the best episode with lots of murders was the one with Richard Briars.

I think one was beheaded with a sword, one burned in a caravan and one shot with an arrow Grin and Richard jumped off the church roof.

Dontpanicpyke · 18/10/2016 16:02

ohNo Ironside was taken at 15.32 Grin

Fleur I dote on my grandchild but I wouldn't think it was sensible for every other adult in the room to sit watching cartoons or Ceebeebies all day. Kids actually love lots of 'grown up' TV too.

OhNoNotMyBaby · 18/10/2016 16:04

Dammit Dontpanicpyke! I missed that one. Didn't think anyone else was old enough tbh....

[racks brains for another one...]
